This study presents a mode analysis of 3D turbulent velocity data around a square-section building model to identify the dynamic system for Kármán-type vortex shedding. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was first performed to extract the significant 3D modes. Magnitude-squared coherence was then applied to detect the phase consistency between the modes, which were roughly divided into three groups. Group 1 (modes 1-4) depicted the main vortex shedding on the wake of the building, with mode 2 being controlled by the inflow fluctuation. Group 2 exhibited complex wake vortexes and single-sided vortex phenomena, while Group 3 exhibited more complicated phenomena, including flow separation. Subsequently, a third-order polynomial regression model was used to fit the dynamics system of modes 1, 3, and 4, which revealed average trend of the state trajectory. The two limit cycles of the regression model depicted the two rotation directions of Kármán-type vortex. Furthermore, two characteristic periods were identified from the trajectory generated by the regression model, which indicates fast and slow motions of the wake vortex. This study provides valuable insights into 3D mode morphology and dynamics of Kármán-type vortex shedding that helps to improve design and efficiency of structures in turbulent flow.

The effect of local forcing on the separated flow over a backward-facing step is investigated through hot-wire measurements and flow visualization with multi-smoke wires. The boundary layer upstream of the separation point is laminar and the Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and the step height is 13800. The local forcing is given from a slit located at the step edge and the forcing signal is always defined when the wind tunnel is in operation. In case of single frequency forcing, the streamwise velocity and the reattachment length are measured under forcing with various forcing frequencies. For the range of 0.010〈S $t_{\theta}$〈0.013, the forcing frequency component of the streamwise velocity fluctuation grows exponentially and is saturated at x/h = 0.75 , while its subharmonic component grows following the fundamental and is saturated at x/h = 2.0. However, the saturated value of the subharmonic is much lower than that of the fundamental. It is observed that the vortex formation is inhibited by the forcing at S $t_{\theta}$ = 0.019 . For double frequency forcing, natural instability frequency is adopted as a fundamental frequency and its subharmonic is superposed on it. The fundamental frequency component of the streamwise velocity grows exponentially and is saturated at 0.5 < x/h < 0.75, while its subharmonic component grows following the fundamental and is saturated at x/h= 1.5 . Furthermore, the saturated value of the subharmonic component is much higher than that for the single frequency forcing and is nearly the same or higher than that of the fundamental. It is observed that the subharmonic component does not grow for the narrow range of the initial phase difference. This means that there is a range of the initial phase difference where the vortex parring cannot be enhanced or amplified by double frequency forcing. In addition, this effect of the initial phase difference on the development of the shear layer and the distribution of the reattachment length shows a similar trend. From these observations, it can be inferred that the development of the shear layer and the reattachment length are closely related to the vortex paring.

Recently, the installation of photovoltaic (PV) systems has been increasing due to the worldwide interest in eco-friendly and infinitely abundant solar energy. However, the output power of PV systems is highly influenced by the surrounding environment. For instance, a string of PV systems composed of modules in series may become inoperable under cloudy conditions or when in the shade of a building. In other words, under these conditions, the existing control method of PV systems does not allow the string to be operated in the normal way, because its output voltage is lower than the operating range of the grid connected inverter. In order to overcome this problem, we propose a new control method using a DC-DC voltage regulator which can compensate for the voltage of each string in the PV system. Also, based on the PSIM S/W, we model the DC-DC voltage regulator with constant voltage control & MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) control functions and 3-Phase grid connected inverter with PLL (Phase-Locked Loop) control function. From the simulation results, it is confirmed that the present control method can improve the operating efficiency of PV systems by compensating for the fluctuation of the voltage of the strings caused by the surrounding conditions.
The Korea Emissions Trading Scheme ( K-ETS), which manages roughly 70% of the greenhouse gas emissions in South Korea, was initiated in 2015, after implementation of its 1st basic plan and the 1st allocation plan (2014) for the 1st phase (2015-2017). During the three and a half years since the launch of K-ETS, there have been critical policy change such as adjustment of the institutions involved, development and revision of the 2030 national GHG reduction roadmap, and change in the allocation plans. Moreover, lack of liquidity and fluctuation of carbon prices in the K-ETS market during this period has forced the Korean government to adjust the flexibility mechanism and auction permits of the market stability reserve. To evaluate the policy change in the K-ETS regarding conformance to its objectives, this study defines three objectives (Environmental Effectiveness, Cost Effectiveness and Economic Efficiency) and ten indicators. Evaluation of Environmental Effectiveness of K-ETS suggests that the national GHG reduction roadmap, coverage of GHG emitters and credibility of MRV positively affect GHG mitigation. However, there was a negative policy change implemented in 2017 that weakened the emission cap during the 1st phase. In terms of the Cost Effectiveness, the K-ETS policies related to market management and flexibility mechanism (e.g. banking, borrowing and offsets) were improved to deal with the liquidity shortage and permit price increase, which were caused by policy uncertainty and conservative behavior of firms during 2016-2018. Regarding Economic Efficiency, K-ETS expands benchmark?based allocation and began auction-based allocation; nevertheless, free allocation is being applied to sectors with high carbon leakage risk during the 2nd phase (2018-2020). As a result, it is worth evaluating the K-ETS policies that have been developed with respect to the three main objectives of ETS, considering the trial?and?error approach that has been followed since 2015. This study suggests that K-ETS policy should be modified to strengthen the emission cap, stabilize the market, expand auction-based allocation and build K-ETS specified funds during the 3rd phase (2021-2025).

Temporal and spatial variations in surface water temperature were studied using data from temperature monitoring buoys deployed at 47 stations around Boryeong from 2011-2012 off the west coast of Korea. Temperature fluctuations are predominant at diurnal and semidiurnal periods for all seasons, and their amplitudes are large in spring and summer but small in autumn. The maximum annual change in air temperature takes place on August 2nd and August 22th for water temperature, which means the phase for air temperature precedes water temperature by 20 days. The diurnal period of water temperature fluctuation is predominant around Daecheon and Muchangpo Harbors, with the semidiurnal period around Wonsan Island, and the shallow water constituent period on the estuary around Daecheon River. On the whole, air and water temperatures fluctuate with wind. Spectral analyses of temperature records show significant peaks at the 0.5, 1 and 15 day marks with 7-10 day periods of predominant fluctuations. Cross-correlation analyses for the temperature fluctuation show that the waters around Boryeong can be classified into four areas: a mixed water zone around the southeast side of Wonsan Island, an off-shore area to the west, an off-shore area to the south and a coastal area along the shore from Song Island to Muchangpo Harbor.
Launch vehicles are subject to airborne acoustic loads during atmospheric flight and these effects become pronounced especially in transonic region. As the vibration due to the acoustic loads can cause malfunction of payloads, it is essential to predict and reduce the acoustic loads. In this study, a complete process has been developed for predicting airborne vibro-acoustic environment inside the payload pairing and subsequent noise reduction procedure employing acoustic blankets and Helmholtz resonators. Acoustic loads were predicted by Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis and a semi-empirical model for pressure fluctuation inside turbulent boundary layer. Coupled vibro-acoustic analysis was performed using VA One SEA's Finite Element Statistical Energy Analysis (FE-SEA) hybrid module and ANSYS APDL. The process has been applied to a hammerhead launch vehicle to evaluate the effect of acoustic load reduction and accordingly to verify the effectiveness of the process. The presently developed process enables to obtain quick analysis result with reasonable accuracy and thus is expected to be useful in the initial design phase of a launch vehicle.

In order to understand the fluctuation characteristics of water temperature in August, water temperature, tide level, air temperature and wind data were analyzed using a power spectrum and coherence analysis for a region off the southern coast of Korea. Spectrum analysis showed that the water temperature and tide level in Wando, Goheung, Yeosu, Tongyeong and Masan have peaks over a semi-diurnal period. Coherence showed that water temperature was affected by tide in Wando, Goheung, Yeosu and Tongyeong where tidal range is relatively high. In Masan and Busan, where tidal range is relatively low, however, the tide did not affect water temperature significantly. In particular, wind was the most important factor in relation to water temperature in Masan. Time lags were calculated from phase. In Wando, water temperature decreased 1.5 hrs after a flood tide began. Water temperature decreased 0.3 hrs after a flood tide began in Goheung and Tongyeong. In Masan, water temperature increased 3 hrs after a south wind began. Water temperature in Yeosu was affected by tide, but air temperature, tide and wind in Busan affected water temperature very little.
Efficient numerical method is developed for the prediction of aerodynamic noise generation and propagation in low Mach number flows such as aeolian tone noise. The proposed numerical method is based on acoustic/viscous splitting techniques of which acoustic solvers use simplified linearised Euler equations, full linearised Euler equations and nonlinear perturbation equations as acoustic governing equations. All of acoustic equations are forced with immersed surface dipole model which is developed for the efficient computation of aerodynamic noise generation and propagation in low Mach number flows in which dipole source, originating from unsteady pressure fluctuation on a solid surface, is known to be more efficient than quadrupole sources. Multi-scale overset grid technique is also utilized to resolve the complex geometries. Initially, aeolian tone from single cylinder is considered to examine the effects that the immersed surface dipole models combined with the different acoustic governing equations have on the overall accuracy of the method. Then, the current numerical method is applied to the simulation of the aeolian tones from twin cylinders aligned perpendicularly to the mean flow and separated 3 diameters between their centers. In this configuration, symmetric vortices are shed from twin cylinders, which leads to the anti-phase of the lift dipoles and the in-phase of the drag dipoles. Due to these phase differences, the directivity of the fluctuating pressure from the lift dipoles shows the comparable magnitude with that from the drag dipoles at 10 diameters apart from the origin. However, the directivity at 100 diameters shows that the lift-dipole originated noise has larger magnitude than, but still comparable to, that of the drag-dipole one. Comparison of the numerical results with and without mean flow effects on the acoustic wave emphasizes the effects of the sheared background flows around the cylinders on the propagating acoustic waves, which is not generally considered by the classic acoustic analogy methods. Through the comparison of the results using the immersed surface dipole models with those using point sources, it is demonstrated that the current methods can allow for the complex interactions between the acoustic wave and the solid wall and the effects of the mean flow on the acoustic waves.
Mitotic centromere-associated kinesin (MCAK), which is a novel kinesin with a central motor domain, is believed to playa role in mitotic segregation of chromosome during the M phase of the cell cycle. In the present study, it is shown that a rabbit polyclonal antibody has been produced using the N-terminal region (187 aa) of human MCAK expressed in E. coli as the antigen. To express the N-terminal region in E. coli, the MCAK cDNA fragment encoding N-terminal 187 aa was obtained by PCR and was then inserted into the pET 3d expression vector. Molecular mass of the N-terminal region overexpressed in the presence of IPTG was 23.2 kDa on SDS-PAGE, and the protein was insoluble and mainly localized in the inclusion body that could be easily purified from the other cellular proteins. The N-terminal region was purified by electro-elution from the gel after the inclusion body was resolved on the SDS-PAGE. The antiserum obtained after tertiary immunization with the purified protein specifically recognized HsMCAK when subjected to Western blot analysis, and showed a fluctuation of the protein level during the cell cycle of human Jurkat T cells. Synchronization of the cell-cycle progression required for recovery of cells at a specific stage of the cell cycle was performed by either hydroxyurea or nocadazole, and subsequent release from each blocking at 2, 4, and 7 h. Northern and Western analyses revealed that both mRNA and protein of HsMCAK reached a maximum level in the S phase and declined to a basal level in the G1 phase. These results indicate that a polyclonal antibody raised against the N-terminal region (187 aa) of HsMCAK, overexpressed in E. coli, specifically detects HsMCAK (81 kDa), and it can analyze the differential expression of HsMCAK protein during the cell cycle.
In this of study, effects of input air velocity(0.05~0.22 m/sec) and molten carbonate salt temperature ($870{\sim}970^{\circ}C$) on flow regime transition have been studied by adopting a drift-flux model of air holdup and a stochastic analysis of differential pressure fluctuations in an air-molten sodium carbonate salt two-phase system(molten salt oxidation process). Air holdup where the flow regime transition begins was determined by air holdup-drift flux plot. The air holdup value which the flow regime transition begins was increased with increasing molten carbonate salt temperature due to the decrease of viscosity and surface tension of molten carbonate salt. To characterize the flow regime transition more quantitatively, differential pressure fluctuation signals have been analyzed by adopting the stochastic method such as phase space portraits and Kolmogorov entropy, The Kolmogorov entropy decreased with an increasing of molten carbonate salt temperature but increased gradually with an increase in an air velocity, however, it exhibited different tendency with the flow regime and the air velocity value which flow regime transition begins was same to the results of drift-flux analysis.
