  • The CHFG(Critical Heat Flux in Cap) test results have been evaluated to quantify the critical powers in hemispherical narrow gaps and Park's correlation has been verified. For verification of the Park's correlation, the critical powers in hemispherical narrow gaps have been measured using water at a pressure of 0.1-0.3 WPa for the hemispherical gap thickness of 1.0mm, and the heated top diameter of 238mm The measured critical powers were compared with Park's and Monde's correlation. As a results, the Park's correlation was most accurate of other correlations, however, estimated the critical powers somewhat larger than measured ones. So, it was suggested that the diameter factor in Park's correlation should be revised.

  • Steroid hormone profiles during luteal phases after in vitro fertilization(IVF) and embryo transfer(ET) have been evaluated in 83 cycles stimulated by pure follicle-stimulating hormone/human menopausal gonadotropin/human chorionic gonadotropin, in which 13 patients became pregnant. Serum estradiol($E_2$) and progesterone($P_4$) levels were determined on days 2, 5, 7 and 9 after laparoscopic follicle aspiration. The follicular $E_2$ peak was slightly higher in pregnancies than in failures. Positive correlations were observed between the follicular $E_2$ peaks and the $P_4$ levels on days 5 and 7 of the luteal phase in pregnancies, but no correlation was found in failures. The $E_2$ and $P_4$ levels on days 5 and 7 of the luteal phase were significantly higher in pregnancies than in failures, but not different on days 2 and 9. Values of the $P_4/E_2$ ratio were similar between the two groups. The luteal phase durations were 12 to 19 days and no correlation was observed between the lengths of luteal phase and the luteal $E_2$ or $P_4$ concentrations. These data suggest that high $P_4$ levels in the mid-luteal phase, which have positive correlations with the follicular $E_2$ peaks, might have a favorable influence on the pregnancy success in human IVF.

  • Energy storage and distribution technologies are emerging as important factors as research on renewable energy continues. Analyzing the thermal flow of phase change material inside a latent heat storage device and to predict the phase change time is an important part for improvement of thermal performance. However, most of the current research is based on the trial-and-error experimental investigation to measure the phase change time. Therefore, in this study, a can-type phase change material container was designed, and the numerical method for analyzing the thermal flow of phase change material was established and validated. The error rate of the phase change time between the numerical and experimental results was within 5%, which proves its reliability. As a result, the phase change finishing times were found to be 78 minutes with inlet fluid temperature of 80℃ during charging process, and 126 minutes with inlet fluid temperature of 9℃ during discharging process.

  • An approach to understand the phase distribution in a multi-phase polycrystalline material is important since it can affect material properties and mechanical behaviors. A proper method is needed to describe the phase distribution. For this purpose, contiguity and probability functions(two-point correlation and lineal-path functions) are investigated for representing the phase distributions of microstructures. The mechanical behaviors are evaluated using the finite element method. The characteristics of probability functions and mechanical reponses of virtual samples are represented. It is confirmed that the topology of phase clustering affects the mechanical behavior of materials and that the strength is reduced as the clustering size increases.

  • A new image encoding and identification scheme is proposed for security verification by using CGH(computer generated hologram), random phase mask, and correlation technique. The encrypted image, which is attached to the security product, is made by multiplying QPH(quadratic phase hologram) using SA(simulated annealing) algorithm with a random phase function. The random phase function plays a role of key when the encrypted image is decrypted. The encrypted image could be optically recovered by 2-f system and automatically verified for personal identification. Simulation results show the proposed method cand be used for the reconstruction and the recognition of the encrypted. Image.

  • As an effective way of response evaluation in structural vibration analysis, the phase vector sum(PVS) method used in shaft torsional vibration analysis is introduced. Basic relation of PVS applicable to structural problem is derived and applied to Diesel engine structures. Concepts of forced phase vector sum (FPVS) and significance level (SL) are proposed to visualize the correlation between excitation orders and vibration modes in the SL map. The maximum responses and SL are compared and reviewed to confirm the validity of the method. It is regarded FPVS is adequate to newly evaluate the structural vibration based on excitation information.

  • Encrypted images obtained through double random phase-encoding (DRPE) occupy considerable storage space. We propose efficient compression schemes to reduce the size of the encrypted data. In the proposed schemes, two state-of-art compression methods of JPEG and JP2K are applied to the quantized encrypted phase images obtained by combining the DRPE algorithm with the virtual photon counting imaging technique. We compute the nonlinear cross-correlation between the registered reference images and the compressed input images to verify the performance of the compression of double random phase-encoded images. We show quantitatively through experiments that considerable compression of the encrypted image data can be achieved while security and authentication factors are completely preserved.

  • Two-step quadrature phase-shifting digital holography based on the calculated intensity of a reference wave is proposed. In the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) architecture, the method only records two quadrature-phase holograms, without reference-wave intensity or object-wave intensity measurement, to perform object recoding and reconstruction. When the reference-wave intensity is calculated from the 2D correlation coefficient (CC) method that we presented, the clear reconstruction image can be obtained by some specific algorithm. Its feasibility and validity were verified by a series of experiments with 2D objects and 3D objects. The presented method will be widely used in real-time or dynamic digital holography applications.

  • The CHFG (Critical Heat Flux in Gap) test results have been evaluated to quantify the critical power in hemispherical narrow gaps and a new correlation has been developed. The CHFG test results have shown that increases in the gap thickness and pressure lead to an increase in critical power. The pressure effect on the critical power was found to be much milder than predictions by CHF correlations of other researches. From the CHFG test results, a new correlation on critical power in the hemispherical gap has been developed using the non-dimensional parameters as follows: $$\frac{qCHF}{{\rho}g^hfg}{\cdot}4\sqrt{\frac{{\rho}_g^2}{g{\sigma}{\Delta}{\rho}}=\frac{0.1042}{1+0.1375({\rho}g/{\rho}l)^{0.21}(D/s)}$$ The developed correlation has been expanded to apply the spherical geometry using the Siemens/KWU's correlation.
