  • A high Tc superconducting with a nominal composition of $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{Y}$ was prepared by the citarte method. The solid precursor produced by the dehydration of the gel at $120^{\circ}C$ for 12h is not in the amorphous state as expected but in a crystalline state. X-ray diffraction peaks of nearly the same angular position as the peaks of high Tc phase were observed in the precursor. After pyrolysis at $400^{\circ}C$ and calcination at $840^{\circ}C$ for 4h, the (001)peak of the high Tc phase was cleary observed. Experimental results suggest that the intermediate phase formed before the formation of the superconducting phase may be the most important factro in determining whether it is easy to form the high Tc phase or not, because the nucleation barriers of the two superconducting phase may be altered by the variation of the crystal structures of those intermediate phase.

  • Fluorescence microscope technique was employed for the characterization of phase separation behavior of a 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan labeled polystyrene (PS) / polybutadiene (PB) blend in dioctyl phthalate under steady shear. It was confirmed that the fluorescence microscope images reflect the real phase morphology by comparing with the images of phase contrast microscope. Comparing the fluorescence intensities from the phase separated domain (PS rich) and continuous phase (PB rich), the composition difference between these two phases were deduced. The observed shear dependence of compositional change is then used to confirm that the phase diagram is indeed shifted under the steady shear.

  • Formation and thermal stability of a quasicrystalline phases in Al-Fe-Mo alloys were investigated by means of melt-spinning process and subsequent heat treatment test. Thermal decomposition and phase transformation process of the as-spun alloys were studied using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The melt-spun Al-Fe-Mo alloys contained an icosahedral quasicrystalline phase with a quasilattice constant of 0.457 nm. Icosahedral phase formed at a composition of $Al_{82.5}Fe_{14}Mo_{3.5}$ as a metastable phase during rapid solidification was transformed into the stable crystalline phases, cubic 1/0 approximant and monoclinic ${\lambda}$-phase, upon heating. A metastable icosahedral and cubic(a = 0.93 nm) phases in as-spun $Al_{65}Fe_{20}Mo_{15}$ alloy were decomposed into two cubic(a = 0.62, 0.31 nm) phases by heat treatment.

  • The adsorption model in reversed phase liquid chromatography has been critically examined. It has been found that use of the Everett type surface activity coefficient for the solute in the stationary phase is not useful to study the retention characteristics of a nonpolar solute. We suggest a modified model. In this model it is assumed that the displaced modifier molecules from the surface monolayer do not transfer into the bulk mobile phase but stick to the nonpolar solute which has displaced them. In addition, we prefer to use an apparent stationary phase activity coefficient of the soluie instead of the Everett type activity coefficient. This modified adsorption model well explains the mobile and stationary phase effects on the solute retention upon variation of mobile phase composition.

  • Two-phase flow near the wellbore in volatile oil reservoirs causes complications in well test analysis. In this study, the flow behavior of volatile oil reservoirs below the bubble-point pressure and the potential of radial composite model for interpretation of two-phase well test in volatile oil reservoirs was investigated. A radial composite model was used for two-phase well test analysis. A new procedure was developed to interpret well test data and estimate the radius of the two-phase region. The changes in fluid composition near the wellbore during drawdown test were found to increase the saturation pressure, which affects the saturation profile during build-up. Well test results showed that the radial composite method is a powerful tool for well test characterization and estimation of reservoir parameters. The proposed procedure was able to estimate the reservoir parameters and radius of the two-phase region with acceptable accuracy.
