  • This study was conducted to evaluate growth performance of weaned pigs using diets based on ideal protein of the Korea swine feeding standard (KFS) and US the nutrient requirements of swine (NRC). A total of 96 weaned (initial body weight of 6.12 ± 1.21 kg) pigs were randomly allocated into 2 dietary groups with 12 pens per diet (4 pigs·pen-1) in a completely randomized design. The dietary treatments were corn and soybean meal-based diets formulated by the KFS and NRC nutrient requirements estimates for weaned pigs. Experimental diets were fed for 6 weeks in 2 phases feeding program based on age: 1) Phase 1 = week 1 to 3 (21 days); 2) Phase 2 = week 4 to 6 (21 days). During Phase 1 and 2, there were no differences (p > 0.05) for the initial and final body weights between the KFS and NRC groups. Additionally, the average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and gain to feed ratio (G : F) during overall experimental period were not different between the groups. In conclusion, weaned pigs fed the diet based on the KFS had a similar body weight and growth performance to those fed the diet based on the NRC. This suggests that the Korea swine feeding standard may be used for the diet formula of weaned pigs in Korea swine production compared with the US nutrient requirements of swine.

  • These experiments were conducted to evaluate the feeding value of rice protein concentrate (RPC) in weaning pigs. In expt. I, a 5-week feeding trial was conducted with 126 pigs (L${\times}$Y${\times}$D; 21 d-old; 5.32${\pm}$0.34 kg). Treatments were spray-dried plasma protein (SDPP; control), soy protein concentrate (SPC) and RPC (phase 1), and dried porcine soluble (DPS; control), SPC and RPC (phase 2). An ileal digestibility trial was also conducted to compare digestibility of amino acids in the tested protein sources. In expt. II, 160 weaning pigs (L${\times}$Y${\times}$D; 21 d-old; 5.65${\pm}$0.35 kg) were used in a 5-week feeding trial to determine the optimal inclusion level of RPC in the diet. Treatments were control (9% SPC), and three levels of RPC instead of SPC in the diets (3, 6 and 9%). During phase 1, pigs fed SDPP showed better (p<0.05) ADG and FCR compared with those fed SPC or RPC, while there was no difference in ADFI among treatments. During phase 2, however, pigs fed DPS showed lower (p<0.05) ADG than those fed SPC or RPC. During the total period, there were no significant differences in ADG, ADFI and FCR among treatments. The apparent ileal digestibilities of his, lys, phe, thr and met were not different among the tested protein sources. The apparent ileal digestibilities of arg, ile, leu and val were lower (p<0.05) in RPC than SDPP. The true ileal digestibilities of arg and leu were lower (p<0.05) in RPC than SDPP and SPC. However, that of met was higher (p<0.05) in RPC than SDPP. In expt. II, there were no significant differences in ADG and FCR when SPC was substituted with RPC up to 9% during the total period. In conclusion, based on our experimental results, RPC would replace SPC in the complex prestarter diet, which is somewhat cheaper than SPC.

  • Purpose: Feeding desaturation is a common problem among preterm infants which can result in prolonged hospital stays, longterm feeding difficulties and growth delay. The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of premature infants with feeding desaturation and to examine the effect of orocutaneous stimulation on oral feeding. Methods: During the first phase of this study, 125 extremely low birth weight infants were reviewed retrospectively. Characteristics between infants with feeding desaturation (n=34) and those without feeding desaturation (n=91) were examined. During the second phase, 29 infants recruited from March, 2009 to May, 2010 were subjected to orocutaneous stimulation. The results of orocutaneous stimulation were compared to a control group (n=81). Results: The first phase of the study revealed that extremely low birth weight infants with feeding desaturation were significantly lower in gestational ages at birth, and had lower 5 minute apgar scores, more gastroesophageal refluxes and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Infants without feeding desaturation reached full enteral feeding significantly earlier and showed shorter duration of hospital stay. At the second phase, infants in the intervention group showed shorter days to achieve initiation of bottle feeding, shorter days in achievement of full bottle feeding, last episodes of feeding desaturation and length of hospital stay compared to the control group of similar characteristics. Conclusion: Orocutaneous stimulation among extremely low birth weight infants results in earlier achievement of full bottle feedings without episodes of feeding desaturation hence shortens the length of hospital stay.

  • A laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate varietal differences in feeding preference of striped rice borer larvae (Chilo suppressalis W.) to the stem pieces of the eight rice varieties. The preference of the larvae for feeding was significantly differed with the varieties, and in some varieties they were changed with the stages of the plants after transplanting. The larvae much more preferred the susceptible variety Rexoro than the resistant variety TKM-6. The varieties Tongil (Suweon 213-1), Yushin, Jinheung and IR-26 showed comparatively lower feeding preference than TKM-6. Some varieties exhibited a rather interesting phenomenon; strong preference in feeding was observed during the vegetative phase for Tetep and Tongil (Suweon 213-1) and during the maturing phase for Suweon 240 and Yushin. When the varieties TKM-6, Tongil and Rexore were given in several combinations, Rexore was strongly preferred by the larvae than others, and Tongil was still comparatively low in feeding preference of the larvae. The non-feeding preference of the larvae were considered to be in coincidence with the resistance of rice varieties to the striped rice borer.

  • This paper presents exact autotransformer-fed AC electric railroad system modeling using constant current mode, and single-phase STATCOM(Static Synchronous Compensator) which has an effect on electric railroad system. An AC electric railroad is rapidly changing single-phase feeding electric power. To avoid voltage fluctuation under single phase loads, electric power should be received from a large source. The system modeling theory is based on the solution of algebraic. The AC electric railroad load model is nonlinear. Therefore this paper is considered nonlinear load using PSCAD/EMTDC. And the proposed modeling method is considered the line self-impedances and mutual-impedances that techniques for the AC electric railroad system modeling analysis, and that single-phase STATCOM can reliably compensate the voltage drop. In the case study, the allowance range of feeding voltage is 22.5∼27.5 kV, AT-fed AC electric railroad system circuit is analyzed by loop equation both normal and extension modes. The simulation objectives are to calculate the catenary and rail voltages with respect to ground, as the train moves along a section of line between two adjacent ATs. The results show that single-phase STATCOM can reduce the voltage drop in the feeding circuit and improve the power quality at AC electric railroad system by compensating the reactive power.

  • Gap fillar antennas are needed for serving the high quality of DMB through the cellular phone by eliminating the shadow regions among buildings or underground. We implement Quadrifilar Helical Antenna using phase difference with PCB feeding lines without coaxial cables and four impedance matching circuits. It is shown that the antenna characteristics is affected by the size and diameter through the simulation process using MicroWave Studio and it is applied for implementing QHA. Experiment results confirm that the performance can be gained as same as the simulation data by using the phase difference with PCB feeding lines without additional impedance matching circuits.

  • In the present study, the locomotor and feeding activities of single red sea bream, Pagrus major were simultaneously investigated to examine the existence of such dual behaviour. Seven red sea bream of 13cm body length on average were placed individually in 35L tanks equipped with an infrared sensor and a newly developed demand-feeding device. Fish were exposed to a light: dark 12: 12h cycle and constant darkness (DD) to study endogenous rhythmicity. Under LD 12: 12 h, the daily pattern of behaviour differed between individual fish; some red sea bream were diurnal and others were nocturnal. Futhermore, some of them displayed an extraordinary flexibility in phasing because they were dark active but light feeding, and vice versa. Under DD, red sea bream showed free-running rhythms for locomotor activity and feeding. These results indicate that the type of phasing of locomotor activity did not necessarily decide the feeding phase; much of this is explained by the fact that red sea bream were demand-fed. Flexibility in phasing and a certain degree of independence between locomotor and feeding activities could be seen as an adaptative response of the highly adaptable circadian rhythms of fish.

  • Several culture systems including batch, two-stage CSTR, semi-fed batch, and two-stage cyclic fed-batch were investigated for the efficient production of the Fab fraction of PDC-E2 specific human monoclonal antibody using high cell density recombinant E. coli. A two-phase batch system and a two-stage continuous system were examined to overcome plasmid instability problems, by separating the growth and the production stages. The cell density and productivity of the two-stage continuous culture was better than that of the two-phase batch fermentation. In the two-stage continuous culture system with DO-stat, the cell growth and the productivity were superior to those of the system without the DO control. Also, almost total plasmid stability was maintained in the two-stage continuous culture system. Modified M9 medium was selected as an optimum feeding medium for the fed-batch process, and the optimum C/N ratio determined to be 2:3. The optimum feeding rate was $0.6g/\ell/hr$ for a constant feeding strategy in semi-fed batch system. When the feeding medium was fed by pulsing, it was observed that more frequent pulsing resulted in improved cell growth. The linear feeding method was the most efficient of the various feeding methods tested. Finally, high cell density culture using a two-stage cyclic fed batch system with pH-stat was tried because the linear feeding method showed limitations in terms of obtaining high cell densities, and a cell density of $54 g/\ell$ was achieved. It was concluded that the two-stage cyclic fed batch system was the most efficient system for high cell density culture of the systems tested. However, productivity improvements were lower than expected due to the extremely high accumulations of acetate, although the low levels of residual glucose were maintained.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different feeding regimen on the growth and nutrients excretion in finishing pigs. A total of 80 pigs (59.91 kg BW) and 6 pigs (85 kg BW) were employed in a growth trial and metabolic trial, respectively. Treatments were grower-grower (GG), grower-early finisher(GE), early finisher-early finisher (EE), and early finisher-late finisher (EL) diet feeding regimens for feeding trial and G, E, L diets for metabolic trial. Through whole experimental period, no significant difference was found in any of the criteria measured. Pigs fed on a GG regimen gained slightly faster than pigs fed on other feeding regimens, with no significant difference. Although there was a trend that pigs fed on a GG or GE regimen showed improved feed/gain over pigs fed on a EE or EL regimen, the difference also was not significant. In the metabolic trial, dry matter and phosphorus digestibility was not affected by diets, however, phosphorus digestibility tended to be decreased as nutrients contents was decreasing in the diets. Crude protein digestibility was significantly influenced by the nutrients contents in th diets. The data suggested that 11.7% crude protein seemed to be low for the 85 kg pigs. Though nutrients excretion was not significantly influenced by dietary treatment except phosphorus, there was a trend that pigs fed diets with low nutrient content excreted less amount of nitrogen and phosphorus than pigs fed diets with high nutrients content. There was a trend that GG or GE feeding regimen gad a favorable effect on carcass grade when only 10 lighter pigs of each treatment were subjected to statistical analysis. However, with 10 heavier pigs, EE and EL feeding regimen showed better carcass grade, though the difference was not significant. In summary, it seemed that producers generally oversupply the expensive nutrients for the finishing pigs. High nutrient diets do not always guarantee high growth rate of pigs. It rather seems that to meet nutrient requirements for the each growth phase is more important in economical pork production.

  • This paper presents exact Autotransformers(ATs)-fed AC electric Railroad system modeling using constant current mode far locomotives. An AC electric railroad system is rapidly changing single-phase load, and at a feeding substation, 3-phase electric power is transferred to paired directional single-phase electric power. As the train moves along a section of line between two adjacent ATs. The proposed AC electric railroad system modeling method considers the line self-impedances and mutual-impedances. The constant current mode model objectives are to calculate the catenary and rail voltages with the loop equation. When there are more than one train in the AC electric railroad system, the principle of superposition applies and the only difference between the system analyses for one train. Finally, this paper shows the general equation of an AC electric railroad system, and that equation has no relation with trains number, trains position, and feeding distance.
