  • This work reports a set of approximate analytical solutions describing the initial transient process of close-contact melting between a rectangular parallelepiped solid and a flat plate on which either constant temperature or constant heat flux is imposed. Not only relative motion of the solid block tangential to the heating plate, but also the density difference between the solid and liquid phase is incorporated in the model. The thin film approximation reduces the force balance between the solid weight and liquid pressure, and the energy balance at the melting front into a simultaneous ordinary differential equation system. The normalized model equations admit compactly expressed analytical solutions which include the already approved two-dimensional solutions as a subset. In particular, the normalized liquid film thickness is independent of all pertinent parameters, thereby facilitating to define the transition period of close-contact melting. A unique behavior of the solid descending velocity due to the density difference is also resolved by the present solution. A new geometric function which alone represents the three-dimensional effect is introduced, and its properties are clarified. One of the representative results is that heat transfer is at least enhanced at the expense of the increase in friction as the cross-sectional shape deviates from the square under the same contact area.

  • A mathematical model has been developed for predicting kinematic, thermal, and solidification histories of atomized droplets during flight. Liquid droplet convective cooling, recalescence, equilibrium-state solidification, and solid-phase cooling were taken into account in the analysis of the solidification process. The spherical shell model was adopted where the heterogeneous nucleation is initiated from the whole surface of a droplet. The growth rate of the solid-liquid interface was determined from the theory of crystal growth kinetics with undercooling caused by the rapid solidification. The solid fraction after recalescence was obtained by using the integral method. The thermal responses of atomized droplets to gas velocity, particle size variation, and degree of undercooling were investigated through the parametric studies. It is possible to evaluate the solid fraction of the droplet according to flight distance and time in terms of a dimensionless parameter derived from the overall energy balance of the system. It is also found that the solid fraction at the end of recalescence is not dependent on the droplet size and nozzle exit velocity but on the degree of subcooling.

  • In this paper, a broadband tunable YIG(Yittrium Iron Garnet) oscillator is designed and fabricated. To design an YTO(YIG Tuned Oscillator), a suitable YIG resonator is selected according to the design oscillation range and its equivalent R, L, C resonant circuit parameters are obtained through the measurement of its resonance characteristic. Using the equivalent circuit, the wideband topology which suppresses the parasitic oscillation is selected and implemented. The designed circuit is simulated by HBT(Harmoic Balance Technique) using EEsof's jOMEGA. The YTO thus fabricated has the wide oscillation range from 1.4 GHz to 4 GHz, and its linearity is 0.5% in the oscillation range. The phase noise is below 105dBc at 100kHz offset.

  • In the 1.1 Mn steel containing boron, effects of the 0.1 V addition and processing condition were studied. In the $550^{\circ}C$ interrupted cooling where the main structure is (ferrite + pearlite), the impact toughness decreased as the tensile strength increased by the 0.1 V addition. The $800^{\circ}C$ rolling including two step rolling of $800-770^{\circ}C$, exhibited better strength-toughness balance, as compared to the $770^{\circ}C$ rolling. This seems to be kind of conditioning effect at higher temperature, e.g., more uniform deformation effect. In the accelerated cooling after the $750^{\circ}C$ rolling in a dual phase range, the impact toughness was enhanced, despite a large increase in tensile strength. This is believed to be related to the change of main structure from (ferrite + pearlite) to (ferrite + bainite).

  • The frequency response characteristics of a condenser were numerically studied for the control of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The important parameters, such as the refrigerant flow rate, refrigerant temperature, air velocity, and air temperature at the condenser inlet, were analyzed. Superheated vapor, two phase, and subcooled liquid domain in condenser can be described by using the energy balance equation and the mass balance equation in refrigerant and tube wall, the basic equation for describing the dynamic characteristics of condenser can be derived. The transfer function for describing dynamic response of the condenser to disturbances can be obtained from using linearizations and Laplace transformations of the equation. From this transfer function, analytical investigation which affects the frequency responses of condenser has been made. Block diagrams were made based on the analytic transfer function; dynamic responses were evaluated in Bode diagrams on the frequency response. Through this study, it became possible that the information about the dynamic characteristics of air-cooled condenser is offered. The results may be used for determining the optimum design parameters in actual components and entire systems. Also, the mathematical models, frequency response may be used to help understanding, evaluate optimum design parameters, design control systems and determine on setting the best controller for the refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.

  • This paper is part of the dissertation for an MSc in Project Management and Innovation of Strathclyde Business School The research aims at understanding how IT-SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in Information Technology Business) implement and use Flexible Work Arrangements and Flexible Working Hours (FWH/FWA) in their organisations. In-depth interview data was collected from managers and business owners of 31 companies whose needs for Work-Life Balance varied. Results show that many factors positively influence IT-SMEs to use FWH/FWA. For example, customers and partners working at different work-hours, traffic congestions between home and office, and the general stereotype of IT personnel. However, the results also found several concerning factors that may hamper the success of FWH/FWA implementation. They include the inadequacy of management skills in tracking, monitoring, and assessing employee's real performance, contextual factors for Thai IT-SMEs, i.e. conflict resolution culture, IT people's protocol of communication exchanges, and shortcoming of technology infrastructure. The findings also show that many companies that had used FWA eventually stopped. Thus, a four-phase cyclical framework called PLIC (Purpose-Limitation-Implementation-Consequence) has been developed as an approach to FWH/FWA implementation.

  • The strain, surface and inerfacial energies of III-V ternary systems were calculated for three kinds of structure modes: the Frank-van der Merwe (FM) mode, the Stranski-Krastanov (SK) mode an the Volmer-Wever (VW) mode. The free energy for each mode was estimated as functions of the thickness and composition or lattice misfit. Through comparison of the free energy of each mode, it was found that the thickness-composition phase diagrams of III-V ternary systems can be determined only by considering the balance of the free energy and three kinds of structure modes appear in the phase diagrams. The SK mode appears only when the lattice misfit is large and/or the lattice layer is thick. The most stable structure of the SK mode is a cluster with four lattice layers or minimum thickness on a wetting layer of increasing lattice layers. The VW mode appears when the lattice misfit is large and the lattice layer is thin and only in the InPSb/InP and GaPSb/GaP systems which have the largest lattice misfit of III-V ternary systems. The stable region of the SK mode in the GaPSb/GaP and InPSb/InP phase diagrams is largest of all because the composition dependence of the strain energy of these systems is stronger than that of the other systems. The critical number of lattice layers below which tow-dimensional (2D) layers precede the three-dimensional (3D) nucleation in the SK mode at x=1.0 depnds on the lattice misfit.

  • Total Pollution Load Control (TPLC) is a system for managing the discharge load assigned by satisfying the Target Water Quality (TWQ) in Standard Flow Conditions (SFC). TWQ for a between Metropolitan Cities/Dos Specified (Cites/Dos TWQ) is very important to be the basis of each Unit Watershed TWQ. The purpose of this study was to establish a rational and scientific 'Calculation Metohd of Cites/Dos TWQ'. A methodology for the 3rd phase 'Cites/Dos TWQ' was proposed in this study based on review of the past phase (1rd and 2rd) 'Cites/Dos TWQ' in nakdong river. And utilized water quality model to estimate 3rd phase 'Cites/Dos TWQ' The allocation method of individual discharge sources are important for estimating 'Cites/Dos TWQ' In this case, the key point of the method of calculating the total allowable individual sources is the balance of the equity and the efficiency between individual sources of reduced pollutants. Thus, water quality shall be determined with regard to the current emission levels, the reduction capacity and the technical possibilities of individual sources. We estimate 3rd phase 'Cites/Dos TWQ' according to the 'Calculation Method of Cites/Dos TWQ'.
