Biodiesel is known as an environmentally friendly neutral fuel, and a policy of obligatory mixing of a certain ratio is implemented on land. In this study, to verify the feasibility of using biodiesel as a ship fuel, component analysis, metal corrosion test, and storage stability test were performed on the mixing ratios of 0 %, 5 %, 10 %, and 20 % of marine diesel and biodiesel. Component analysis evaluated a total of eight factors including density, kinematic viscosity and flash point according to ISO 8217:2017 standards and the reliability of biodiesel through metal corrosion tests and storage stability tests under atmosphere temperature and harsh conditions (60 ℃) for 180 days. Results demonstrate that component analysis satisfied the ISO 8217:2017 standard in all biodiesel mixing ratios. Furthermore, as the biodiesel mixing ratio increased, the kinematic viscosity, density, and acid value increased and the sulfur content decreased. Metal corrosion rarely occurred in the case of carbon steel, iron, aluminum, and nickel, whereas in the case of copper, corrosion occurred under the influence of oxygen-rich biodiesel under the harsh conditions (60 ℃) of 20 % biodiesel mixture. As for storage stability, discoloration, sludge formation, and fuel separation were not visually confirmed.
Since late of 2000, KIER has developed a novel pyrolysis process for production of fuel oils from polymer wastes. It could have been possible due to large-scale funding of the Resource Recycling R&D Center. The target was to develop an uncatalyzed, continuous and automatic process producing oils that can be used as a fuel for small-scale industrial boilers. The process development has proceeded in three stages bench-scale unit, pilot plant and demonstration plant. As a result, the demonstration plant having capacity of 3,000 tons/year has been constructed and is currently under test operation for optimization of operation conditions. The process consisted of four parts ; feeding system, cracking reactor, refining system and others. Raw materials were pretreated via shredding and classifying to remove minerals, water, etc. There were 3 kind of products, oils(80%), gas(15%), carbonic residue(5%). The main products i.e. oils were gasoline and diesel. The calorific value of gas has been found to be about 18,000kcal/$m^3$ which is similar to petroleum gas and shows that it could be used as a process fuel. Key technologies adopted in the process are 1) Recirculation of feed for rapid melting and enhancement of fluidity for automatic control of system, 2) Tubular reactor specially-designed for heavy heat flux and prevention of coking, 3)Recirculation of heavy fraction for prevention of wax formation, and 4) continuous removal & re-reaction of sludge for high yield of main product (oil) and minimization of residue. The advantages of the process are full automation, continuous operation, no requirement of catalyst, minimization of coking and sludge problems, maximizing the product(fuel oil) yield and purity, low initial investment and operation costs and environment- friendly process. In this presentation, background of pyrolysis technology development, the details of KIER pyrolysis process flow, key technologies and the performances of the process will be discussed in detail.
Vehicle occupant exposure to air pollutants has been a subject of concern in recent years because of higher levels of air pollutants inside gasoline or diesel-using vehicle, comparing to the surrounding atmosphere. Contrary to previous studies, fuel of vehicles operated in this study was liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This study examined the potential exposure and removal efficiency of selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) and respirable suspended particle (RSP) by commercial air cleaning device inside vehicle under different ventilation conditions. Vehicle concentrations inside of benzene, toluene, m,p-xylene, $NO_2$ and RSP were lower under the low ventilation condition. This was indicated that outdoor air pollutants could affect the vehicle air quality inside in case metropolitan cities such as Daegu. The urban vehicle concentrations inside of benzene, toluene, m,p-xylene, $NO_2$ and RSP with air cleaning device were higher than those without air cleaning device. This means that the use of air cleaning device equipped with activated carbon filter, which was used in this study, in the interior of vehicles could be expected to reduce the vehicle occupants exposure to air pollutants effectively. In batch type reactor of laboratory scale, removal efficiencies of air cleaning device used were $97.0\%,\;95.7\%,\;94.6\%\;and\;85.5\%$ respectively in benzene, toluene, m,p-xylene and $NO_2$.

This paper is the first of several companion papers which compare the methods of Air-fuel ratio determination. There are many methods which calculate Air-Fuel ratio from exhaust emission. Most of them are based on the simple chemical equations, which use balance of atom, and the error of the calculation is negligible as far as the instrumentation accuracy is guaranteed. They assume homogeneous mixture and complete combustion to the extent of oxygen availability. Because of these simple assumptions, they cannot offer the information about the fuel distribution state and the malfunction of instrument. For these limitations, Eltinge offered new one based on stricter mathematical model. This result coincides with the others very well and gives more information about the mixture state and instrumentation. Consequently this might be a general solution for Air-fuel ratio determination and exhaust composition. The objects of the calculation, however, were not commercial fuels except gasoline and the compensation method of unburned hydrocarbon was not appropriate to recent analyzer. Moreover he did not consider the fuel which contains oxygen, such as methanol, ethanol and blend of gasoline-alcohol. In this paper, Eltinge chart is expanded to the arbitrary fuel composition as the reference exhaust compositions for the purpose of further discussions about Air-fuel ratio determination methods and the charts fur gasoline, diesel, methanol, M85, liquefied petroleum gas(LPG), natural gas(NG), propane, butane are illustrated.
In-situ Air Sparging (IAS, AS) is a remediation technique in which organic contaminants are volatilized from saturated zone to unsaturated layer. This study focuses on the removal and interaction of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and $CO_2$, and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) in saturated and unsaturated, and air space zone on the unsaturated soil surface. Soil sparging temperature of hot air has risen to $34.9{\pm}2.7^{\circ}C$ from $23.0{\pm}1.9^{\circ}C$ for 36 days. At the diffusing point, fluid TPH concentrations were reduced to 78.7% of the initial concentration in saturated zone when hot air was sparged. The TPH concentrations were decreased to 66.1% for room temperature air sparging. The amount of VOCs for hot air sparging system, in air space, was approximately 26% larger than constant air sparging system. The amount of $CO_2$ was 4,555 mg (in unsaturated zone) and 4,419 mg (in air space) when hot air was sparged was 3,015 mg (in unsaturated zone) and 3,634 mg (in air space) for room air temperature in the $CO_2$ amount. The removals of VOCs and biodegradable $CO_2$ through the hot air sparging system (modified SVE) were more effective than the room temperature air sparging. The regression equation were $Y=976.4e^{-0.015{\cdot}X}$, $R^2=0.98$ (hot air sparging) and $Y=1055e^{-0.028{\cdot}X}$, $R^2=0.90$ (room temperaure air sparging). Estimated remediation time was approximately 500 days, if final saturated soil TPH concentration was set to 1.2 mg/L application of tail effect.

A preliminary study for energy efficient soil heating and contaminant removal using microwave was conducted. Soils sampled from floodplain were heated with microwave oven, and soil heating property and energy efficiency were compared to those heated with electrical furnace. In addition the effects of water, soil organic matter, and contaminated diesel on soil heating with microwave were investigated. Even though the electrical power consumption of electrical furnace and microwave oven were similar, temperature of soil heated with microwave oven was significantly higher than that of soil heated with electrical furnace. The increase of soil moisture content delays the raise of soil temperature during heating it with microwave oven. However, the effects of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) (<10%) in contaminated soil matrix and small amount of soil organic matter (<5%) on the increase of soil temperature by microwave were not significant. Further studies for contaminated soils with different texture using pilot scale microwave reactor are required for application of this technique in the field.

Coal liquefaction technology was established in Germany in 1920s. Coal liquefaction refers to the process in which coal is converted into liquid fuels such as gasoline and diesel oil under certain conditions. Coal liquefaction is usually classified into direct coal liquefaction (DCL) and indirect coal liquefaction (ICL). Various technologies for coal liquefaction, conducted between 1970s and 2000s, resulted in the development and optimization of a communication ready technology for the production of petroleum substitutes as refinery feedstocks. The purpose of this paper is to review the research, development and demonstration of coal liquefaction. In these respects, various DCL and ICL processes under development were illustrated and compared. Also, the status and perspective of coal liquefaction projects in the world were viewed. Considering the scale, and technical difficulties of domestic coal liquefaction, the project has be leaded by the government.
There are U.S. troops with a force about 290,000 strong stationed all around the world, approximately 150 countries. Among the troops, USFK has performed principal part with its stationing for 50 years against the military threat of North Korea. However, as a result of an investigation made into environmental contamination of several bases which were restituted from US to ROK by the Land Partnership Plan in the process of relocation of USFK, it was found that the area was contaminated by not only TPH and BTEX caused by diesel fuel and JP-8 but also various heavy metal over the standard level according to the operations of corps. Among these bases, 4 corps, each of which has different duties and function, were chosen to be analyzed for the characteristics and degrees of soil contamination. Fisrt of all, in armored camp the soil was contaminated by TPH and heavy metal (Zn, Ni, Pb) due to the repairing activities of tracked vehicles and shooting exercises. In army aviation camp, the soil was contaminated by TPH, BTEX and heavy metal (Zn, Cd) due to repairing activities of aircrafts. Also, in engineer camp there was contaminated area polluted by TPH and heavy metal (Zn, Pb) caused by open-air storage of various construction materials and TPH, BTEX and heavy metal (Zn, Pb, Cu) contamination of aircraft shooting area in shooting range camp were detected. Managing environment will be more effective when we identify the contaminative characteristics and take necessary measures in advance.
Hot air sparging is a groundwater remediation technique, in which organic contaminants volatilized into hot air from the saturated to vadose zone. In the laboratory diesel (10,000 mg TPH/kg) was spiked in contaminated saturated aquifer soil. The hot air ($34.9{\pm}2.7^{\circ}C$) was injected in intermittent (Q=1,500 mL/min, 10 minute injection and 10 minute idle) modes. We performed microcosm tests using the groundwater samples to assess TPH reductive remediation activity. For Terminal-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of eubacterial communities in sludge of wastewater treatment plants and soil of experiment site, the 16S rDNA was amplified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) from the sludge and the soil. The obtained 16S rDNA fragments were digested with Msp I and separated by electrophoresis gel. We found various sequence types for hot air sparging experiment with sludge soil samples that were closely related to Bacillus (149 bp, Firmicutes), Methlobacterium (149 bp, Euryarchaeotes), Pseudomonas (492 bp, ${\gamma}$-Proteobacteria), etc., in the clone library. In this study we find that TPH-water was reduced to 78.9% of the initial value in this experiment aquifer. The results of the present study suggests that T-RFLP method may be applied as a useful tool for the monitoring in the TPH contaminated soil fate of microorganisms in natural microbial community.

For the remediation of the subsurface contaminated by nonaqueous phase liquids(NAPLs), it is important to characterize the NAPL zone properly. Conventional characterization methods provide data at discrete points. To overcome the weak points of conventional characterization methods, the partitioning tracer method has been developed and studied. The average saturation of NAPL($S_n$), which is the representative and continuous saturation value within contaminated site, can be calculated by comparing the transport of the partitioning tracers to that of the conservative tracer in the partitioning tracer method. In this study, the application of the partitioning tracer method in heterogeneous media was investigated. To represent the heterogeneous condition of subsurface, a two-dimensional soil box was divided into four layers and each layer contained different sized soils. Soils in the soil box were contaminated by the mixture of kerosene and diesel, and partitioning tracer tests were conducted before and after the contamination using methanol as conservative tracer and 4-methyl-2-pentanol, 2-ethyl-1-butanol, and hexanol as partitioning tracers. The response curves of partitioning tracers from contaminated soils were separated and retarded in comparison with those from non-contaminated soils. The contamination of soils by NAPLs, therefore, can be detected by partitioning tracer method considering these retardations of tracers. From our experiment condition, the average saturation of NAPLs calculated by partitioning tracer method using the methanol as conservative tracer and hexanol as partitioning tracer showed the highest accuracy, though all results were underestimated. Further studies, therefore, were needed for improving the accuracy using the partitioning tracer test in heterogeneous media.
