This study is designed to explore the persuasion strategies applied to the student recruitment advertising of the Korean universities. Advertising is a "mirror" of a consumption culture in the sense that an advertising message is composed of the major consumption values (as the persuasive appeals) and the major premises of the consumption culture (as the persuasive premises). Furthermore, the analysis of the persuasive appeals and premises in advertising reveals the ideologies that govern the consumption culture. Thus, this study attempts to explicate the value systems and ideologies of Korean universities in the society by a semiotic decoding of their advertising text. Semiotic approach to "decoding advertising text" allows us to classify advertising signs and sign systems in relation to the way they are transmitted. To achieve this goal, this study investigates three research questions: ① What are the major persuasive appeals appeared in the university advertising? ② What are the persuasive premises underlying those persuasive appeals? ③ What are the ideologies that govern those persuasive appeals and premises in Korean university advertising? The study result reveals 15 major persuasive values and premises along with the four major ideologies governing the symbolism of Korean universities.

In the field of Human-Computer Interaction design, persuasive design has gradually been applied to the system development and design process, especially for mobile application design. However, most mobile applications have hitherto a very short using lifecycle. Especially, design features with long-term persuasive effectiveness remain to be further researched and developed. In this study, we focused on investigating and identifying the durative persuasive design characteristics through a data mining process and evaluating the durative effectiveness through a long-term observation process. Total five hundred healthcare-related mobile applications were selected from Apple iTunes Store and a mixed method was conducted to extract the most common persuasive design characteristics. Based on the results of extraction, a representative healthcare-related mobile application was selected as experimental subject. Total one hundred and twenty participants were observed during a six-months experiment and the monitoring data of app usage of all participants was collected once a week. According to the evaluation model for behavior change identification process, participants with habit formation features were proved to have a significant long-term perception level for ten persuasive design characteristics. Further interview research was performed to investigate the participant's long-term perceptions on those characteristics for the purpose of identifying the durative persuasions. The results indicated that a long-term durative effectiveness can be observed and healthcare-related apps designed with those characteristics could have durative effectiveness. This study may contribute to the improvement of future mobile application designs in user experience and durative persuasion, as well as bringing future benefits for both mobile application developers and users.
This study analyzed the persuasive marketing communication strategy which applied by showhost for TV homeshopping sales. Specifically, the current study focuses on the comparative analysis of tangible goods and intangible goods sales. Four sales homeshopping TV programs were selected for analysis: two overseas travel package products, one climbing clothes product and one produce of walnut. The method of rhetorical content analysis was conducted to analyze the strategy of persuasive communication. The results shows that , , were commonly used for both tangible and intangible products sales. But , , and were heavily utilized only for intangible products sales. The result of this study can contribute to provide theoretical background for future advanced research, although it has a limitation of only analyzing four sales programs.
Purpose: This study was to identify the persuasive effects of exercise promotion advertisements for obesity prevention according to the source types( ordinary people, experts, celebrity endorsers) and advertising message types(slices of life, testimonials). Method: Gender, height, body weight, BMI, attitude toward obesity(Aob) and exercise(Aex), and intention to exercise(Iex) were collected from 626 elementary school students in a pretest. After 2 months, six advertisements type attached to a questionnaire were provided for 20 minutes and then Aob, Aex, lex, source credibility and attitude toward advertisements(Aad) were collected in posttest. Result: 1) In posttest the lex of 6 the groups increased significantly compared with that of the pretest, 2) Source credibility of the Ordinary+Testimonial group was lower than the Celebrity+Testimonial, Celebrity+Slice of life, Ordinary+Slice of life, and Expert+Testimonial groups, Aad of the Celebrity+Testimonial group was higher than the Ordinary+ Testimonial group. 3) The Main effect and interaction effect of source types and advertising message types were significant in source credibility and Aad, Conclusion: Persuasive effects of exercise promotion advertisements in elementary school students was found to be the most effective in Celebrity+Testimonial. This study suggests that selection of health education advertisements according to demographic characteristics is important to promote persuasive effects.
This study is designed to decode the persuasion strategies in the advertising targeted for children from a semiotic perspective. Semiotic approach to "decoding advertising text" allows us to classify advertising signs and sign systems in relation to the way they are transmitted and communicated. In this strategic process of advertising production, the producers use various "expressive techniques" and "persuasive appeals, premises, and ideology" shared by the members of the society. This study investigates Korean print media advertising for children with the following research questions: ① What types of expression techniques are employed in the print media advertising for children? ② What types of persuasive appeals(consumption values) are used in the print media advertising for children? ③ What are the persuasive premises(cultural premises) underlying those persuasive appeals? ④ What is the structure of ideology that governs those persuasive appeals and premises in the advertising for children? The study result reveals seven most frequently employed expressive techniques, ten major types of persuasive appeals and premises, and the structure of ideology governing the signs and signification systems in the advertising targeted for children.
Although periodic health examination has been one of the most common practices of preventive medicine, its effect on modification of risk behavior has been seldom assessed. Thus, this study attempted to demonstrate the influence of a health examination on modification of cardiovascular disease related health risk behaviors such as smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity. Data of 893 adults were derived from two types of a popular and highly acclaimed health examination program. With a conceptual model constructed using Persuasive Communication variables, McNemar tests examined Source-Outcome association, hypothesizing that different health examination programs would yield different levels of behavior change in smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity. No significant behavior change was found in any of the two health examination programs. Instead, previously established Receiver-Outcome relationship was reconfirmed by logistic regression modeling where gender was the most prominent predictor of all three behaviors. Men were more likely to be current smokers (OR=0.029), exercisers (OR=2.629), and obese (OR=0.237). The importance of followups after health examination is highly stressed as well as that of gender-specific health education strategies. This study recommends applying the social-ecological approaches in health examination, which emphasizes the support and collaboration at individual, family, organizations, community, and policy level to improve health. Long term and qualitative evaluation of health examination may provide more foundation for increasing the effectiveness of health education and communication in health examinations.

In this paper, an augmented refrigerator is proposed that presents information to increase the awareness of electric power consumption of a household fridge. The key idea is to reflect wasteful behavior on the feedback to a user, rather than mere amount of consumption or duration of opening a door of a fridge.

This research analyzed the effect of rational and emotional response and social distance on people's acceptance for advices online by the construal level theory. An experiment was completed to test the relationship between advisers and questioners and verify the content of online feedback would influence people's acceptance for advices on social network site. The online response included emotional advice and rational advice. Social distance between advisers and questioners was divided to close social distance condition and distant social distance condition. The study showed: (1) comparing with emotional advice, rational advice had a higher persuasive effect in both close and distant social distance conditions; (2) the impact of feedback from people with close social distance was stronger than the impact of the advices from people with distant social distance; (3) there existed an interaction effect between social distance and affective advice. The results revealed that the adviser's affective expression and relationship with the questioner would interactively impact the online persuasive effect.
The theory of reasoned action was examined as a theoretical model which explains the relationships among belief, attitude, and intention regarding the policy of limiting the total number of visitors per day in the national parks during the high-demand season. Also, effects of persuasive messages developed to change users' attitude toward the policy positively were examined. Among the visitors in Kyeryongsan National Park, 563 visitors participated in on-site and mail survey. The number of visitors who had positive and negative attitudes toward the policy was in the ratio of 43 to 49. A significantly positive relationship was found between the sum of belief and outcome evaluation crossproducts and attitude(r=0.42). Intention could be explained with attitude in an acceptable power ($R^2=0.32$). The visitors who had negative attitude and intention regarding the policy before the treatment were changed positively by the two types of persuasive messages. Among the visitors receiving the persuasive messages, 74% answered that carrying out the policy is good and 66% intended to agree to carrying out the policy. It was indicated that the persuasive messages were an effective communication method between park managers and users.
