Risk-Accepting Personality and Associated Factors among Korean Farmers (농업인의 농작업 위험 수용도 및 관련 요인)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to examine risk-accepting personality traits and associated factors among farmers. Methods: Data were collected from farmers aged over 40 living in Goryeong, North Gyeongsang-do Province, Korea. Study participants were enrolled in the Korean Rural Cohort study from 2011 to 2014. Surveys for the risk perception of farming were made through face-to-face interviews. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analysis were conducted adjusting for gender, age, marital status, and education. Results: Several factors such as gender, age, marital status, age first worked as a farmer, duration of farming, and history of pesticide poisoning were associated with risk-accepting personality traits among farmers. Farmers with risk-accepting personalities tend to be older, less educated, and have self-employed health insurance. Farmers who started farming after the age of 50 are likely to be risk averse compared to farmers who started farming before the age of 20 (OR=0.41, 95% CI; 0.21, 0.82). Frequent spraying of pesticides was marginally associated with higher risk acceptance among female farmers (OR=1.61, 95% CI: 0.99, 2.64). Male farmers who had experienced pesticide poisoning in their lifetime showed higher odds of risk-accepting personality traits (OR=2.20, 95% CI: 1.03, 4.72) Conclusion: Risk-acceptors were more likely to spray pesticides frequently and to experience more pesticide poisoning compared to risk-averse individuals. This result suggests that farming hazards are to some degree driven by risk-accepting personality traits. Further investigation of how risk-accepting behaviors influence farming practices and pesticide poisoning is needed.

  • Objectives: Eyeblinking varied depending on individual cognitive abilities or personality traits thought to related to brain mechanisms of sensory modulation. This study explored whether personality traits are related to the rate of eye blinks and how eyeblink and evoked potential augumenting-reducing(EPAR) interact Methods: Forty four students were studied with EPAR topography to explore how eyeblinks, personality and EPAR interact The Zuckerman Sensation Seeking Scale(SSS) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ) were used as personality measured by a stimulus response program during EP study. Results: Rate of blink increased as intensity of light increased. The General(GEN), Thrill and Adventure Seeking(TAS), Experience Seeking(ES) and Disinhibition(DS) subscales in SSS and Extraversion-Introversion(E) subscale in EPQ showed significant negative correlations with number of eyeblinks in the hightest intensity of light, whereas Neuroticism(N) subscales in EPQ showed a positive correlation. Correlation between number of eyeblinks with the brightest light and EPAR slope varied topographically. The strongest positive correlation was noted in right posterior temporal area. Conclusion: High sensation seekers blinked significantly fewer times than lower sensation seeker did. Higher personality correlations with eyeblink than with EP may imply that the eyeblink works as a primary filter since it is more directly related to central mechanisms of sensory modulation than EP. The right posterior temporal area may play an important role in modulation of visual stimuli.

  • In this study of the correlates of peer victimization, 584 $4^{th}$ grade children in Seoul answered questionnaires regarding their personality traits, parent attachment and the marital conflict of their parents. Subjects and their peers also reported on peer aggression and victimization by peers. Data were analyzed by partial correlation, controlling for gender. Children's sociability/activity related positively to peer-rated peer aggression and negatively to self- and peer-rated victimization by peers. Children's shyness/emotionality related positively to self-reported peer aggression and to self- and peer-rated victimization by peers. Parent attachment related negatively to self-reported peer aggression and victimization by peers and positively to peer-rated peer aggression. Marital conflict related positively to self-reported peer aggression and to self- and peer-rated victimization by peers. Marital conflict was the most influential on peer aggression and children's personality traits were on victimization by peers.

Gender Differences Between the Relative Contributions of Variables to Problem Finding in Ill-structured and Moderately Structured Problem Situation (구조화 정도가 다른 문제 상황에서 문제발견에 대한 제 변인의 상대적 기여도에서의 남녀 차이)

  • The 166 elementary school students of this study were divided into four groups by gender and degree of structure in problem situations. Written instruments ascertained intelligence, conceptual knowledge, science process skills, divergent thinking, intrinsic/extrinsic motivation, personality traits, and home environment. Results were that male students scored higher on problem finding in the ill-structured than in the moderately structured problem situation. In the ill-structured problem situation, personality traits, conceptual knowledge, and intrinsic motivation contributed to the scores of male students and home environment and conceptual knowledge contributed to the scores of female students. In the moderately structured problem situation, personality traits and intrinsic motivation contributed to the scores of all students, but science process skills contributed to the scores of female students only.

  • When implementing a new information system, the success has been infrequent even though implementing a new IS can bring about various benefits to organizations. Employee resistance has been identified as a critical reason for such failure of implementing and operating a new IS. The vital role of orgazniational support with employee personality traits (e.g., tolerance for ambiguity and openness to expeirence) to reduce employee resistance has been missing when explaining to the failure of impleneting a new IS. The purpose of this study was to test a research model regarding employee resistnace, investigating the relationship bewteen organizational support and employee personality traits in that how organizational support influences employee resistance and also how employee personality traits (e.g., tolerance for ambiguity and openness to expeirence) interact with organizational support to decrease employee resistance the most. The results of this study supported our hypotheses and theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Gender Differences in the Factors Affecting Elementary School Students' Ability to Identify Scientific Problems (초등학교 아동의 과학적 문제 발견 능력에 영향을 미치는 관련 변인에서의 남녀 차이)

  • This study investigated gender differences in the factors affecting elementary school students' ability to identify scientific problems. Scientific problem finding tasks, involving written instruments including IQ tests, content knowledge, science process skills, divergent thinking skills, intrinsic/extrinsic motivation, personality traits, and home environment were administered to 96 elementary school students(male; 50 & female: 46). The data collected was analyzed by means of a t-test, Pearson's correlation, multiple regression analysis, and canonical correlation analysis. The finding indicated that there were significant gender differences in scientific problem finding performance. Female students were significantly higher in both total score and elaborate score of scientific problem finding than male students. Personality traits and intrinsic motivation positively and extrinsic motivation negatively predicted male students' abilities in scientific problem finding. Science process skills, personality traits and intrinsic motivation positively and extrinsic motivation negatively predicted female students' scientific problem finding and IQ positively predicted female students' elaborate score of scientific problem finding.

  • This paper aims to investigate the difference in perception about businesses' diverse marketing-mix activities depending on personality traits and its influence upon consumers' buying intention. For this research, a total of 400 men and women in Seoul and nearby capital areas, the most potent buyers of cell phones mostly in their 20s, were randomly chosen for questionnaires. Among them, 298 were finally selected in consideration of the validity of their responses. This paper is founded on two hypotheses; there may be some difference in perception about marketing-mix activities depending on personality traits and perceived marketing-mix activities may affect consumers' buying intention. For statistical analyses, this paper employs the SPSSWIN 14.0. The results are as follows;

Young Children's Creative Traits, Personality, and Demographic Variables to Their Learning Readiness (유아의 학습준비도에 대한 창의적 특성과 성격 및 사회인구학적 변인)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the young children's creative trait and personality affecting their learning readiness. The participants were 131 young children in kindergartens or nursery schools and their mothers from Seoul, Gyeonggi and Chungnam province. The instruments were the Korea Learning Readiness Test, Young Children's Creative Traits Test, and Young Children's Personality Test. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, t-test, Pearson's partial correlation, stepwise multiple regression, and Scheff$\'{e}$ test by SPSS PC(version17.0) program. The results were as follows. Firstly, there were no significant differences in young children's learning readiness, creative trait and personality by children's age, location, school type, father's age, mother's educational level and mother's job type, while there were significant differences in the creative trait and the subfactor scores of personality by children's sex, father's educational level and parents' job type. Secondly, there was a positive partial correlation(r = .20~.24) between young children's learning readiness and creative trait, while there were no correlations between their learning readiness and personality and between their personality and creative trait. Thirdly, cognitive factor of creative trait and father's educational level did not effectively explain the children's learning readiness.

Personality Trait in Panic Disorder Patient and Its Clinical Significance (공황장애 환자의 성격특성과 임상적 의의)

  • Forty patients meeting DSM-III-H criteria for panic disorder and 51 normal controls were assessed with the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-Revised(PDQ-R), a self-rating scale designed to assess Axis II personality disorders and traits. Results replicated previous findings of a preponderance of dependent, avoidant, and histrionic features. But our result showed other features such as paranoid, schizotypal, borderline, and antisocial traits also. Patients were divided into two groups according to the severity of their personality traits(high or low). These groups were compared in various panic symptomatology and SCL-90-R. None of the specific symptom dimensions in panic disorder, i.e. panic, anxiety, agoraphobia, social impairment, or chronicity was different between groups. Rather, high personality trait groups were found to have significantly more symptomatology in SCR-90-R than low personality groups. Result indicated that patients exhibiting a greater number of personality traits were also significantly more symptomatic. The results suggested a possible link beteween panic disorder and personality disorder. And, general factors such as depression, social or interpersonal sensitivity might provide a much better explanation of personality disorders in panic patients.

An Association Study of the 5-HTTLPR and COMT Genes Polymorphisms and Personality Traits (5-HTTLPR과 COMT 유전자 다형성과 성격 특성에 대한 연합연구)

  • Background:Serotonin transporter gene-linked polymorphism region(5-HTTLPR) and catechol-O-methyltransferase( COMT) genes are thought to be important factors in some personality traits and the etiology of anxiety disorder. The goal of this study was to determine the role of these genes in personality traits. Method:The participants included 116 healthy adults with no history of psychiatric disorders and other physical illness for the last 6 months. All participants were tested by Temperament and Character Inventory(TCI). The 5-HTTLPR, COMT val158met gene polymorphisms were analyzed with PCR(Polymerase Chain Reaction). Differences on TCI dimensions and sub-scales among groups were examined with t-test and ANOVA. Result:There were possible relationships of the 5-HTTLPR with self-transcendence(P=0.050) and COMT val158met polymorphism with cooperativeness(P=0.053). Conclusion:We found associations between 5-HTTLPR, COMT polymorphisms and the some TCI character dimensions. Further studies of polymorphisms of other genes and their interactions may clarify the complex relationship between personality and genes.
