For this aim, a research was conducted from Nov. 19 through Dec. 22, 2007 by means of questionnaires distributed to 800 students enrolled in the 5th and 6th grades of 4 elementary schools in a urban-rural combined city. Out of the questionnaires distributed, 785 were collected and put to analysis by using SPSS 13.0 program to determine t-test, ANOVA, logistic regression, etc. 1. The maximum scores of safety consciousness revealing relatively high level of safety consciousness. There was, however, statistically significant difference by grade, type of residence, school life and academic achievements. In detail, 5th graders featured higher level of safety consciousness and those who live in apartments, lead a pleasant life at school and get better academic scores tended to keep higher level of safety consciousness. 2. The subjects of the high scored of activities to prevent accidents, with a statistically significant difference by gender, grade and individual personality. Females, 5th graders and active students were found to be more conscious of preventive activities for accidents. 3. In general, 6th graders and active students turned out to have experienced more accidents. 4. The main factors exerting influence on occurrence of accidents on the part of elementary school students are known to be preventive actions and consciousness of traffic safety in the category of safety consciousness. The significant variable in preventive actions was preventive actions of traffic accidents, burns and intoxication by category of accidents, but individual personality by category of general characters. Sixth graders and male students experienced more accidents, without significantly significant difference, though. As a result, From the above findings, prevention of safety accidents is found to be very important for elementary school students. It is therefore suggested that schools as well as homes should continue to conduct practical education to prevent accidents with priority placed on familiarizing students with preventive activities in daily life in consideration of their personal characters.

  • Recreation forests are in the spotlight as the place for personality development, mind and body comfort, companionship, and environment education in forests and valleys. Visitors to recreation forests have been on the increase along with booming in recreation forest building since 1988. Recreation forests are being categorized according to some features such as regional and environmental condition. Recreation forests, however, have not met the expectations of some visitors who want to take a rest with calmness due to the influence of the 5-day-work-week system, increasing interest in rest, leisure, and well-being, and users converge during weekends, summer, and the tourist season. In order to improve visitors' satisfaction efficiently, this study surveyed the level of satisfaction in each cluster based on the precedent study which had classified 85 national or public recreation forests in Korea into clusters. Questionnaires were distributed properly to each cluster and, of the 1,132 questionnaires collected, 1,015 were valid and used for analysis. Reliability of questionnaires and statistical validity of the model were verified. As a result, there are meaningful differences in the ranking of independent variables which affect the level of satisfaction according to clusters. Variables in rest and fatigue recovery have the strongest influence on the level of satisfaction in the clusters of potential factor, internal activation factor, and mixed potential capacity factor. In the use performance and visiting condition factor cluster, appropriateness of visit cost is most influential and, in the education cluster, connectivity with tourist attractions around it is most affective. These results can provide priority in services and maintenance of recreation forests for improving the level of satisfaction and differentiate the distribution of resources according to clusters.

  • This study examines differences in perception between applicants and admissions committee members regarding evaluation criteria for admission to career and technical high schools in Seoul. This investigation, based on "The survey on policy for career and technical high school admissions," seeks to explore and consider the various criteria for selecting and evaluating students. The target populations of the survey were the educators in charge of admission and freshmen in Seoul career and technical high schools. We report three major findings, with the first pertaining to the existing criteria and policies for admission to career and technical high schools. While educators agreed with the intent and reasoning behind the school's competitive spots, they were overall dissatisfied with the selection method and the lack of a requirement for academic transcripts. Matriculated students, in comparison, expressed greater satisfaction with the existing criteria for admission. Secondly, when assessing the importance of various evaluation components in an application, educators viewed the interview and attendance record as the most valuable components of the application, followed by future plans, personal statement, volunteer work, and portfolio, in order of decreasing importance. Students ranked attendance record, interview, personal statement, portfolio, future plans, and volunteer work as most to least important components of their application. Thus, students regarded the personal statement and portfolios as being of higher priority than did the educators. The last major finding pertained to students' rationale for applying and educators' selection criteria. At the time of application, students focused on aptitude and job prospects after graduation, while educators valued personality and competence. In summary, the applicants' viewpoints and actions aligned much more closely with the mission of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education than did those of the educators in charge of admission. Thus, in order to establish a consensus between the policy and mission of career and technical high schools, each career and technical high school should clarify the exact criteria for their ideal candidate. There is also a need to bridge the gap in perception between the applicants and educators regarding selection strategy, to establish a harmonized evaluation criteria. These goals are necessary to attract and recruit talented, bright individuals who will meet the demands of today's society.
