  • Purpose: This study was to explore the hope structures of the newly diagnosed cancer patients by examining the relationships between hope and the three concepts of 'Personal Spirit', 'Risk' and 'Authentic Caring' which composed the multidimensions of the Nekolaichuk and Bruera's hope model. Methods: Data was collected via survey from 32 newly diagnosed cancer patients. The perceived meaning of life (PML) for 'personal spirit', perceived confidence in cure (PCC) for 'risk', and perceived family support (PFS) and perceived support from medical team (PSM) for 'authentic caring' were adapted from the definitions of the concepts in the model. Hope, PML, and PCC were measured with VAS. PFS and PSM were measured with Korean version of 'Cobb's family support scale', which was modified by Kang. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to identify the relationships among the concepts. Results: The significant relationships were revealed between hope and PCC (p<.001), hope and PML (p<.001), PML and PCC (p<.001), PFS and PML (p=.030), and PSM and PML (p=.047). Conclusion: The newly diagnosed cancer patients experience hope in different ways. The cancer patients' hope immediate after diagnosis, however, is most likely to be experienced as seeking balance between uncertainty about cancer treatment and the meaning of life.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to examine the relationships between clinical practice stress and burnout, and the mediating role of empathy in nursing students. Methods: A cross-sectional research design was employed. One hundred seventeen nursing students completed questionnaires on clinical practice stress, empathy (perspective-taking, fantasy, empathic concern and personal distress) and burnout in December 2017. IBM SPSS Statistics 23 was used and descriptive statistics, frequency, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression were conducted. Baron & Kenny method and Sobel test were adopted for analysis of the mediation effect (personal distress of empathy). Results: The mean scores of clinical practice stress and burnout were 3.45 and 43.09, and perspective-taking, fantasy, empathic concern and personal distress of empathy were 2.67, 2.42, 2.64 and 2.19, respectively. The highest relationship between clinical practice stress and empathy was personal distress of empathy (r=.32, p<.001). Burnout was positively associated with clinical practice stress and personal distress of empathy (r=.22, p=.015; r=.51, p<.001). Personal distress of empathy demonstrated a complete mediating effect on the relationship between clinical practice stress and burnout (Z=3.22, p=.001). Conclusion: These results showed that decreasing personal distress of empathy is important for nursing students, and may help in reducing clinical practice stress and burnout.

  • The main aim of this investigation is to explore the relationships between emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal accomplishment, and job satisfaction among employees working in the banking sector. A total of 214 respondents were surveyed for the purpose of this investigation and selected randomly from different banks located in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (K.S.A.). Job Burnout Inventory developed by Maslach and Jackson (1981) was taken into consideration to assess emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and sense of personal accomplishment, and job satisfaction scale was used to measure the degree of satisfaction level of the employees. The collected data were analyzed by means of descriptive and inferential statistics with the help of statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The most eye-catching findings of the investigation revealed that emotional exhaustion had the greater mean as compared to depersonalization and personal accomplishment. The inverse significant correlation has been observed between emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and job satisfaction while positive and significant relationship was observed between personal accomplishment and job satisfaction. Further, the result of the investigation from regression test indicates that the relationship existed between emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal accomplishment, and job satisfaction among employees working in the banking sector in the Kingdom.

As a result, the internal value (${\beta}=.236$, p<.0.01), and external value (${\beta}=.352$, p<.001) have the significant positive relationships with respect to quality. Second, the external value (${\beta}=.305$, p<.001) has the positive relationship with regard to accessibility, but the internal value has no significant relationships with level of accessibility. Third, the internal value (${\beta}=.828$, p<.001) has the significant positive relationship with regard to service, but there was no significant influences between external value and service in this study. Fourth, the internal value (${\beta}=.472$, p<.001), the external value (${\beta}=.479$, p<.001) were critical antecedents of the quality. • In this study, we investigated the elementary school students' perceptions toward scientific and/or technological professions in the views of accuracy, complexity, and diversity, and compared them by the students' grades and their science-related career aspiration levels. We also studied the relationships among the students' perceptions toward scientific and/or technological professions and their cognitive (science achievement), affective (enjoyment of science lessons, attitude to scientific inquiry, self-efficacy), and behavioral (participation in science-related activity) characteristics. The subjects were 369 students of 4th and 6th grades at three elementary schools in Seoul. The results revealed that the students were relatively well aware of what works and professions in science and/or technology were, but they did not have good understanding of them in the views of complexity and diversity. The 6th graders had better perceptions toward science and/or technological professions than 4th graders, although they showed the lower scores of attitude to scientific inquiry. Moreover, the higher science-related career aspirations were, the higher scores in all tests of the perceptions and the personal characteristics were. The students' perceptions toward scientific and/or technological professions were found to have relationships with their cognitive, affective, and behavioral characteristics. The multiple regression analysis of the personal characteristics on the perceptions toward scientific and/or technological professions indicated that science-related activity, science achievement, and self-efficacy were significant predictors. Educational implications are discussed.

  • Based on the theoretical framework of the Double ABCX model of family stress and adaptation, this study was to analysis the causal relationships of stressors (psychological sexual, and physical wife abuse), personal resources (self-efficacy and self-esteem) and social support(emotional and informational support), appraisal(positive appraisal and downward comparisons) with adaptation (psychological well-being and somatic symptoms). Self-administered questionnaire method was used to collect data from 264 wives residing in Chonbuk-do and Kyonggi-do area. The causal model was tested and modified by the maximum likelihood method using UISREL 7 program. Results showed that wife abuse had effect on adaptation indirectly through the latent variables of personal resource and appraisal, which influenced the adaptation directly. In addition, social support indirectly affect the adaptation through personal resource and appraisal. It was also found that all these variables explained 27.6% of the total variance of wives'adaptation, and that personal resources was the most powerful variable in predicting the adaptation of the wives.

  • A 4-year joint research project (1999-2003), entitled "The Development of Multiple Talents (DMT)", has been designed and carrying out under the sponsorship of the National Science Council, R.O.C. (Taiwan). A 3-dimension construct is proposed for the DMT: form of talents (10 forms, mainly based on Gardner′s theory of multiple intelligences), function of talents (3 functions, based on Stemberg′s conception of successful intelligence), and developmental stage (4 stages, from pre-school to senior high). To take an example of its empirical studies, Wu and Chien (2000), based on a renovated conception of personal intelligence, developed the "Personal Intelligence Inventory" (PII). By means of the PII, it was found that there were some personal intelligence differences between gifted and regular pupils: however, gifted group was not as superior as on academic performance to the regular one (Wu '||'&'||' Chien, 2000). It was also found that there were significant relationships between pupils′personal intelligence and school adjustment in both groups (Tsai '||'&'||' Wu, 2000).
