  • The hydrogen permselective membrane were prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) aiming at the applications to hydrogen iodide decomposition in the thermochemical IS process, and it was evaluated for the possibility as a separation membrane. An electron probe X-ray microanalyzer (EPMA) and SEM picture were used to analyze the morphology and structure of the prepared membranes. It was confirmed that Zr-Si-O layer exist in the surface of the prepared membrane using zirconia coated support. Single-component permeance to $H_2$ and $N_2$ were measured at $300{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. Hydrogen permeance through the Z-1 membrane at a permeation temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ was about $1{\times}10^{-7}\;mol{\cdot}Pa^{-1}{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. The selectivities of $H_2/N_2$ at $600^{\circ}C$ were 5.0 and 5.75 for Z-1 and Z-2 membrane, respectively.

  • Aromatic polyetherimide membranes were prepared by dry/wet phase inversion method and investigated regarding the pervaporation characteristic of water-alcohol mixtures by using the permselective property of imide group and the structure modification of skin layer of the membrane. The membrane selectivity increased with the reaction time of surface-modification, to some extent, and the density of top layer tends to increases with increasing the reaction time. In the case of dense membrane, the separation factor was 160 and 2000 for 90wt% ethanol mixture and 90wt% isopropanol solution, respectively, which implies that aromatic polyetherimide has a high permselectivity. The temperature dependence of permeation flux seems to follow an Arrhenius type at the temperature range of ($40^{\circ}C-70^{\circ}C$).

  • The Preparation and electrochemical characterization of anion-exchange membranes containing pyridinium groups were performed. As a result, the pyridinium membranes showed good electrochemical properties, comparable to those of the commercial membranes, with electrical resistance of less than $3.0 {\Xi}cm^2$ in a 0.5 mol $dm^{-3}$ NaCl and high ionic permselectivity (the transport number of $Cl^-$ ions being 0.97). Moreover, water splitting in the membranes containing pyridinium group was about two or three order of magnitude lower than those in the commercial membranes (e.g. AM-1, Tokuyama Crop., Japan) at the same current density because the resonance effedt in the quaternary aromatic pyridinium group contributed to their molecular stability. In addition, the electrodialytic properties of the pyridinium membranes were evaluated in a semi-pilot scale.

  • In this study, novel pore-filled anion-exchange membranes (PFAEMs) with low electrical resistance, high permselectivity, and low water-splitting flux property under a concentration polarization condition have been developed for the enhancement in the efficiency of electrochemical water treatment processes. The base membranes have been prepared by filling a copolymer containing quaternary ammonium groups with an excellent ion-exchange capability into a porous polyolefin substrate, showing a high performance superior to that of a commercial membrane. In addition, it was confirmed that the electrochemical membrane performances are preserved while the water-splitting flux is effectively controlled by coating an imidazolium polymer onto the surface of the base membrane. The prepared PFAEMs revealed remarkably low electrical resistances of about 1/6~1/8 compared to those of a commercial membrane, and simultaneously low water-splitting flux comparable with that of cation-exchange membranes under a concentration polarization condition.

  • We prepared heterogeneous ion exchange membranes (hetero-IEMs) for the application of membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI). Hetero-IEMs were fabricated by compressing the mixture of ion exchange resin powders and liner low density polyethylene (LLDPE). Characterization and MCDI desalination experiments were carried for the fabricated membranes. Electrical resistance of membrane decreased and water content increased with increasing the resin content in the hetero-IEMs. However, transport number indicating permselectivity of membrane was similar with that of commercial homogenesous ion exchange membrane. The results of MCDI desalination experiments showed that the adsorption amount for hetero-IEM was about 90% of that of homogeneous membrane due to the high electrical resistance of hetero-IEM. Although desalination performance of hetero-IEM decreased compared with homogeneous membrane, it was thought to be applicable to MCDI because of simple preparation and low price.

  • A porous stainless steel (SUS) as a substrate of silica composite membranes for hydrogen purification was used to improve mechanical strength of the membranes for industrial application. The SUS support was successfully modified by using submicron Ni powder, $SiO_2$ sols with particle size of 500 nm and 150 nm in turns. Silica top layer was coated on the modified supports under various preparation conditions such as calcination temperature, dipping time and repeating number of dipping-drying process. The calcination temperature for proper sintering was between H ttig temperature and Tamman temperature of the coating materials. Maximum hydrogen selectivity was investigated by changing dipping time. As repeating number of dipping-drying process increased, permeances of nitrogen and hydrogen were decreased and $H_2/N_2$ selectivity was increased due to the reduction of non-selective pinholes and mesopores. For the silica membrane prepared under optimized conditions, permeance of hydrogen was about $3\;{\times}\;10^{-5}\;cm^3{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}{\cdot}cmHg^{-1}$ combined with $H_2/N_2$ seletivity of about 20.

  • In the present study, Pebax-2533 plate membranes were prepared by drying precursor solutions which were obtained by dissolving Pebax-2533 polymer in 1-Propanol/n-Butanol mixed solvents. And then the $CO_2$ and $N_2$ permeation behaviors were tested by using a time-lag system. The prepared Pebax-2533 plate membranes showed a considerable $CO_2/N_2$ separation performance : the $CO_2$ permeability was 130 to 288 barr, and the $CO_2/N_2$ permselectivity was 5-8. The $CO_2$ permeation data obtained by varying feed pressure, permeation temperature, and solvent composition announced that not only the $CO_2$ sorption but also the $CO_2$ diffusion is equally important in the overall $CO_2$ permeation.

  • The inorganic components in tobacco sheet extract have significant influence on the sensory taste of the cigars and the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke. To identify the contributions of the divalent inorganic components on harmful components delivery in cigarette smoke, a self-made selective electrodialysis was assembled with monovalent ion-selective ion exchange membranes. The influences of current density and extract content on the desalination performance were investigated. Result indicates that the majorities chloride, nitrate, and sulfate ions were removed, comparing with 50-60% of potassium and only less than 10% of magnesium and calcium ions removed in the investigated current density. The permselectivity of the tested cations across the Selemion CSO cation exchange membranes follows the order: $K^+>Ca^{2+}>Mg^{2+}$. A current density of $15mA/cm^2$ is an optional choice by considering both the energy consumption and separation efficiency. When the extract contents are in the range of 7%-20%, the removal ratios the potassium ions are kept around 60%, while the removal ratios of the calcium and magnesium ions fluctuate in the range of 16-27% and 8-14%, respectively. The tobacco smoke experiments indicated that the divalent metal ions have dual roles for the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke. The divalent potassium and calcium ions were unfavorable for the total particulate matter emission but beneficial to decrease the HCN delivery in the mainstream cigarette smoke. The selective electrodialysis is a robust technology to decrease the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke.

  • The stability of the prepared silica membrane by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method in the HI-$H_2O$ gaseous mixture was evaluated aiming at the application for hydrogen iodide decomposition in the thermochemical IS process. Porous $\alpha$-alumina having pore size of 100 nm was modified by the different CVD temperature using tetraethoxysilane as the Si source. The CVD temperature was $700^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$, and $600^{\circ}C$. The $H_2$/H$_2$ selectivities of the modified membranes which were measured by single-component permeation experiment showed 43.2, 12.6, and 8.7 at $600^{\circ}C$ for the M1 (CVD temperature was $700^{\circ}C$), M2 (CVD temperature was $650^{\circ}C$) and M3 membranes (CVD temperature was $600^{\circ}C$), respectively. Stability experiment in the HI-$H_2O$ gaseous mixture was carried out at $450^{\circ}C$. The prepared silica membrane at $600^{\circ}C$ of CVD temperature was more stable than that at the other CVD temperature.
