The objective of this work is to evaluate the effect of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers on electroosmotic flow (EOF) through skin. The effect of size and concentration of dendrimer was studied, using generation 1, 4 and 7 dendrimer (G1, G4 and G7, respectively). As a marker molecule for the direction and magnitude of EOF, a neutral molecule, acetoaminophen (AAP) was used. The visualization of dendrimer permeation into the current conducting pore (CCP) of skin was made using G4-fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) conjugate and confocal microscopy. Without dendrimer, anodal flux of AAP was much higher than cathodal or passive flux. When G1 dendrimer was added, anodal flux decreased, presumably due to the decrease in EOF by the association of G1 dendrimer with net negative charge in CCP. As the generation increased, larger decrease in anodal flux was observed, and the direction of EOF was reversed. Small amount of methanol used for the preparation of dendrimer solution also contributed to the decrease in anodal flux of AAP. Cross-sectional view perpendicular to the skin surface by confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) study showed that G4 dendrimer-FITC conjugate (G4-FITC) can penetrate into the viable epidermis and dermis under anodal current. The permeation route seemed to be localized on hair follicle region. These results suggest that PAMAM dendrimers can permeate into CCP and change the magnitude and direction of EOF. Overall, we obtained a better understanding on the mechanistic insights into the electroosmosis phenomena and its role on flux during iontophoresis.
The method measuring LEP (liquid entry pressure) was optimized to evaluate the wettabilities of hydrophobic membranes which might affect long-term durability of membrane in MD (membrane distillation) process. Conductivity of the permeate was monitored to measure the LEPs of PE (polyethylene) and PVDF (polyvinylidene di-fluoride) hollow fiber membranes from highly concentrated synthetic feed water of 20 wt% NaCl. Holding time over 5 min and the ratio of membrane area to the tank volume more than $10m^2/m^3$ were required to ensure LEP value.
This study focuses on preparation of PVDF/PDMS composite membranes to effectively separate butanol from water-butanol mixture using pervaporation. We prepared various composite membranes by changing PVDF concentration of support layer and PDMS cross-linking condition of active layer. Pervaporation performance was tested by measuring butanol flux and separation factor with various cases of butanol concentration, temperature, and flow rate of feed. As results, performance of our novel PVDF/PDMS membranes surpasses that of PVDF/POMS membrane, manufactured by GKSS (Germany), in term of butanol flux, permeate concentration, and separation factor.

Mixed matrix membranes of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), loaded with phosphomolybdic heteropolyacid (HPA) and crosslinked with glutaraldehyde have been prepared by the solution casting technique. Pervaporation (PV) experiments have been performed at $30^{\circ}C$ to separate water-isopropanol feed mixtures containing 10 to 40 wt.% of water. The membranes were characterized by DSC and DMTA to understand their thermal behavior and mechanical strength properties. At high content (i.e. 7 wt.% with respect to weight of PVA) of HPA, the mixed matrix membranes could extract water efficiently on the permeate side with a selectivity of 90,000 and a flux of 0.032 $kg/m^2h$ for 10 wt.% of water containing feed mixture (the lowest feed composition of water studied). Flux of the mixed matrix membranes decreased with increasing concentrations of HPA.
This study uses pervaporation process to separate small amount of organic trichloroethylene, chloroform and perchloroethylene from contaminated water, since chlorinated hydrocarbones are known to be cancer suspecting compounds. For the separation of small amount of halogenated organic compound dissolved in wastewater, pervaporation membranes should be polymers that possess affinity with orgnic compounds and hydrophobicity. We used polyisobutylene, polyetheramide and polydimethylsiloxane membranes. The degree of affinity between organics and polymers were measured by contact angle method. We had good separation results that separation factor ranged from 34 to 19100 and permeate flux was$19.7~140g/m^2hr$.
Submerged membrane bioreactor(SMBR) and reverse osmosis(R/O) systems treated dye wastewater for reusing of industrial water. The permeate fluxes of SMBR at 20-25 cmHg of lab. test and field test were 10 LMH($1/m^2$.hr) all test. Removal efficiencies of CODcr, $COD_{Mn}$ and T-N were 93%, 90% and 60% in the SMBR, respectively The advanced treatment of combined process(SMBR+R/0) was accomplished for increasing the removal efficiency of non-biodegradable materials and T-N. Therefore, the removal efficiency of T-N obtained in 80% above, then nitrogen concentration was under 15 mg/L. The combined process(SMBR+R/0) was suitable to reuse of the dye wastewater.
To improve pervaporation performance of water/ethanol mixtures, chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) blended and phosphorylated chitosan composite membranes were prepared. Chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) blends were prepared with various blend ratios and then crosslinked with glutaraldehyde by two methods. With increasing crosslinking agent content and crosslinking times separation factor increased and permeate flux decreased. Separation factor of the membrane which contains glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent was higher than that of the membrane surface crosslinked. Phosphorylated chitosan was prepared with various reaction times and composite membrane was prepared. As reaction times increased, the separation factor increased with high affinity for water.

This study compares characteristic of membrane fouling in MBR-RO systems. In lab. scale MBRs test, MBRs were operated at different Flux(10, 20, 30 & 40 LMH) and temperature(10, 15, 20, 25 & $30^{\circ}C$). The results show that MBR permeate was measured lower amounts of organic substances in Higher flux and lower temperature and led to lower RO fouling rates. The main cause was that due to cake fouling formed on membrane surfaces in MBRs. Under both cases, Cake layer of membrane surfaces formed in MBRs removed RO fouling factors, polysaccharide and protein, because of cake layer attached on membrane surfaces greater amounts of organic substances. This study implies that optimization of MBR with operating conditions is a crucial strategy to RO membrane fouling control.
Total resistance of membrane in a micro-filtration system using a metal membrane was mainly attributed to the permeate resistance of cake layer($R_c$), which was formed by deposited particles from the physico-chemical interactions of solids on membrane surface. Intermittent back ozonation was highly effective than the air backwashing for fouling reduction. As far the operational effect, under same ozone injection, the increase of gas flow-rate was more favorable than the increase of injection time far the recovery of permeation flux. As the filtration time was longer, the effect of flux recovery by intermittent back-ozonation decreased. Therefore, it is preferable to operate membrane cleaning before the foulant is consolidated on membrane surface.
The object of study were the development of membrane process and the optimization of operation condition for membrane system, which was used the pre-treatment system of tap water treatment in steady of conventional process such as coagulation, sedimentation. The higher steady flux is very important factor, by a suitable pre-treatment and optimization of operating condition such as fouling control, crossflow and backwashing method, in membrane system. So, we were observed the effect of flux decline for membrane used by 4 type ultrafiltration(UF) membrane pre-treatment process, and optimized the operation condition of filtration system under various MWCO(Molecular weight cut-off), operation pressure, linear velocity and temperature to maintain higher flux. From these experiment, we were identified that UF process showed a slower flux decline rate and a higher flux recovery than microfiltration(MF) membrane. The water quality of UF permeate was better than that of MF, and was not effected pre-treatment process. In the operation condition, the rate of flux decline was diminished by a higher linear velocity and operation temperature, lower pressure.
