  • Batch and column tests were conducted with common groundwater contaminants (i.e., trichloroethylene) to determine transport parameters and reactivity of the foundry sands. The reactivities of foundry sands for common groundwater contaminants are comparable to or slightly higher than those for Peerless iron a common medium used in permeable reactive barriers. In addition, the TOC and clay in foundry sands can significantly retard the movement of target contaminants, which may result in lower effluent concentrations of contaminants due to biodegradation. In general, permeable reactive barriers with the thickness of 1m can be constructed with many foundry sands to treat typical groundwater comtaminants provided the zero-valent iron content in the foundry sand is higher than 1%.

  • In this investigation, we observed surface morphology and porosity of a macroporous adsorbent made of Na-bentonite and Ca-bentonite as structure formation materials and grounded waste paper as macropore forming material for the development of a permeable reactive barrier to remove heavy metals in groundwater. Therefore, we selected minerals having higher cation exchange capacity among 2:1 clay minerals and other industrial minerals because sintering can significantly influence cation exchange capacity, resulting in drastic decrease in removal of heavy metals. The results showed that the increasing sintering temperature drastically decreased CEC by less than 10 % of the indigenous CEC carried by the selected minerals. One axial compressibility test results showed that the highest value was obtained from 5% newspaper waste pulp for both structure formation materials of Na-bentonite and Ca-bentonite although there were not much difference in bulk density among treatments. The pore formation influenced by sintering temperature and period contributes removal of heavy metals passing through the sintered macroporous media having different water retention capacity.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate reductive dechlorination of aromatic hydrocarbons using zero valent metals (ZVMs) and catalysts as reactive materials for permeable reactive barriers (PRBs). A group of small aromatic hydrocarbons such as monochlorophenols, phenol, benzene were readily reduced with palladium catalyst and zero valent iron. Poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were also tested with the catalysts and zero valent metal combinations. The aromatic rings were reduced and partly reduced PAHs were found as the daughter compounds. Current preliminary study implicate that ZVMs and modified catalysts can be successfully applied for PRBs which currently applicable for halogenated organic compounds and some inorganic contaminants including chromium(Ⅵ) and nitrate.

  • This study is to investigate the possibility of using activated carbon prepared from Iraqi date-pits (ADP) which are produced from palm trees (Phoenix dactylifera L.) as low-cost reactive material in the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) for treating lead (Pb+2) from the contaminated groundwater, and then compare the results experimentally with other common reactive materials such as commercial activated carbon (CAC), zeolite pellets (ZP). Factors influencing sorption such as contact time, initial pH of the solution, sorbent dosage, agitation speed, and initial lead concentration has been studied. Two isotherm models were used for the description of sorption data (Langmuir and Freundlich). The maximum lead sorption capacities were measured for ADP, CAC, and ZP and were found to be 24.5, 12.125, and 4.45 mg/g, respectively. The kinetic data were analyzed using various kinetic models particularly pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion. COMSOL Multiphysics 3.5a depend on finite element procedure was applied to formulate transmit of lead (Pb+2) in the two-dimensional numerical (2D) model under an equilibrium condition. The numerical solution shows that the contaminant plume is hindered by PRB.

  • A pilot-scale model test was performed to estimate the availability of new material, Fe-loaded zeolite, as the filling material in permeable reactive barrier (PRB) against the contaminated groundwater with both Cd and Cr(VI). Aquifer was simulated by filling up a large scale soil tank with sands, and mobilizing the water flow by the head difference of water level in both ends of the tank. Then, the mixture of concentrated Cd and Cr(VI) solution was injected into the aquifer to form a contaminant plume, and its behavior through Fe-loaded zeolite barrier was monitored. The test results showed that Fe-loaded zeolite barrier successfully treated the contaminant plume containing both Cd and Cr(VI) and that the immobilized contaminants in the barrier were not desorbed or released. The results indicated that the Fe-loaded zeolite could be a promising material in PRBs against the multiple contaminants with different ionic forms like Cr(VI) and Cd.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics of nitrate removal by conducting the column test in order to see the performance of surfactant modified zeolite (SMZ) as a permeable reactive barrier material. The prediction of nitrate removal was tested using the one-dimensional advective-dispersive model fitted to the experimental breakthrough curve. A methodology for scaling up to in-situ permeable reactive barrier was also proposed. The breakthrough of nitrate in the column packed with SMZ was well predicted using linear equilibrium adsorption model. The breakthrough time and half-life obtained by breakthrough experiment with variation of flowrates were decreased with the increase of flowrates. When 10㎥/day of groundwater containing the 50 mg/l of nitrate is to be treated to satisfy the potable water quality criteria (10 mg/l) by SMZ reactive barrier, 300 tons of SMZ and about 6 years of breakthrough time will be required, suggesting that 165 million wons are needed as barrier material expenses in each 6 years besides the initial design and construction expenses and the minimal monitoring and maintenance expenses.

  • The influence of temperature on the treatment efficiency of chlorinated organic substances contained in groundwater by permeable reactive barrier which is composed of $Fe^{\circ}$ has been investigated by constructing the Pourbaix diagrams for Fe-$H_2O$ system at different temperatures based on thermodynamic estimation. In aerobic condition, the equilibrium potentials for $Fe^{\circ}/Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}/Fe^{3+}$ were observed to increase, therefore, the dechlorination reaction for organic pollutants by $Fe^{\circ}$ was considered to decline with temperature due to the diminished oxidation of reactive barrier. The result for the variations of the ionization fraction of $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ ion in the pH range of 0 ~ 2.5 obtained by employing Visual MINTEQ program showed that the ionization fraction of $Fe^{2+}$ increased with pH, however, that of $Fe^{3+}$ decreased symmetrically and the extent of the variation of ionization fraction for both ions was raised as temperature rises. The equilibrium pH for $Fe^{3+}/Fe(OH)_3$ was examined to decrease with temperature so that the treatment efficiency of chlorinated organic substance was expected to decrease with temperature due to the enhanced formation of passivating film in aerobic condition. The change of the reactivity of a specific chemical species with temperature was defined quantitatively based on the area of its stable region in Pourbaix diagram and depending on this the reactivity of $Fe^{3+}$ was shown to decrease with temperature, however, that of $Fe(OH)_3$ was decreased monotonously as temperature is raised for $Fe^{3+}/Fe(OH)_3$ equilibrium system. In anaerobic condition, the equilibrium potential for $Fe^{\circ}/Fe^{2+}$ was observed to rise and the equilibrium pH for $Fe^{2+}/Fe(OH)_2$ were examined to decrease as temperature increases, therefore, similar to that for aerobic condition the efficiency of the dechlorination reaction for organic substances was considered to be diminished when temperature rises because of the reduced oxidation of $Fe^{\circ}$ and increased formation of $Fe(OH)_2$ passivating film.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the effect of proposed permeable eobarrier system for removal of PCE from groundwater. The materials used for the natural geobarrier are gravel bean and silty clay. In addition, the effect of Pyeongtaek soil on PRB assessed in this experiments. It was observed that the adsorption of PCE in natural geobarrier system is eligible for real site. However, natural geobarrier system has various factors based on using materials. Therefore, more laboratory work is needed to study about permeable geobarrier.

  • Rusted iron could retain activity to redox-sensitive pollutants in batch reactor. Flow-through columns packed with permeable reactive iron filings (Fe$^{0}$ ) between soil and sand layers were used to evaluate the applicability of bio-enhanced iron barriers to treat explosives-contaminated groundwater. One column was bioaugmented with municipal anaerobic sludge to evaluate the enhancement of biodegradation. Military contaminants (RDX, HMX, TNT, 2,4DNT, 2,6DNT), which coexist in soils at military sites, were completely removed in the bioaugmented Fe$^{0}$ layer after 8 months of operation. Overall, this research suggests that Fe$^{0}$ barriers can effectively clean up groundwater contaminated with military explosives, and that treatment efficiency can be enhanced by bioaugmentation.
