  • In this paper, we examine the steady state dynamic electromechanical behavior of an eccentric Yoffe crack in a piezoelectric ceramic layer bonded between two orthotropic elastic layers under the combined anti-plane mechanical shear and in-plane electrical loadings. We adopted permeable crack face condition. Numerical values on the dynamic energy release rate are obtained. The initial crack propagation orientation for PZT-5H piezoceramic is also predicted by maximum energy release rate criterion.

  • Rapid flow advancement without void formation is essential in the liquid composite molding (LCM) such as resin transfer molding (RTM) and vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). A highly permeable layer in multi-layered preform has an important role in improvement of the flow advancement. In this study, a multi-layered preform which consists of three layers is employed. Radial flow experiment is carried out for the multi-layered preform. A new analytic model for advancement of flow front is proposed and effective permeability is defined. The effective permeability for the multi-layered preform is obtained analytically and compared with experimental results. Compaction test is performed to determine the exact fiber volume traction of each layer in the multi-layered preform. Transverse permeability employed in modeling is measured experimentally unlike the previous studies. Accurate prediction of flow advancement is of great use for saving the processing time and enhancing product properties of the final part.

  • A field effect transistor(FET) type dissolved carbon dioxide($pCO_{2}$) sensor with a double layer structure of hydrogel membrane and $CO_{2}$ gas permeable membrane was fabricated by utilizing a $H^{+}$ ion selective field effect transistor(pH-ISFET) with Ag/AgCl reference electrode as a base chip. Formation of hydrogel membrane with photo-crosslinkable PVA-SbQ or PVP-PVAc/photosensitizer system was not suitable with the photolithographic process. Furthermore, hydrogel membrane on pH-ISFET base chip could be fabricated by photolithographic method with the aid of N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl othylenediarnine(TED) as $O_{2}$ quencher without using polyester film as a $O_{2}$ blanket during UV irradiation process. Photosensitive urethane acrylate type oligomer was used as gas permeable membrane on top of hydrogel layer. The FET type $pCO_{2}$ sensor fabricated by photolithographic method showed good linearity (linear calibration curve) in the range of $10^{-3}{\sim}10^{0}\;mol/{\ell}$ of dissolved $CO_{2}$ in aqueous solution with high sensitivity.

  • For the purpose of studying on the seepage characteristics of embedded gravel layer in embankment, laboratory model tests were carried out. The embedded layer under embankment was $19{\sim}26mm$ diameter of gravel and those embankment materials were Saemangum dredged sand, river sand and mixed(1:1) sand with dredged and river one. Those permeability coefficients of three different sands are $5.00{\times}10^{-5}$, $3.00{\times}10^{-4}$, $7.50{\times}10^{-5}m/s$, respectively. Seepage characteristics of these results are as follows; 1) The Reynolds number of water flow through embedded gravel layer in three different permeable soils is less then 10, it is laminar flow. 2) These flow velocities through embedded gravel layer in soils are in proportion to these hydraulic gradients, it is Darcy flow. 3) These Darcian permeability coefficients of water flow through embedded gravel layer in soils show as $2.95{\times}10^{-3}$, $1.38{\times}10^{-2}$, $3.33{\times}10^{-3}$m/s, respectively, by varying permeability of embankment soils and embankment lengths. It is approximately 100 times of those permeability coefficients of embankment materials.

  • Hydrogeologic properties of a well field around middle mountainous areas in Pyosun, Jeju volcanic island were examined based on water level monitoring, geologic logging and pumping test data. Due to the alternating basaltic layers with varying permeability in the subsurface, it is difficult to analyze the hydraulic responses to artificial pumping and/or natural precipitation. The least permeable layer, detrital materials with clay, is found at a depth of 200 m below surface, but it is not an upper confining bed for lower main aquifer. Nevertheless, this layer may serve as a natural barrier to vertical percolation and to contaminant migration. Water levels of the production wells are dominantly affected by pumping frequently, while those of the remote observation wells are controlled by ambient precipitation. Results of pumping tests revealed a possible existence of horizontal anisotropy of transmissivity. However, some results of this study include inherent limitations enforced by field conditions such as the consistent of groundwater production and the set of time periods for the cessation of the pumping prior to pumping tests.

  • A SWP method is a revolutionary dewatering method. The conventional dewatering method, deep-well method, had ever occurred a civil appeal caused by the well depletion in compliance with the reduction of the groundwater level over a wider area considerably by the deep-well pumping from homogeneous sand-layer ground for a dry-work, while pump groung excavation working in Sendai city, Japan 10 years ago. it'd developed with the problematic proposal to find the new method which can lower the groundwater level only within the sheet pile without any reduction of groundwater outside of the sheet pile and until currently steady improvement came. It's been confirmed with plenty of executional results that there was almost no decreasing of water-level from surroundings, over so many construction-sites including vertical shafts which completely does not enter into non-water permeable layer and pumping ground etc. The SWP method in this time has been introducing initially and carried into a the execution tentatively at a construction-site and made a various result get through the execution.

  • A triple-layered $PMMA/Ni_{64}Zr_{36}/PDMS$ hydrogen gas sensor using hydrogen permeable alloy and flexible polymer layers is fabricated through spin coating and DC-magnetron sputtering. PDMS(polydimethylsiloxane) is used as a flexible substrate and PMMA(polymethylmethacrylate) thin film is deposited onto the $Ni_{64}Zr_{36}$ alloy layer to give a high hydrogen-selectivity to the sensor. The measured hydrogen sensing ability and response time of the fabricated sensor at high hydrogen concentration of 99.9 % show a 20 % change in electrical resistance, which is superior to conventional Pd-based hydrogen sensors, which are difficult to use in high hydrogen concentration environments. At a hydrogen concentration of 5 %, the resistance of electricity is about 1.4 %, which is an electrical resistance similar to that of the $Pd_{77}Ag_{23}$ sensor. Despite using low cost $Ni_{64}Zr_{36}$ alloy as the main sensing element, performance similar to that of existing Pd sensors is obtained in a highly concentrated hydrogen atmosphere. By improving the sensitivity of the hydrogen detection through optimization including of the thickness of each layer and the composition of Ni-Zr alloy thin film, the proposed Ni-Zr-based hydrogen sensor can replace Pd-based hydrogen sensors.

  • We have previously described a new multilayer alginate microcapsule system, and the goals of the present study were to assess the in vitro function of islets encapsulated in its inner layer, and the angiogenic ability of FGF-1 delivered from the external layer in an omentum pouch. Following isolation and culture, islets were encapsulated in the inner core of microspheres ($500-600{\mu}m$ in diameter) with a semi-permeable poly-L-ornithine (PLO) membrane separating two alginate layers, and both unencapsulated and encapsulated islet function was assessed by a dynamic glucose perifusion. For angiogenesis experiments, one group of microcapsules without FGF-1 (control) and another (test) containing FGF-1 with heparin encapsulated in the external layer were made. One hundred microcapsules of each group were transplanted in Lewis rats (n = 5/group) and were retrieved after 14 days for assessment of angiogenesis. Glucose perifusion of unencapsulated and encapsulated islets resulted in similar stimulation indices. The release of FGF-1 resulted in increased vascular density compared to controls. In conclusion, islets encapsulated in the core of multilayer alginate microcapsules maintain functionality and the microcapsule's external layer is effective in delivery of FGF-1 to enhance graft neovascularization in a retrievable omentum pouch.
