Structure of the skin in amphibious fish, Periophthalmus modestus, was described in relation to cutaneous respiration. The epidermis has no gland cell. The epidermis consists of three regions: outermost layer of one to five layers of flattened epithelial cells, middle layer of swollen epithelial cells instead of glandular cells and stratum germinativum of cuboidal cells. There are numerous blood capillaries in the outermost layer of the epidermis and diffusion distance between the blood of capillaries and the epidermis is about 1.4 Um. The middle layer of the epidermis appears to be a web-like structure due to the swollen epithelial cells. The stratum germinativum has a well-developed lymphatic space containing lymphocytes. There are numerous blood capillaries and elliptical area with acid mucopolysaccharides in stratum laxum of the dermis. The skin of Periophthalmus modestus may be an accessory respiratory organ for oxygen uptake during terrestrial or aquatic life.

The epidermis of the mudskipper, Periophthalmus modestus, consists of three layers- the outermost layer, middle layer and stratum germinativum. Extensive fine blood capillaries are present near the superficial layer of epidermis and outermost layer in five fins and a sucking disc. The diffusion distance between the vascular capillaries and the surface of epidermis ranged from 3.6 to 10.9${\mu}$m: 3.6 ${\mu}$m in the sucking disc, 10.9 ${\mu}$m in the anal fin and 4.6 to 5.0 ${\mu}$m in the two dorsal fins. Rate of the surface area of respiratory epithelium, the surface area of the fine blood capillaries occupied per surface area of epidermis in 0.1mm, is 3.7 to 4.4% in two dorsal fins and 1.1% in the anal fin. The middle layer is simpler in structure consisting of small or voluminous cells swollen by epidermal cells, and this layer appeared web-like. Well-developed lymphatic spaces containing lymphocytes existed in the stratum germinativum. The five fins and sucking disc had no epidermal glands.

The maturation and spawning of Shuttles hoppfish Periophthalmus modestus were studied from April to October, 2005 in the mud flat of Suncheon Bay, Korea. The specimens ranged in body length (BL) from 1.5 to 8.4 cm. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females was highest in May and decreased until September. The hepatosomatic index (HSI) and fatness index of females were high in April and then decreased to a nadir in July. The data indicate that the spawning season was from April to September. There was no significant difference in the ratio of females to males $(X^2-test,\;p>0.01)$. Over 50% of the females over 5 cm in BL were sexually mature. Fecundity ranged from 1,664 to 13,428. The relationship between fecundity (F) and body length (BL) of the fish was expressed as $F=0.026BL^{2.8638}\;(R^2=0.79)$. The first spawning length was 4.5 cm BL.
The taxonomic revision of the genus Periophthalmus from Korea was made based on the fish specimens collected in the southern and western coasts of Korea from September 1983 to October 1994. The genus Periophthalmus in Korea was classified into two species : P. modestus and P. magnuspinnatus n. sp. P. magnuspinnatus differs from all other species of the genus by ventral fin united about two - third the fin and first dorsal fin relatively large, convex, distinct black submarginal band.
Reproductive cycle with the gonad developmental phases, first sexual maturity, spawning frequency, sex ratio of the dusky mud hopper, Periophthalmus modestus were investigated by histological observations. Monthly variations of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) began to increase in May and reached a maximum in June when the gonad was getting mature during the period of higher ground (water) temperature-long day length. Changes in the GSI showed a negative correlation to the HSI, but coincided with the fatness index. The reproductive cycle can be classified into five successive stages: in female, early growing stage (April to May), late growing stage (April to May), mature stage (May to June), ripe and spent stage (June to August), and recovery and resting stage (August to March); in males, growing stage (April to May), mature stage (May to June), ripe and spent stage (June to August), and recovery and resting stage (August to March); According to the frequency distributions of egg diameters during the breeding season, Periophthalmus modestus is presumed to be a summer breeder, asynchronous group and polycyclic species to spawn 2 times or more during the spawning season. Total eggs and mature eggs in absolute fecundity and relative fecundity (per cm) increased with the increase of body length. Total eggs and mature eggs in absolute fecundity and relative fecundity (per g) did not increase with the increase of body weight. Percentages of first sexual maturity of females and males ranging from 5.1 to 5.5 cm in body length are over 50%, and 100% for fish over 7.1 cm in body length. The sex ratios of females to males over 5.1 cm in body length were not significantly different from a 1 : 1 sex ratio.

Modified organs for air respiration in Korean fish was reviewed in the following 6 Korean fishes: three mudskippers (Boleophthalmus pectinirostris, Periophthalmus modestus and P. magnuspinnatus), two mud loaches (Misgurnus mizolepis and M. anguillicaudatus), and a torrent catfish (Liobagrus mediadiposalis). Three mudskippers and a torrent catfish have a modified epidermis to in order to make up for the deficient oxygen supply. Their epidermis has abundant intraepithelial blood capillaries except dermal capillaries situated just beneath the stratum germinativum of the epidermis in B. pectinirostris. The epidermis was thick due to component of the following cells: two kinds of glands as a small mucous cells and a large club cells in L. mediadiposalis, voluminous cells (swollen cells) swollen by epidermal cells and a small mucous cells in B. pectinirostris, and only voluminous cells having no any glandular cells in P. modestus and P. magnuspinnatus. In Particular, the epidermis of the mudskippers appears to be a web-like structure due to the swollen epithelial cells. The dermal bulges are found in B. pectinirostris and they are situated at the skin covering the body, not appendage of all the fins and the sucking disc. Another modified organ in M. mizolepis and M. anguillicaudatus occurs in intestine and its mucosal epithelium has abundant blood capillaries.

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is a strong causative agent for high mortality in cultured and wild shrimps. From this study, the WSSV prevalence in marine organisms around shrimp farm as well as live feed-mediated transmission of WSSV to farmed shrimps were investigated. Based on nested-PCR method, WSSV was detected in wide array of marine organisms including Perinereis aibuhitensis (81.3% of prevalence rate, 13/16), Enedrias fangi (100%, 16/16), Ruditapes philippinarum (20%, 2/10), crab larvae (100%, 10/10), copepoda (30%, 3/10), Periophthalmus modestus (50%, 5/10), Pachygrapsus crassipes (10%, 1/10), Helice tridens (20%, 2/10) and Neomysis sp. (70%, 7/10). On the other hand, WSSV was not detected in Bullacta exarata, Uca arcuata, and Reishia clavigera. The percent prevalence of WSSV in wild shrimps, Fenneropenaeus chinensis was only 6%, but markedly increased up to 56% after a feeding trial using polychaete worms for one month, indicating that the live feed is one of significant carriers of WSSV to shrimps under practical farming conditions.
Fish fauna of fishes collected from the Saemankum area in the west coast of Chollabuk-do was studied from October 1996 to April 1999. The specimens collected from the five sites in this area were identified into 107 species belonging to 83 genera and 52 families. Of them the largest group of fishes was order Perciformes, comprising 50 species and 21 families, and showed 46.7% in total numbers of species. Next larger groups were orders Scorpaeniformes and Pleuronectiformes containing 16 and 14 species respectively. In this area, the group comprising a lots of species was the family Gobiidae taking 13 species, and next groups were the families of Sciaenidae (6 species), Engraulidae (5 species) and Pleulonectidae (5 species). The dominant species was Engraulis japonicus which is 23.4 % in total indiyidual numbers, and subdominant species was Thryssa kummazensis which is 18.5%. The important species economically in the Saemankum area were Anguilla japonica, E. japonicus, T. kummalensis, Konosirus punctatus, Sardinella zunasi, Mugil cephalus, Argyrosomus argentatus, Pseudosciaena polyactis, Collichthys lucidus, Paralichthys olivuceus and Cynoglossus joyneri. The species of high frequency in this area from February to June every year were Anguilla japonica, E. japonicus, T. kammalensis, K. punctatus, S. zunasi, Coilia nasus, Syngnatuus schlegeli, P. polyactis, C. lucidus and Pholis fangi. Ophichthus rotundus, Repomucenus leucopoecitus and R. koreanus were Korean endemic species in the west coast of Chollabuk-do. On the other hand, Boleophthalmus pectinirostris was not found during this study, and Periophthalmus modertus, Tridentiger barbatus and Lophogobius ocellioauda sharply decreased in individual numbers in comparison to several years ago.
