This research explores the application of the bootstrap methods to the construction of control limits for the x charts and the EWMA charts based on single observations with stationary autoregressive processes. The subsample means-based control chars in the presence autocorrelation are also considered. We use a technique for inferring confidence intervals using bootstrap, the percentile method. Simulation studies are conducted to compare the performance of the bootstrap method and that of standard method for constructing control charts under several conditions.

The efficiency and robustness of the scale estimator based on the Gini's mean difference are well known in Nam et al.(2000). In this paper we propose use of robust control limits based on the Gini's mean difference for the control of the process deviation. To compare the performances of the proposed control chart with the existing R-chart or S-chart, some Monte Carlo simulations are performed. The simulation results show that the use of the Gini's mean difference in construction of the control limits has good performance.

This paper focuses on providing a practical approach for decision making in Performance-Based Design (PBD). Satisfactory performance is defined by several performance objectives that place limits on direct (monetary) loss and on a tolerable probability of collapse. No specific limits are placed on conventional engineering parameters such as forces or deformations, although it is assumed that sound capacity design principles are followed in the design process. The proposed design procedure incorporates different performance objectives up front, before the structural system is created, and assists engineers in making informed decisions on the choice of an effective structural system and its stiffness (period), base shear strength, and other important global structural parameters. The tools needed to implement this design process are (1) hazard curves for a specific ground motion intensity measure, (2) mean loss curves for structural and nonstructural subsystems, (3) structural response curves that relate, for different structural systems, a ground motion intensity measure to the engineering demand parameter (e.g., interstory drift or floor acceleration) on which the subsystem loss depends, and (4) collapse fragility curves. Since the proposed procedure facilitates decision making in the conceptual design process, it is referred to as a Design Decision Support System, DDSS. Implementation of the DDSS is illustrated in an example to demonstrate its practicality.

During the start-up of a process or in a job-shop environment conventional use of control charts may lead to erroneous results due to the limited number of subgroups used for the construction of control limits. This article considers the effect of using estimated control limits based on a limited number of subgroups. Especially we investigate the performance of $\overline{X}$ and R control charts when the data are independent, and X control chart when the data are serially correlated in terms of average run length(ARL) and standard deviation run length(SDRL) using simulation. It is found that the ARL and SDRL get larger as the number of subgroups used for the construction of the chart becomes smaller.
Tubular construction is widely used in a range of civil and structural engineering applications. To date, the principal product range has comprised square, rectangular and circular hollow sections. However, hot-rolled structural steel elliptical hollow sections have been recently introduced and offer further choice to engineers and architects. Currently though, a lack of fundamental structural performance data and verified structural design guidance is inhibiting uptake. Of fundamental importance to structural metallic design is the concept of cross-section classification. This paper proposes slenderness parameters and a system of cross-section classification limits for elliptical hollow sections, developed on the basis of laboratory tests and numerical simulations. Four classes of cross-sections, namely Class 1 to 4 have been defined with limiting slenderness values. For the special case of elliptical hollow sections with an aspect ratio of unity, consistency with the slenderness limits for circular hollow sections in Eurocode 3 has been achieved. The proposed system of cross-section classification underpins the development of further design guidance for elliptical hollow sections.

Statistical Process Control(SPC) which uses control charts is widely used to inspect and improve manufacturing process as a effective method. A parametric method is the most common in statistical process control. Shewhart chart was made under the assumption that measurements are independent and normal distribution. In practice, this assumption is often excluded, for example, in case of (equation omitted) chart, when the subgroup sample is small or correlation, it happens that measured data have bias or rejection of the normality test. A bootstrap method can be used in such a situation, which is calculated by resampling procedure without pre-distribution assumption. In this study, applying bootstrap percentile method to (equation omitted) chart, it is compared and evaluated standard process control limit with bootstrap percentile control limit. Also, under the normal and non-normal distributions, where parameter is 0.5, using computer simulation, it is compared standard parametric with bootstrap method which is used to decide process control limits in process quality.

In the present study, a total of 275 tested specimens (149 of non-seismically designed and 126 of seismically designed) for reinforced concrete bridge piers with circular section have been investigated in order to suggest drift limits probabilistically according to damage states in seismic fragility analysis. Thus, quantitative damage states of the piers have been evaluated depending on details of the piers. Nonlinear time-history analyses have been conducted for a damaged bridge in terms of using the suggested drift limits. Then, seismic fragility analysis for a reinforced concrete bridge structure has been conducted using both suggested and existing drift limits. Comparative analyses have revealed that median values by the suggested limits is smaller than those by the existing limits. This implies that seismic performance of the structure can be overestimated when the existing limits are used.
Since Duncan(1956) first proposed an economic design of $\bar{X}$-control charts, most of the succeeding works on economic design of control charts assumed the exponential failure model like Duncan. Hu(1984), however, assumed a more versatile Weibull failure model to develop an economic design of $\bar{X}$-control charts and Banerjee and Rahim(1988) further improved Hu's design by changing the assumption of fixed-length sampling intervals to variable-length ones. In this article we follow the approach of Banerjee and Rahim(1988) but include a pair of warning limits inside the control limits in order to search for a failure without stopping the process when the sample mean falls between warning and control limits. The computational results indicate that the proposed model gives a lower cost than Banerjee and Rahim's model unless the early failure probability of a Weibull distribution is relatively large. The reduction in cost is shown to become larger as the cost of production loss outweighs the cost of searches for a failure.

Extinction limits and combustion temperatures in heat-recirculating excess enthalpy reactors employing both gas-phase and catalytic reaction have been examined previously, with and emphasis Reynolds number (Re) effects and possible application to microscale combustion devices. However, Re is not the only parameter needed to characterize reactor operation. In particular, the use of a fixed reactor size implies that residence time and Re cannot be adjusted independently. To remedy this situation, in this work geometrically similar reactors of different physical sizes were tested with the aim of independently determining the effects of Re and Da. It is found that the difference between catalytic and non-catalytic combustion limits narrow as scale decreases. Moreover, to assess the importance of wall thermal conductivity, reactors of varying wall thickness were studied. From these results the effect of scale on microscale reactor performance and implications for practical microcombustion devices are discussed.
It is well known that the controller output limits have a signifiant effect on the closed loop system performance. Considering the input constraints in GPCF, an effective selection method of the control weighting(.gamma.) is proposed to reduce the amplitude and the rate of control signals so that control signals lie within the limits. It is based on the relation between control weighting(.gamma.) and optimal solution of the unconstrained GPCF. The GPCFIC algorithm chooses an .gamma. at each sampling time so that all unconstrained GPCF output over the control horizon satisfy the rate and the amplitude constraints. In order to evaluate the performance of the GPCFIC, the computer simulations have been done for level control of PWR steam generator in low power operation and shown satisfactory results.
