Purpose: Accelerated degradation tests can speed time to market and reduce the test time and costs associated with long term reliability tests to verify the required service life of a product or material. This paper proposes a service life prediction method for components or materials using an accelerated degradation tests based on the relationships between temperature and the rate of failure-causing chemical reaction. Methods: The relationship between performance degradation and the rate of a failure-causing chemical reaction is assumed and least square estimation is used to estimate model parameters from the degradation model. Results: Methods of obtaining acceleration factors and predicting service life using the degradation model are presented and a numerical example is provided. Conclusion: Service life prediction of a component or material is possible at an early stage of the degradation test by using the proposed method.
This study analyzed the variations in the performance and operation of a 200 kW class micro gas turbine according to performance degradation of compressor and turbine. An in-house code, developed by the present authors and presented in the first part of these series of papers, were used for the analysis. The degradation of compressor and turbine were simulated by modifications in the their performance maps: mass flow rate, pressure ratio and efficiency were decreased from the reference values. Firstly, the variations in the operating conditions (air flow rate, pressure ratio) were predicted for the full load condition. Then, the same analysis were performed for a wide partial load operating range. The change in engine's performance (power output and efficiency) due to the component degradation was predicted. In addition, the change in the compressor surge margin, which is an important indicator for safe engine operation, was evaluated.
This paper investigated wind turbine degradation quantitatively by analyzing the short-term operation records of the Shinan Wind Power Plant. Instead of a capacity factor which is needed to be normalized its variability due to monthly wind speed change, this study suggests an analysis method by taking the difference between the theoretical power output calculated from the nacelle wind speed and actual power output as the quantitative index of performance degradation. For three-year SCADA data analysis of the Shinan Wind Power Plant, it was confirmed that power output degradation rate of 0.54% per year. This value is within the average reduction rate 0.4%/year~0.9%/year of normalized capacity factor of the onshore wind power plants in U.K. and Denmark; however, lower than the rate 2%/year of Canadian wind power plants.
Phase noise of oscillator gives the performance degradation significantly when a high carrier frequency and low transmission rate are used. The BER(Bit Error Rates) degradation of QPSK(Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) transmission is analyzed with the oscillator phase noise level specified in downstream physical interface of LMDS(Local Multipoint Distribution Services) which is described in DAVIC(Digital Audio Visual Council). The model used for the phase noise is a power-law model. We also investigated the effects of the various transmission rates on system performance. For the transmission rate below 0.5 Mbps, the BER performance is severely degraded and we verified that the transmission rate, 20 Mbps, is adequate for the downstream of LMDS systems.
Operating performance of industrial gas turbines in combined cycle power plants depends upon atmospheric conditions. Compressor fouling caused by airborne particles in the atmosphere and their adhesions on compressor blades is one of critical phenomena related to the performance degradation of industrial gas turbines. Compressor fouling provokes increase of pressure loss in inlet duct, decrease of mass flow rate of intake air and decrease of compressor stage efficiency. In this study, impacts of compressor fouling on the performance of an industrial gas turbine operating at design point condition are investigated analytically. As results, it is found that the reduction of produced power with decreased mass flow rate of intake air caused by narrowed flow area by the adhesion of airborne particles on compressor blades is the most dominant impact on the gas turbine performance by the compressor fouling phenomena.

Performance degradation of a battery in 20 kWh energy storage system (ESS) under various operating conditions was studied. And energy saving of the ESS was also monitored by connecting with 20 kW photovoltaic (PV). PV-connected ESS saved 5~7% of energy consumption in 2013 compared to that without such system in 2012. As charge-discharge cycle increased, capacity decreased and the performance degradation was glaringly obvious after 40 cycles. And as charge and discharge rate increased, the performance degradation was more serious. After 50 charge-discharge cycles, a lot of degraded product was deposited on the surface of anode and cathode electrodes, and the cathode side was more contaminated. Therefore, in order to maintain the cell performance, it was more important to protect the degradation of the cathode side.

Effect of temperature on membrane degradation in PEMFCs was studied. After cell operation at different temperatures($60{\sim}90^{\circ}C$) under accelerating degradation conditions(OCV, anode dry, cathode RH 65%) for 144 h, cell performance decreased from 12 to 35%. The results of FER in effluent water showed that this decrease in cell performance was caused by membrane degradation by the attack of $H_2O_2$ or oxygen radicals(${\cdot}OH$, $HO_2{\cdot}$) and that resulted in increase in gas crossover for radical formation. Radical formation on the electrode was confirmed by ESR. Activation energy of 66.2 kJ/mol was obtained by Arrhenius plot used to analyze the effect of temperature on membrane degradation. Increase of cell temperature enhanced gas crossover rate, radical formation rate and membrane degradation rate.
In this paper a method for compensating for thp performance degradation or automatic speech recognition (ASR) is proposed. which is mainly caused by speaking rate variation. Before the new method is proposed. quantitative analysis of the performance of an HMM-based ASR system according to speaking rate is first performed. From this analysis, significant performance degradation was often observed in the rapidly speaking speech signals. A quantitative measure is then introduced, which is able to represent speaking rate. Time scale modification (TSM) is employed to compensate the speaking rate difference between input speech signals and training speech signals. Finally, a method for compensating the performance degradation caused by speaking rate variation is proposed, in which TSM is selectively employed according to speaking rate. By the results from the ASR experiments devised for the 10-digits mobile phone number, it is confirmed that the error rate was reduced by 15.5% when the proposed method is applied to the high speaking rate speech signals.
This paper discusses the service life prediction methods for CFRP bar for concrete reinforcement using accelerated degradation tests. The relationship between performance degradation and the rate of a failure-causing chemical reaction is assumed for the temperature accelerated degradation tests. Methods of obtaining acceleration factors and predicting service life of the CFRP bar using the degradation model are presented.
Purpose: The current study analyzed trends in thermal insulation performance with aging, and condensation characteristics caused by the former. Method: Thermal insulation and condensation prevention performance of an architecture were assessed using Temperature Difference Ration Inside, or TDRi. Subjects of this quantitative analysis in thermal insulation performance change due to aging included recently constructed apartments and aged apartments older than 40 years. Time series comparison and analysis were conducted to observed changes in the thermal insulation performance and condensation characteristics. Result: Analysis showed that wall insulation performance degraded with aging regardless of fortified insulating material usage or insulating material type, which caused increased danger of condensation. In addition, when fortified insulating material was installed on the connection between the walls, insulation performance degradation was lower compared to cases in which fortified materials were not used. In all cases from 1 to 10, the rate of thermal insulation performance degradation increased after 20 years of aging.
