Performance based design is a recent evolutionary step in the process of designing fire protection systems. In essence, it is a logical design process resulting in a solution that achieves a specified performance. Sometimes the prescriptive solutions presented in various codes and standards are too expensive or inflexible. Often the solutions do not and enables optimization of a solution for cost and function. In this study, performance based design was carried out to determine the extent of passive fire protection for oil terminal facilities. The results of performance based design were compared with those of prescriptive code based design. Performance based design is not always more economic than prescriptive code based design but provides more reliable and effective design that is fit for the purpose.

Current codes design the buildings based on life safety criteria. In a performance-based design (PBD) approach, decisions are made based on demands, such as target displacement and performance of structure in use. This type of design prevents loss of life but does not limit damages or maintain functionality. As a newly developed method, resilience-based design (RBD) aims to maintain functionality of buildings and provide liveable conditions after strong ground movement. In this paper, the seismic performance of plain and strengthened RC frames (an eight-story and two low-rise) is evaluated. In order to evaluate earthquake performance of the frames, the performance points of the frames are calculated by the capacity spectrum method (CSM) of ATC-40. This method estimates earthquake-induced deformation of an inelastic system using a reduced response spectrum. Finally, the seismic performances of the frames are evaluated and the results are compared with a resilience-based design criterion.

In a very competitive construction business environment there is a need to measure and manage business performance across a wider spectrum of business success criteria. The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and Triple Bottom Line (TBL) reporting concepts are emerging as champions in the race for sustainable business success. The construction business organisations are often judged based on their financial performance as well as wider performance. This paper aims at developing a universally accepted tool for assessing contractors' wider business performance in the construction industry. A prototype of web-based business performance measurement system has been developed to help contractors assess their own performance aimed at uplifting their performance. The consultants/clients can also use the tool to measure contractors' performance in a value-based contractor selection. The system was developed based on the research conducted among 63 senior construction professionals and therefore further research with the participation of a large number of managers across different countries and also an upgrade of the system will be required.

Performance-based seismic design (PBSD) is currently used for retrofitting of older buildings and the design of new buildings. Whereas, application of performance-based design for wind load is still under development. The tendency has been in the codes to increase wind hazard based on recent recorded events. Since tall buildings are highly susceptible to wind load, necessity for developing a framework for performance-based wind design (PBWD) has intensified. Only a few guidelines such as ASCE (2019) provide information on using PBWD as an alternative for code prescriptive wind design. Though wind hazards, performance objectives, analysis techniques, and acceptance criteria are explained, no recommendations are provided for several aspects like how to select a proper level of wind hazard for each target performance criterion. This paper is an attempt to explain current design philosophy for wind and seismic loads and inherent connection between the components of PBSD for development of a framework for PBWD of tall buildings. Recognizing this connection, a framework for PBWD based on limits set for serviceability and strength is also proposed. Also, the potential for carrying out PBWD in line with ASCE 7-16 is investigated and proposed in this paper.
In the performance domain, physical performance is a measure that represents some degree of system, subsystem, component or device success in a continuous sense, as opposed to a classical binomial sense (success or failure). If applicable sensing and monitoring means exist, physical performance can be observed over time, along with explanatory variables or covariables. Performance-based reliability represents the probability that performance will remain satisfactory over a finite period of time or usage cycles in the future when a performance critical limit (which represents an appropriate definition of failure in terms of performance) is set at a fixed level, based on application requirements. In the case of inadequate knowledge of the failure mechanics, this physical based empirical modeling concept along with performance degradation knowledge can serve as an important analysis tool in reliability work in product and process improvement.
China is prone to earthquake disasters, and the higher seismic performance is required by many existing civil buildings. And seismic evaluation and retrofit are effective measures to mitigate seismic hazards. With the development of performance-based seismic design and diverse retrofit technology for buildings, advanced evaluation methods and retrofit strategies are in need. In this paper, we introduced the evolution of seismic performance objectives in China combined with performance-based seismic design. Accordingly, multi-phase evaluation methods and comprehensive seismic capacity assessment are introduced. For buildings with seismic deficiency or higher performance requirements, the retrofit technologies are categorized into three types: component strengthening, system optimization, and passive control. Both engineering property and social property for the retrofit methods are discussed. The traditional seismic retrofit methods usually are costly and disturbing, and for example in Beijing, seismic strengthening costs approx. 1000 RMB/m2 (for 160 USD/m2), for hospital building even more expensive as 5000 RMB/m2(for 790 USD/m2). So cost-efficient and little disturbance methods are promising techniques. In the end, some opinions about the retrofit strategy and schemes category are shared and wish to discuss the situation and future of seismic retrofit in China.
Design codes provide the minimum requirements for the design of code-compliant structures to ensure the safety of the life and property. As for code-exceeding buildings, the requirements for design are not sufficient and the approval of such structures is vague. In mainland China in recent years, a large number of code-exceeding tall buildings, whether their heights exceed the limit for the respective structure type or the extent of irregularity is violated, have been constructed. Performance-based seismic design (PBSD) approach has been highly recommended and become necessary to demonstrate the performance of code-exceeding tall buildings at least equivalent to code intent of safety. This paper proposes the general methodologies of performance-based seismic analysis and design of code-exceeding tall buildings in Mainland China. The PBSD approach proposed here includes selection of performance objectives, determination of design philosophy, establishment of design criteria for structural components and systems consistent with the desirable and transparent performance objectives, and seismic performance analysis and evaluation through extensive numerical analysis or further experimental study if necessary. The seismic analysis and design of 101-story Shanghai World Financial Center Tower is introduced as a typical engineering example where the PBSD approach is followed. The example demonstrates that the PBSD approach is an appropriate way to control efficiently the seismic damage on the structure and ensure the predictable and safe performance.

Smart pig farm which is based on IoT has been widely adopted by many pig farmers. In order to achieve optimal control of smart pig farm, the relation between environmental conditions and performance metric should be characterized. In this study, the relation between multiple environmental conditions including temperature, humidity and various performance metrics, which are daily gain, feed intake, and MSY, is analyzed based on data obtained from 55 real pig farm. Especially, based on preprocessing of data, various regression based machine learning algorithms are considered. Through performance evaluation, we show that the performance can be predicted with high precision, which can improve the efficiency of management.
The development history, the current situation and the future of the performance-based seismic design of building structures in China are presented in this paper. Firstly, the evolution of performance-based seismic design of building structures specified in the Chinese codes for seismic design of buildings of the edition 1974, 1978, 1989, 2001 and 2010 are introduced and compared. Secondly, in two parts, this paper details the provisions of performance-based seismic design in different Chinese codes. The first part is about the "Code for Seismic Design of Buildings" (GB50011) (edition 1989, 2001 and 2010) and "Technical Specification for Concrete Structures of Tall Building", which presents the concepts and methods of performance-based seismic design adopted in Chinese codes; The second part is about "Management Provisions for Seismic Design of Outof-codes High-rise Building Structures" and "Guidelines for Seismic Design of Out-of-codes High-rise Building Structures", which concludes the performance-based seismic design requirements for high-rise building structures over the relevant codes in China. Finally, according to those mentioned above, this paper pointed out the imperfections of current performance-based seismic design in China and proposed the possible direction for further improvement.
One of the major developments in seismic design over the past few decades is the increased emphasis for limit states design now generally termed as Performance Based Engineering. Performance Based Seismic Design (PBSD) uses Displacement Based Design (DBD) methodology wherein structures are designed for a target level of displacement rather than Force Based Design (FBD) methodology where force or strength aspect is being used. Indian codes still follow FBD methodology compared to other modern codes like CalTrans, which follow DBD methodology. Hence in the present study, a detailed review of the two most common design methodologies i.e., FBD and DBD is presented. A critical evaluation of both these methodologies by comparing the seismic performance of bridge models designed using them highlight the importance of adopting DBD techniques in Indian Standards also. The inherent discrepancy associated with FBD in achieving 'seismic regularity' is highlighted by assessing the seismic performance of bridges with varied relative height ratios. The study also encompasses a brief comparison of the seismic design and detailing provisions of IRC 112 (2011), IRC 21 (2000), AASHTO LRFD (2012) and CalTrans (2013) to evaluate the discrepancies on the same in the Indian Standards. Based on the seismic performance evaluation and literature review a need for increasing the minimum longitudinal reinforcement percentage stipulated by IRC 112 (2011) for bridge columns is found necessary.
