Composite Rocket Propellants Based on Thermoplastic Elastomer Binders

  • The objective of this paper is to present new binder systems that can be applied in composite rocket propellants, to improve properties of these propellants not only for better performance, but also to reduce waste and pollution. These novel systems are based on the thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) binders, which consists of copolymers with the addition of a plasticizer, and additives. The effect of the novel TPE binder systems on the burning rate and mechanical properties of AP based propellants was studied. The results show that propellants based on the novel TPE binders have a better energy performance than today's workhorse hydroxyl terminated polybutadine/ammonium perchlorate propellant, exhibit a similar range of burning rate, possess appropriate mechanical properties, and exhibit good processing and aging characteristics at low cost.

Differentiation of Neuroepithelial Progenitor Cells Implanted into Newborn Rat Brain Striatum

  • It has been demonstrated that multipotent neuronal progenitor cells can be isolated from the developing or adult CNS and proliferated in vitro in response to epidermal growth factor. The present study was undertaken to investigate the differentiation of neuronal progenitor cells after transplantation into the neonatal rat forebrain striatum. Primary cultured progenitor cells were labeled with 3,3'-dioctadecycloxacarbonyl- amine perchlorate (DiO). DiO labeled progenitor cells were implanted into neonatal rat striatum. Implanted DiO labeled progenitor cells were differentiated into astrocytes and GABAergic neurons. These results suggest that implanted progenitor cells can be differentiated into neurons in host forebrain striatum. In addition, our data show that DiO labeling is a useful technique for tracing implanted progenitor cells.

Bending Displace Improvement of Electro-active Paper Using Conductive Polyaniline Coating (전도성 폴리아닐린(Polyaniline)을 이용한 전기작동 종이(EAPap)의 굽힘변형 개선)

  • Bi-layer and tri-layer structures of electro-active paper(EAPap) using conductive polyaniline(PANI) coating were investigated to improve bending displacement of cellulose EAPap. Two different counter ions, perchlorate($CIO_4^-$) and tetrafluoroborate($BF_4^-$), are used as dopant ions in the PANI processing. The actuation performances of hi-layer and tri-layer structure are evaluated in terms of tip displacement, blocked force, strain energy density and power output density. The actuation performance of the tri-layer actuator was better than the hi-layer structure, and the maximum displacement and blocked force of tri-layer $CIO_4^-$ doped-PANI-EAPap were 13.2 mm and 0.15 mN, respectively. Also the power output of the actuator is similar to the required power of biological muscle application.

  • The 77 K luminescence and excitation spectra, room-temperature FT-infrared and visible absorption spectra of a newly prepared complex cis-[Cr(cyclam)(pn)]$(ClO_4)_3$, where cyclam and pn represent 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane and 1,2-propanediamine respectively, have been measured. Absorption maximum of the first spin-allowed transition in the electronic absorption spectra of cis-[Cr(cyclam)(pn)]$^{3+}$ and cis-[Cr(cyclam)(en)]$^{3+}$ appears at nearly the same position. The two spin-allowed and six spin-forbidden electronic transitions are assigned from the visible absorption and excitation spectra. It is also shown that the zero phonon line in the excitation spectrum splits into two components by 50 cm$^{-1}$.

Spectroscopic Properties and Ligand Field Analysis of Pentaammine(imidazole)chromium(III) Perchlorate

  • The emission and excitation spectra of [Cr(NH3)5(imH)](ClO4)3·H2O (imH=imidazole) taken at 77 K are reported. The 298 K visible and far-infrared spectra are also measured. The vibrational intervals of the electronic ground state are extracted from the far-infrared and emission spectra. The ten electronic bands due to spin-allowed and spin-forbidden transitions are assigned. Using the observed transitions, a ligand field analysis has been performed to determine the bonding properties of coordinated imidazole in the title chromium(Ⅲ) complex. It is confirmed that nitrogen atom of the imidazole ligand has a medium it-acceptor property toward chromium(Ⅲ) ion. The zero-phonon line in the excitation spectrum splits into two components by 181 cm-1, and the large 2Eg splitting can be reproduced by the ligand field theory.

Syntheses of Mannosidic Disaccharides from Derivatives of Ethylthio $\alpha$-D-Mannopyranoside

  • Derivatives of ethylthio α-D-mannopyranoside as glycosyl donors are compared in coupling efficiency and stercoselectivity with varying thiophilic promoters from methyl triflate (MeOTf), dimethyl(methylthio)sulfonium triflate (DMTST) to iodonium dicollidine perchlorate (IDCP), solvents and glycosyl acceptors. IDCP was the most efficient promoter in coupling of perbenzylated ethylthio-α-D-mannopyranosides (1 and 2), giving α-Dmannosyl disaccharides preferentially, whereas inactive in coupling of 4,6-O-benzylidene derivatives 3 and 4. MeOTf and DMTST promoted coupling of 4,6-O-benzylidene derivatives 3 and 4, but P-D-mannopyranosyl disaccharides were formed preferentially. Coupling reaction was retarded as solvent polarity decreased.

Cation Radicals with 2-Phridylhydrazones in Nitrile Solvents s-Triazolo[4,3-a]pyridines by Thianthrene Cation Radical Perchlorate and 1-(2-Pyridyl)-1,2,4-Triazoles by Tris(2,4-Dibromophenyl)-aminium Hexachloroantimonate

  • Reactions of arenealdehyde 2-pyridylhydrazones (1) with thianthrene cation radical ($Th^{+·}$) and tris(2,4-dibromophenyl)aminium hexachloroantimonate ($Ar_3N^{+·}SbCl_6^-$) were investigated. The major product was switched depending on the cation radical being used. That is, s-triazolo[4,3-α]pyridines (2), an intramolecular cyclization product, and 1-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazoles (3), an intermolecular cycloaddition product, were obtained as a major product when reacted with $Th^{+·}$ and $Ar_3N^{+·}$, respectively in nitrile solvents. The plausible mechanisms are proposed based on both the reduction potentials of $Th^{+·}$ and $Ar_3N^{+·}$ and control experiments.

  • 본 연구는 퍼클로레이트의 생물학적 환원 과정에 있어서 고농도의 염이 미생물에게 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 다양한 방법을 통해서 알아보고 적절한 모델링 접근을 통하여 최적 환원속도를 위한 반응조 조건 및 설계에 필요한 요소들을 도출하기 위해 수행되었다. 100mL 합성폐수를 포함하는 플라스크를 이용한 실험이 수행되었고, 일정 농도의 퍼클로레이트와 유일 탄소원으로 아세트산나트륨이 사용되었다. 염화나트륨 농도가 $7490{\mu}s/cm$에서 $23700{\mu}s/cm$까지 증가하는 동안 퍼클로레이트의 생물학적 환원 속도는 현저하게 감소하였으며, $32100{\mu}s/cm$ 이상의 염화나트륨 농도에서는 퍼클로레이트가 환원되지 않았다. 동일한 농도의 염화나트륨, 염화암모늄, 염산 및 황산이 포함된 하수에서는 퍼클로레이트의 환원속도가 모두 비슷하였다.

  • The AP/HTPB composite propellant is a common choice for solid rocket propulsion. The externally heated rocket via fires, for instance, can cause the energetic substance to ignite, and this may lead to a thermal runaway event marked by a severe explosion. In order to develop preventive measures to reduce the possibility of such accidents in propulsion systems, we investigate the ignition and initiation properties of AP/HTPB propellant.

Quantitative Determination of Acetone formed in the Thermal and Photochemical Decompositions of Azobisisobutyronitrile

  • Cyanoisopropyl radical derived from azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) by either thermolysis or photolysis reacts with oxygen to give cyanoisopropylperoxy radical which then was converted to acetone and cyano radical and/or acetyl cyanide and methyl radical. Of these products, acetone formed was quantitatively determined by the addition of thianthrene cation radical perchlorate to the reaction mixture. The results showed that 55.7 mmol, 16.9 mmol, and 16.0 mmol of acetone were formed for 7 hours from 1 mol of AIBN at $82{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ in acetonitrile, carbon tetrachloride, and benzene, respectively. However, 22.2 mmol of acetone was formed from photolysis of 1 mmol of AIBN in acetonitrile. The value decreased to 13.2 mmol by bubbling argon into the solvent prior to photolysis.
