Pepper powdery mildew causes increasingly economical damage due to increased cultivation of pepper in greenhouses. To assess resistance of pepper resources against pepper powdery mildew, we developed a novel evaluation formula for pepper resistance against powdery mildew. The evaluation formula named S index is as follows; (number of the highest disease leaf/top leaf number)-(number of the lowest disease leaf/top leaf number). Positive correlation (81%, P = 0.01) between S index and authentic disease leaf rate was observed from the pepper plants infected by powdery mildew. Various pepper species from our genetic resources were evaluated to identify pepper varieties conferring resistance against powdery mild using S-index. Capsicum frutescens accessions 3CA131 and C. baccatum accessions 3CA0162, 3CA174, 3CA176 showed high resistance to powdery mildew, but none of C. annuum was resistant. Results suggest that S-index proposed in this study is useful to assess resistance evaluation of powdery mildew in chili pepper breeding.
Yellow spot or blotch symptoms were observed on the upper surface of eggplant (Solanum melongena. cv: Cheonryang) leaves in a commerical vinyl-house of Hapchon-gun, Kyongnam, Korea. We identified Leveillula taurica(L v.) Arnaud as a pathogen causing powdery mildew of eggplant which was observed newly in Korea. The fungal conidia from eggplant leaves were reinoculated to eggplant, tomato and pepper to confirm the same disease as the symptomatology and morphology of the pathogen.
This research was performed to examine the effects of mixed espil and copper hydroxide for powdery mildew prevention on cucumber, tomato and pepper. On prevention effect for powdery mildew on cucumber, results revealed that mixed espil and copper hydroxide with a ratio of 4 : 1, disease incidence rate was 18.9% and prevention effect was 69.9%. Another treatment with a ratio of 8 : 1 showed an disease incidence rate of 18.1% and prevention effect of 71.1%, thus, showed great effectiveness. For powdery mildew on tomato, espil and copper hydroxide were mixed using the ratio 4 : 1, results showed an disease incidence rate of 12.4% and prevention effect of 85.3%. Treatment using the ratio of 8 : 1, results showed an disease incidence rate of 14.3% and prevention effect of 83.0%, thus, showed great effectiveness. For powdery mildew on redpepper, espil and copper hydroxide were mixed using the ratio of 4 : 1 with results showed disease incidence rate of 17.7% and prevention effect of 83.0%. From the results, this treatment is the most effective with the lowest attack rate and highest prevention effect. Deducing from the study, it was found out that using mixed espil and copper hydroxide using the ratios 4 : 1 or 8 : 1 are the most effective method for powdery mildew prevention. Mixed ratio of 4 : 1 or 8 : 1 was most effective for preventing powdery mildew on cucumber and tomato, while the espil and copper hydroxide ratio of 4 : 1 was the most effective method for powdery mildew prevention on pepper.

This study was carried out to develop the economic thresholds for powdery mildew on pepper. To investigate the relationship between powdery mildew incidence degree and yield, experimental plots with ten treatments as initial disease degree were established. Disease intensity exhibited negative and significant correlation with fruit characters like fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit weight. The adverse effect of the disease on these characteristics was low yield, exhibiting significant negative correlation with disease intensity. There existed close correlation between rate of infected leaf area and yields in the plastic house (Chonhatongil: Y = -3.44X+291.09 $R^2=0.73$, Buchon: Y = -2.14X+327.9 $R^2=0.78$). There existed close correlation between rate of infected leaf area and yield loss in the plastic house (Chonhatongil: Y = 2.14X+15.45 $R^2=0.76$$r=0.87^{**}$, Buchon: Y = 3.44X+114.21 $R^2=0.73$$r=0.85^{**}$). Control thresholds diseased rate on powdery mildew of pepper was below 3.2 to 7.3% rate of infected leaf area per plant in the plastic house. The economic thresholds for powdery mildew of pepper was below 3.8 to 6.2% rate of infected leaf area per plant in the plastic house.
Powdery mildew of pepper is one of the most devastating diseases which is occurring all the year under greenhouse condition. In this study, control efficacy against powdery mildew was evaluated by mixed culture solutions of two chitinolytic bacteria, Lysobacter enzymogenenes strain C-3 and Chrornobacterium sp. strain C-61, cultivated in the chitin-supplemented medium. In all experiments, white powder on the reverse side of pepper leaves perfectly disappeared 3 days after application of mixed culture solutions. However, periods required for formation of new white powder on the same sites after application (control-lasting period) were largely differed according to environmental conditions. In particular, the control-lasting period was much longer when sprayed on 6 PM than 9 AM and especially, on rainy days than sunny days. This indicates that control efficacy of culture solution may be largely affected by environmental conditions after application. The undiluted culture solution resulted in a perfect control with control value more than 95% by application of 5-day-intervals under severely diseased field and 7-day-intervals under disease-started field. A ten-fold diluted product also showed control value more than 81% by application of the same method. These results suggest that this culture solution can be practically used to control powdery mildew disease in pepper plants.
This study was conducted to reduce the using amount of chemical fungicides for the control of red-pepper powdery mildew. Effect of combined application of three microbial fungicides and six chemical fungicides for the control of red-pepper powdery mildew was examined in vitro, in pot assay and under field condition. One chemical fungicide (Azoxystrobin+Chlorothalonil) among six chemical fungicides significantly suppressed three microbial fungicides (Bacillus subtilis Y1336, Bacillus subtilis DBB1501, Bacillus subtilis QST-713) registered for the control of pepper powdery mildew in vitro. In the pot assay, two mixed application such as B. subtilis DBB1501+Trifloxystrobin, B. subtilis QST713+Trifloxystrobin among nine mixed applications of three microbial fungicides and three chemical fungicides showed the highest suppressive effect against red pepper powdery mildew. Also, suppressive effect of the mixed application of B. subtilis QST713 and Trifloxystrobin was similar to that of single application of three chemical fungicides(Myclobutanil, Trifloxystrobin, Hexaconazole). In the field test, when the microbial fungicides (B. subtilis DBB1501, B. subtilis QST713) and the chemical fungicide (Trifloxystrobin) for the control of powdery mildew of red pepper were mixed foliar sprayed four times at 7 day-intervals, the control values were in the range of 70.3% to 70.9%. On the other hand, when each of the chemical fungicide (Trifloxystrobin) was foliar sprayed four times at 7 day-intervals, the control value was 72.7%. Consequently, the mixed application of the microbial fungicides and chemical fungicides could be recommended as a one of control measures for reducing the using amount of chemical fungicides.

Pepper powdery mildew, Leveillula taurica is one of the most important pathogens of pepper in the greenhouses and fields in Korea and is becoming a worldwide disease. These experiments were carried out to investigate the optimal germination, disease development conditions, disease incidence and effective inoculation methods of pepper powdery mildew. The incidence of powdery mildew was investigated throughout the country based on the major pepper growing areas in 2009. The average rate of infected leaves ranged from 15.3% to 81.8% in greenhouses and fields. Powdery mildew incidences were more severe in greenhouses than those of fields. The optimal temperature for conidial germination was $25^{\circ}C$ and showed the highest germination at 6 hs after treatment. The range of temperature for germination was $10^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$. Temperature of greater than $30^{\circ}C$ and below $20^{\circ}C$ affected the abnormal germination and germ tube elongation. The optimal relative humidity for germination and germ tube elongation was 85% and germination increased as relative humidity increased. Disease development started 8 days after inoculation and showed the highest disease severity at 15 days in greenhouse and field regardless of varieties. Among three different inoculation methods tested the spore dropping method was better than touching with infected leaves and spraying with spore suspension. However, the method has limitation in mass inoculation due to the amount of time consumed.
In this study, two pepper varieties, PRH1 (powdery mildew resistance line) and Saengryeg (powdery mildew resistance line), were resequenced using next generation sequencing technology in order to develop InDel markers. The genome-wide discovery of InDel variation was performed by comparing the whole-genome resequencing data of two pepper varieties to the Capsicum annuum cv. CM334 reference genome. A total of 334,236 and 318,256 InDels were identified in PRH1 and Saengryeg, respectively. The greatest number of homozygous InDels were discovered on chromosome 1 in PRH1 (24,954) and on chromosome 10 (29,552) in Saengryeg. Among these homozygous InDels, 19,094 and 4,885 InDels were distributed in the genic regions of PRH1 and Saengryeg, respectively, and 198,570 and 183,468 InDels were distributed in the intergenic regions. We have identified 197,821 polymorphic InDels between PRH1 and Saengryeg. A total of 11,697 primers sets were generated, resulting in the discovery of four polymorphic InDel markers. These new markers will be utilized in order to identify disease resistance genotypes in breeding populations. Therefore, our results will make a one-step advancement in whole genome resequencing and add genetic resource datasets in pepper breeding research.

Biological control of important fungal diseases such as Phytophthora blight of red pepper, gary mold rot of vegetables, and powdery mildew of many crops was attempted using an antagonistic bacterium, Bacillus sp. AC-1 in greenhouses and fields. The antagonistic bacterium isolated from the rhizosphere soils of healthy red pepper plant was very effective in the inhibition of mycelial growth of plant pathogenic fungi in vitro including Phytophthora capsici, Rhizoctonia solani, Pyricularia oryzae, Botrytis cinerea, Valsa mali, Fusarium oxysporum, Pythium ultimum, Alternari mali, Helminthosporium oryzae, and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Culture filtrate of antagonistic Bacillus sp. AC-1 applied to pot soils infested with Phytophthora capsici suppressed the disease occurrence better than metalaxyl application did until 37 days after treatment in greenhouse tests. Treatments of the bacterial suspension on red pepper plants also reduced the incidence of Phytophthora blight in greenhouse tests. In farmers' commercial production fields, however, the controlling efficacy of the antagonistic bacteria was variable depending on field locations. Gray mold rot of chinese chives and lettuce caused by Botrytis cinerea was also controlled effectively in field tests by the application of Bacillus sp. AC-1 with control values of 79.7% and 72.8%, respectively. Spraying of the bacterial suspension inhibited development of powdery mildew of many crops such as cucumber, tobacco, melon, and rose effectively in greenhouse and field tests. The control efficacy of the bacterial suspension was almost same as that of Fenarimol used as a chemical standard. Further experiments for developing a commercial product from the antagonistic bacteria and for elucidating antagonistic mechanism against plant pathogenic fungi are in progress.
Chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is an economically important horticultural crop in Korea; however, various diseases, including Phytophthora root rot, anthracnose, powdery mildew, Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV), and Pepper mottle virus (PepMoV), severely affect their productivity and quality. Therefore, pepper varieties with resistance to multiple diseases are highly desired. In this study, we developed 20 SNP type assays for three pepper populations using Fluidigm nanofluidic dynamic arrays. A total of 4,608 data points can be produced with a 192.24 dynamic array consisting of 192 samples and 24 SNP markers. The assays were converted from previously developed sequence-tagged-site (STS) markers and included markers for resistance to Phytophthora root rot (M3-2 and M3-3), anthracnose (CcR9, CA09g12180, CA09g19170, CA12g17210, and CA12g19240), powdery mildew (Ltr4.1-40344, Ltr4.2-56301, and Ltr4.2-585119), bacterial spot (Bs2), CMV (Cmr1-2), PMMoV (L4), and PepMoV (pvr1 and pvr2-123457), as well as for capsaicinoids content (qcap3.1-40134, qcap6.1-299931, qcap6.1-589160, qdhc2.1-1335057, and qdhc2.2-43829). In addition, 11 assays were validated through a comparison with the corresponding data of the STS markers. Furthermore, we successfully applied the assays to commercial $F_1$ cultivars and to our breeding lines. These 20 SNP type assays will be very useful for developing new superior pepper varieties with resistance to multiple diseases and a higher content of capsaicinoids for increased pungency.
