This study was initially performed to investigate current red-pepper drying methods commonly being adopted on red-pepper cultivation farm area. Based on the informations obtained from the field survey, an experiment of red-pepper drying was carried out to verify the actual drying potential of plastic covered solar house similar to the conventional pipe frame greenhouses covered with one or two layer of plastic film. Some results obtained from field survey and drying experiment for red-pepper are summarized as follows; 1. Various patterns of red-pepper drying process were found; 1) complete natural drying with red-pepper exposed in outdoor air, 2) hot air drying by dry chamber only, 3) combination drying by hot air dryer together with plastic covered passive solar house, 4) drying with plastic covered solar house unit. 2. The average air temperatures of outdoor and solar house during drying experiment period were $26.9-30.8\;and\;28.6-33.8^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the maximum air temperatures of those two were $34.2-36.4\;and\;39.8\;-52.3^{\circ}C$, respectively. Horizontal solar intensity during experiment period was $18.49-23.96\;MJ/m^{2}$, and relative humidity of outdoor and experimental solar house were 56 - 66% and 64 - 70%, respectively. 3. The weight of red-pepper during drying experiment period was decreased almost linearly from initial moisture content of 85% to final moisture content of 14%.
To improve the soil properties of physical and microbial community rice bran and wood charcoal were applied in the continuously cultivated plastic film house soil. Soil physical properties were improved by application of rice bran and charcoal compared to chemical fertilizer application (control) by 8~14% in bulk density and 5~9% in soil porosity. Changes in the biological ratio indexes of fatty acids in the soils were detected depending on the inputted materials. Especially in application of rice bran including mixture with charcoal, much more fungi and less bacteria were detected and the ratio of fungi to bacteria was increased, suggesting the more organic carbon metabolically active in these treatments. The high ratio of aerobe to anaerobe suggested the better aerobic conditions were in the soil inputted wood charcoal. From these results, it is important and possible to select some materials for the organic pepper cultivation, which may improve the poor condition soil.

During the growth of fruit vegetables such as pepper, cucumber and tomato, there are light deficiency under the plant canopy. This study was conducted to clarify the effect of light diffusion film on the stem growth, canopy, flowering and fruiting of green pepper in greenhouse. The transmittance of total solar radiation into greenhouse under woven and double films were 90% and 75% of polyethylene film. And the transmittance of photosynthetically active radiation into greenhouse under woven and double films were 96% and 81% of polyethylene film. However, the light diffusions under woven, double and polyethylene films were 46%, 31% and 9%, respectively. The plant height under polyethylene film covered greenhouse was 96.9% cm, taller than those under woven and double films by 6.5, 13.9 cm. And the third node length under woven film covered greenhouse was 8.6 cm, shorter than those under double and polyethylene films by 2.5, 5.7 cm. Also the first branch angle under woven film covered greenhouse was 61.0$^{\circ}$, larger than those under double and polyethylene films by 2.3, 10.3$^{\circ}$. But there was no clear difference in the node numbers among the covering materials. The rate of curved and sterile fruit under woven film covered greenhouse was smaller than those under double and polyethylene films by 4.6, 5.5% and 1.2, 3.6%. But the contents of vitamin C showed no difference among the covering materials and plant densities.
A corynespora leaf spot of pepper, which has not been reported previously in Korea, occurred severely at the major pepper cultivation area of Chinju, Gyeongnam province in 2001. Infection rate ranged from 48.2 to 84.7% in eight fields surveyed. The causal fungus was identified as Corynespora cassicola based on the following cultural and morphological characteristics. The fungi grew well on potato dextrose agar, showing gray to brown color with cultural age. Conidia formed solitary or catenary were obclavate to cylindrical in shape, and pale olivaceous brown or brown in color. They had 420 pseudoseptate and isthmus, and measured 42.7-197.6 x 9.3-$23.5\mu\textrm{m}$. Septate conidiophores were pale to light brown in color, and measured 116.5-836.0 x 4.2-$11.0\mu\textrm{m}$. Conidia germinated as a bi-polar type. Optimal temperature for mycelial growth and conidial germination was $30^{\circ}$ and 25-$30^{\circ}$, respectively. The fungus showed strong pathogenicity to pepper plant, and the symtoms on pepper by the artificial inoculation were similar to those observed in the field. This is the first report on the corynespora leaf spot on pepper (Capsium annuum) caused by Corynespora cassicola in Korea.

The disease occurrence on red-pepper plants in relation to cultivation methods of the farmers and to the precipitation was investigated in northern Kyungbuk Province. The major diseases were mosaic, anthracnose and Phytophthora blight in 2007 and 2008. In 2008, mosaic was more severe than that in 2007, but the other diseases were milder than those in 2007. A negative correlation between the mosaic incidence in the harvesting season and the precipitation during May was recognized. On the other hand, there was a positive correlation between the severity of Phytophthora blight in September and the precipitation during August. The occurrence of anthracnose, Phytophthora blight and mosaic in the surveyed pepper plants grown in plastic houses were milder than those in fields, although the farmers cultivating red-pepper plants in the plastic houses were less than 5% in the northern Kyungbuk Province.
Two trial products of monogranular compound fertilizer for red pepper under vinyl mulching cultivatin were made using the principal sources of urea, diammonium phosphate and muriate of potash in combination with fillers of treated human wastes (product I) and zeolite (Product II). A field experiment was carried out to evaluate their effects on red pepper and the results obtained were as follows. Red pepper plant growth and total red fruit yields in the trial products of one time basal application were better and higher than those of NPK split application of contrl plot. The increases of yield in the trial products might be due to steady supply of nutrients for the entire growing period. Therefore, one time basal dressing of a developed monogranular compound fertilizer for red pepper was applicable under vinyl mulching cultivation.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of closed cultivation and open cultivation method and substrate type on the nutrient ion change pattern and growth of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) 'Scirocco' according to the reuse of drainage in hydroponics. The sowing, transplanting, and application of the closed and open cultivation method were carried out on August 19 and September 16, and October 21, 2021, respectively. As a result of the analysis of nutrients in the drainage, Na+ and Cl- are representative ions that crops do not absorb properly, and as the growth progresses, they are accumulated in the closed method. In addition, since the content of NH4-N in the drainage is significantly lower than that of NO3-N, it is thought that NH4-N is preferentially absorbed rather than NO3-N due to the ion selectivity of sweet pepper. The growth and fruit characteristics of sweet pepper did not differ significantly between treatments according to the drainage reuse and the type of substrate. In conclusion, if you take care of poor fruiting due to the weakening of power after the middle period in hydroponic cultivation of sweet pepper according to the cultivation method of closed and open, and the substrate type of coir and rock wool, the difference between treatments is not large, so the sweet pepper can be produced by selecting the cultivation methods and substrate types suitable for the conditions of grower. However, as interest in environmental pollution has recently increased, it is judged that there is no need to worry about a decrease in quantity or quality, even if a closed cultivation method is adopted under the assumption that pathogen infection due to drainage reuse is well managed. It is expected that if coir is applied instead of rock wool, which causes a problem of disposal, it will further contribute to the reduction of environmental pollution.

In 2000, domestic protected cultivation area was about 52,189 ha including 13,621 ha of heating greenhouses. Recently, heating cost accounts for 25 to 30% of total production cost which has been increased due to the rise of oil price, while the heating cost was about 15% in other advanced countries. To reduce the heating energy cost, the study of minimizing the heating space of greenhouse have been conducted from 1998 to 1999. The system was developed to control the heating space according to crop growth by moving horizontal curtain up and down. Installation of the heating space-control curtain in greenhouse decreased heating capacity to 264 m$^3$compared to 661.5 m$^3$in the traditional curtain, and consumpted fuel was saved about 56% point in semiforcing culture and 28% point in retarding culture of pepper. In addition, uniform distribution of air temperature and relative humidity in greenhouse environment resulted in earlier flowering and higher yields in hot pepper.
To get the basic information for the improvement of the optimum levels of upland soil fertility and fertilizer application, the soil samples in two hundred fifteen site were collected from the major condiment vegetable cultivation areas such as red pepper, garlic and onion fields. Physico-chemical properties of the soil samples were investigated. Soil texture distribution of soil samples in red pepper, garlic and onion cultivation areas was in order of loam (L), sandy loam (SL), silt loam (SiL) and clay loam (CL) (35.4, 31.6, 14.9 and 7.0%, respectively). The average pH of soil in garlic and onion cultivation areas were over pH 6.0, whereas in red pepper was under pH 5.5. The frequency distribution of soil pH in total sampling sites were 58.7% in under pH 6.0 and 21.4% in below pH 5.0, in contrast to 10.3% in over pH 7.0. The organic matter contents were in the range of $20{\sim}30g\;kg^{-1}$, and the onion field soils was a little higher than those in red pepper or garlic. The available phosphate contents were in the range of $719{\sim}746mg\;kg^{-1}$ and were not different among in red pepper, garlic and onion. The frequency distribution of available phosphate in total sampling sites were found 62.8% of above $600mg\;kg^{-1}$, which was over the standard level for upland soil improvement, and then 22.3% was exceeded $1,000mg\;kg^{-1}$, especially. In the exchangeable cations, the K and Ca contents in garlic (1.27 and $9.11cmol\;kg^{-1}$) and onion (1.20 and $8.39cmol\;kg^{-1}$) were higher than in red pepper (0.96 and $5.87cmol\;kg^{-1}$), respectively. The Mg contents in garlic field soils ($2.17cmol\;kg^{-1}$) were higher than those in red pepper and onion (1.51 and $1.80cmol\;kg^{-1}$). This exchangeable K, Ca and Mg contents were higher than the standard level for upland soil improvement. The contents of microelement were ranged in $54.3{\sim}60.1mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Fe, $31.3{\sim}42.3mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Mn, $1.7{\sim}2.3mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Cu and $4.8{\sim}5.5mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Zn, respectively.
The amount of irrigation water can be calculated based on the irrigation schedule in irrigation manual. At present, the maximum irrigation manual, which was developed in 1999 for the maximum yield with maxmum irrigation, is using. Now the water saving irrigation manual for red pepper, without decrease of crop yield, has been developded in 45 areas of korea. Among 45 regions, 9 regions which were selected respectively from 9 Provinces of Korea, were used for this study. The water saving irrigation manual has been used easily without soil sampling and measurement of soil water status. The objective of this study is to assess the possibility of the saving of irrigation water compared to the maximum irrigation manual. The average potential evapo-transpiration (PET) during 30 years in 9 region for the red pepper cultivation was a $2.69mm\;day^{-1}$. The saving amount of irrigation water for red pepper cultivation by saving irrigation manual compared to the maximum irrigation manual in a year was 309.4 mm, 303.3 mm and 309.5 mm in the soil of Sandy Loam (SL), Loam (L) and Silty Loam (SiL), respectively. The average saving amount of irrigation water for red pepper cultivation by saving irrigation manual compared to the maximum irrigation manual in a year was 307.4 mm.
