  • A fully-integrated penta-band reconfigurable power amplifier (PA) is developed for handset Tx applications. The output structure of the proposed PA is composed of the fixed output matching network, power and frequency reconfigurable networks, and post-PA distribution switches. In this work, a new reconfiguration technique is proposed for a specific band requiring power and frequency reconfiguration simultaneously. The design parameters for the proposed reconfiguration are newly derived and applied to the PA. To reduce the module size, the switches of reconfigurable output networks and post-PA switches are integrated into a single IC using a $0.18{\mu}m$ silicon-on-insulator CMOS process, and a compact size of $5mm{\times}5mm$ is thus achieved. The fabricated W-CDMA PA module shows adjacent channel leakage ratios better than -39 dBc up to the rated linear power and power-added efficiencies of higher than around 38% at the maximum linear output power over all the bands. Efficiency degradation is limited to 2.5% to 3% compared to the single-band reference PA.

  • The novel internal monopole chip antenna of penta-band operation for GSM850/GSM900/DCS/USPCS/WCDMA bands for mobile phones is proposed. This antenna occupies a small volume $8\times3.2\times20mm^3$ and is suitable to be embedded in a mobile phone as an internal antenna. The minimization of the proposed antenna was realized by using spiral line structure and meander line structure on FR-4 of dielectric$(\varepsilon_r=4.4)$. The designed antenna has the wide-band operation in the upper band by overlapping high order resonances. The measured bandwidth of this antenna (VSWR>3) is 150MHz$(1,030\sim1,180\;MHz)$ in the lower band operation and 650 MHz$(1,760\sim2,410\;MHz)$ in higher band operation. The measured radiation efficiency within bandwidth(VSWR 3:1) is over 50 %. The antenna has been designed by a commercial software HFSS.

  • In this paper, the microstrip antenna for penta-band service is proposed. It is designed for a wide band characteristic based on a monopole line combined with a triangular patch structure which has two slits. Total antenna size is $35\;mm{\times}20\;mm$ and it was fabricated on FR-4 substrate($\varepsilon_r=4.4$) which has $35\;mm{\times}75\;mm{\times}1\;mm$ size and a microstrip line with impedance 50 ohm is used. Experimental result shows the impedance bandwidth($VSWR{\leq}3$) of the proposed antenna operated within GSM/DCS/USPCS/UMTS/Bluetooth frequency band. The resonance frequency of the proposed antenna is 0.92, 1.97, 2.45 GHz and the average gain is -2.18, -0.66, -0.58 dBi. Also, the radiation efficiency is 60, 85, 87%. The fabricated antenna is satisfied with the aimed impedance bandwidth ($VSWR{\leq}3$) in GSM/DCS/ USPCS/UMTS/Bluetooth frequency band.

  • In this paper, the small loop antenna with a parasitic loop structure for penta-band mobile phone application is proposed. This antenna is composed of a feed monopole, a radiating loop antenna with a parasitic loop structure and an additional radiating element. The antenna is printed on the very thin flexible substrate to mount on the dielectric carrier with a volume of 40 mm$\times$11 mm$\times$3 mm. The bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 402 MHz(773~1,175 MHz) for low band and 583 MHz(1,622~2,205 MHz) for high band. As a result, the proposed antenna covers the five bands of GSM850, GSM900, DCS1800, PCS1,900 and WCDMA for a 3:1 VSWR. Moreover, the radiation pattern, gain and efficiency are appropriate for mobile handset. Therefore, this antenna is suitable for small sized multi-band mobile handset applications.
