The keyhole formed by high energy density laser-material interaction periodically collapses due to surface tension of the molten metal in partial penetration welds. The collapse sometimes traps a void at the bottom of the keyhole, and it remains as welding defects. This phenomenon is seen as one cause of the instability of the keyhole during laser beam welding. Thus, it seems likely that improving the stability of the keyhole can reduce voids and uniform the penetration depth. The goal of this work is to develop techniques for controlling laser weld keyhole dynamics to reduce weld defects such as voids and inconsistent penetration. Statistical analysis of the penetration depth signals in glycerin determined that keyhole dynamics are chaotic. The chaotic nature of keyhole fluctuations and the ability of laser power modulation to control them have been demonstrated by high-speed video images of laser welds in glycerin. Additionally, an incident leading beam angle is applied to enhance the stability of the keyhole. The quasi-sinusoidal laser beam power of 400Hz frequency and 15$^{\circ}$ incident leading beam angle were determined to be the optimum parameters for the reduction of voids. Finally, chaos analyses of uncontrolled signals and controlled signals were done to show the effectiveness of modulation on the keyhole dynamics. Three-dimensional phase plots for uncontrolled system and controlled system are produced to demonstrate that the chaotic keyhole dynamics is converted to regular periodic behavior by control methods: power modulation and incident leading beam angle.

Objectives: This study evaluated the maximum depth and percentage of irrigant penetration into dentinal tubules by passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI). Materials and Methods: Thirty extracted human teeth were instrumented and divided into three groups. According to final irrigation regimen, 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (Group A, NaOCl), 2% chlorhexidine (Group B, CHX) and saline solution (Group C, control group) were applied with Irrisafe 20 tips (Acteon) and PUI. Irrigant was mixed with 0.1% rhodamine B. Sections at 2 mm, 5 mm, and 8 mm from the apex were examined with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The percentage and maximum depth of irrigant penetration were measured. Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test were performed for overall comparison between groups at each level and for pairwise comparison, respectively. Within a group, Wilcoxon test was performed among different levels. p values less than 0.05 were considered significant. Results: In all groups, highest penetration depth and percentage of penetration were observed at the 8 mm level. At 2 mm level, Groups A and B had significantly greater depths and percentages in penetration than Group C (p < 0.05), but there were no significant differences between Groups A and B. At 5 mm level, penetration depths and percentage of penetration was not significantly different among the groups. Conclusions: NaOCl and CHX applied by PUI showed similar depth and percentage of penetration at all evaluated levels.
Static and dynamic penetration tests of reinforced concrete (RC) slab specimens are described and discussed. The experimental study was aimed at a better understanding of mechanisms that are involved in dynamic penetration, through their identification in static tests, and by establishing their relative influence in similar dynamic cases. The RC specimens were $80{\times}80-cm$ square plates, and they were made of 30 MPa concrete. The non-deforming steel penetrator was a 50-mm diameter steel rod with a conical nose of 1.5 aspect ratio. Impact penetration tests were carried out with an air gun, which launched the projectiles at velocities of up to 300 m/sec. The static tests were conducted using a closed loop displacement control actuator, where the penetrator was pushed at a constant rate of displacement into the specimen. The static tests reveal important mechanisms that govern the penetration process and therefore contribute to a better understanding of RC barriers resistance to non-deforming projectiles impact.
This paper deals with the effect of laser welding parameters on the weld formation. Thin steels for automotive application were prepared so as to be welded with high power carbon dioxide laser system. Major process parameters were position of focus and travel speed. The effect of shielding gas was also discussed by employing the high speed photometry. Test results showed that the optimal position of focus varied in accordance with the joint configuration; bead-on-plate, butt or lap welding. It was recommended that the position of focus for the lap welding be located at slightly inner part of the material to be welded. In this case, however, it was noticeable that the weld penetration ratio, d/t$_{0}$ dropped drastically at the critical region. Results also demonstrated that both the bead width and penetration reduced as the travel speed increased. The penetration ratio showed two distinct regions; stabilized zone at the lower range of the travel spped and sudden drop zone at the higher range of travel speed. Lower limit of the penetration for acceptable weld was proved to be about 90% of the parent metal thickness based on the physical properties of the weld. Mixed gas application for both the shielding of molten metal and laser induced plasma control was recommended as far as the penetration was concerned.d.
Recently wind energy penetration into power systems has increased. Wind power, as a renewable energy source, plays a different role in the power system compared to conventional power generation units. As long as only single and small wind power units are installed in the power system, wind power does not influence power system operation and can easily be integrated. However, when wind power penetration reaches a significantly high level and conventional power production units are substituted, the impact of wind power on the power system becomes noticeable and must be handled. The connection of large wind turbines and wind farms to the grid has a large impact on grid stability. The electrical power system becomes more vulnerable to and dependent on wind energy production, and therefore there is an increased concern about the large wind turbines impact on grid stability. In this work, a new type of fuzzy logic controller for the frequency control of wind farms is proposed and its performance is verified using SimWindFarm toolbox which was developed as part of the Aeolus FP7 project.
The potential advantages of the hybrid welding process are improved weld penetration, enhanced gap tolerance, control of weld metal composition, and improved weld quality in comparison to laser or arc welding. Especially, the deep penetration of hybrid welding is very attractive in welding of thick plates. In this study, therefore, the influence of arc power in hybrid welding on detailed bead dimensions at different laser power levels was investigated.
Partial penetration welding Joint defines that groove welds without steel backing, welded from on side, and groove weeds welded from both sides but without back gouging, that is. it has an unwelded portion at the root of the weld. In this study we analysed fur residual stress and displacement distribution on partial penetration welding condition of thick plate metal. For 25.4mm thick plate, theoretical residual stress and displacement analysis by finite element method using ABAQUS was carried out and compared with the experimental result using hole-drilling method. In results of the condition of partial penetration, it appeared that longitudinal stress at welding area was a little difference and transverse stress did not have any effect by partial penetration multi-pass welding. From a point of welding distortion in partial penetration multi-pass welding, it seemed to be better to control root face smaller than 6.35mm.
Weld pool oscillation for the full-penetration GTA welding process was investigated for its possible application to weld penetration control through theoretical modeling and experiment. Energy method was used to estimate the natural frequency of the molten pool having the physically-acceptable weld geometry and oscillation modes. An unique experimental system was built which had the data acquisiton and video capabilities so that the pool oscillation signals and molten pool surfaces could be monitored continuously. Pool oscillation was detected through arc voltage and arc light emission simultaneously. The signal from arc light emission showed good coherence with that from arc voltage, and arc light generated the higher quality signal. The molten pool was found to oscillate in different oscillation modes based on the travel speed and weld geometry. The natural frequency estimated from the theoretical model agreed reasonably well with the experimental results.
In order to improve the leakage prediction and rotordynamic analysis of an annular seal with a smooth rotor and circumferentially grooved stator, CFD analysis using FLUENT has been performed to determine the groove penetration angle a which is the angle of separation line between control volumes II and III in groove section of Ha and Lee's three-control-volume theory. Validation to the present analysis using new penetration angle determined by the CFD analysis is achieved by comparisons with the results of published Ha and Lee's analysis. For the leakage prediction the present analysis shows slight improvement and CFD results yields the best. Direct damping and cross-coupled stiffness coefficients are predicted better to the experimental ones. However, direct stiffness coefficient is predicted worse.
