  • For the manufacturing lightweight fine aggregate, clay and waste material was formed by pelletizer. The fine aggregate of 1-5 mm diameter was formed by diameter 76 cm pelletizer disc. Pelletization variables were : (1) pelletizer disc angle, (2) speed of revolution of pelletizer, (3) added pelletization time. Green and sintered aggregate were measured specific gravity, absorption rate and average size. The optimum condition were found that the pelletization variables were angle at $70^{\circ}$, speed of revolution of pelletizer at 23.2 rpm, and water/solid ratio at 1/5. At these conditions, it was formed that fine aggregate green whose average size was $2.0{\sim}3.35mm$. Specific gravity and average size are increased with low angle of disc and fast revolution speed of disc. Specific gravity and average size were not distinctly influenced by added pelletization time. Sintered aggregate was distinctly influenced by properties of green.

  • This study was performed to develop extrusion pelletizer for pelletizing the compost waste food. The effect of water content on the shape of pellet, the relationship between diameter of pellet and of extrusion hole and the relationship between extrusion force and die angle were investigated. Considering the stable shape of compost pellet and the operation efficiency of pelletizer, the water content of 2~4% was considered as the best condition. And the compost pellet could not maintain it's shape at the water content of 10% or over. The strongest extrusion force was needs when the die angle had $90^{\circ}C$ in 6 mm extrusion hole diameter, on the other hand, the weakest extrusion force was need at the die angle of $45^{\circ}{\sim}65^{\circ}$. The compression strength of pellet shows the highest strength of 9.2Mpa when we make the compost pellet after screening the compost and make it with a size of 1.18 mm(No.16) or less.

  • This study was conducted to determine changes in internal temperature and chemical composition during the composting of broiler litter(BL) and to evaluate the feasibility of use of a small-scale pelletizer for the pelleting of composted BL. BL was composted for 4 weeks in an wooden cell with a size of 1 m length $\times$ 1 m width $\times$ 1.2 m height. Internal temperature reached to peak(68$^{\circ}C$) at the fourth day and thereafter gradually reduced. Among chemical components in BL, composting reduced organic matter content and increased dry matter and indigestible protein(ADF-CP) contents. When BL was pelleted using an economical small-scale pelletizer, the proper die diameter was 8~18 mm and the proper moisture content of composted BL was 20~25%. Beyond these proper conditions, addition of heat and pressure or pellet aids may be necessary. Pelleting of BL resulted in nearly threefold increase of bulk density, significant moisture evaporation, and little change in chemical components except for increased indigestible protein. In conclusion, BL may be converted into a feed with low to medium nutrition by the composting and pelleting process.

  • Biomass is considered to be a major potential fuel and renewable resource for the future. In fact, there is high potential to produce the large amount of energy from biomass around the world. In this study, to obtain basic data for practical application of agricultural and forest by-products as fuel of heating system in agriculture, agricultural and forest biomass resources were surveyed, the pelletizer with capacity of $50\;kg{\cdot}h^{-1}$ was designed and manufactured and pellets were made by the pelletizer. High heating value, ash content, etc. of pellets made of agricultural and forest by-products were estimated. Straw of rice was the largest agricultural biomass in 2009 and the total amount of rice straw converted into energy of $299{\times}10^3$ TOE. And in 2009, amount of forest by-product converted into energy of $9,579{\times}10^3$ TOE. High heating values of pellets made of stem and seed of rape, stem of oat, rice straw and rice husk were 16,034, 16,026, 16,089, 15,650, $15,044\;kJ{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ respectively. High heating values of pellets made of agricultural by-products were average 83.6% compared to that of wood pellet. Average bulk density of pellets made of stem and seed of rape, stem of oat, rice straw and rice husk was $1,400\;kg{\cdot}m^{-3}$ ($1.4\;g{\cdot}cm^{-3}$). Ash contents of the pellets were 6.6, 7, 6.2, 5.5, 33% respectively. Rice husk pellet produced the largest ash content compared to other kinds of pellets.

  • In this study, soda lime was prepared from slaked lime to expand the scope of limestone use. To evaluate carbon dioxide absorption, an extruder-type and disc-type pelletizers were used to make the soda lime using bentonite as an additive. Regardless of the pelletizing process, the peak of CaCO3 was confirmed in soda lime due to its reaction with carbon dioxide. Furthermore, it was confirmed that both calcite and aragonite were present together. The soda lime prepared using the disc-type pelletizer showed a larger specific surface area than that prepared using the extruder-type pelletizer did, and the specific surface area improved on adding bentonite. The carbon dioxide absorption rate increased under the sample condition with an enhanced specific surface area.

  • In this study, it was conducted to produce wood pellets using domestic forest thinning residues and examine their quality according to Korean pellet quality standard. Raw materials were composed of larch and mixed broad leaves species. Based on the small-end diameter (6 cm), they were classified into four different types of raw materials such as LM (larch with middle diameter), LS (larch with small diameter), MM (mixed broadleaf with middle diameter), and MS (mixed broadleaf with small diameter). After crushing and drying process, wood pellets were produced by a ring-die type pelletizer using each raw material. Wood pellets made from four different types of raw materials were tested for their quality such as calorific value, moisture content, ash content, inorganic matters and so on. As results of quality analysis, the calorific values of all wood pellets were higher than 198 kcal/kg, and satisfied with the first grade of Korea wood pellet standard. The ash content was slightly increased after pelletizing. Mechanical durability of wood pellets was highly dependent on the types of raw materials. The quality differences among wood pellets were turned out due to different physical and chemical characteristics of raw materials even though the same pelletizing condition was applied.

  • Porous mineral coating have been fabricated and applied for basic research on their slow release action to a fertilizer. Feldspar was selected as raw mineral for the coating and two different particle sizes of powder were prepared. Slow-release action was estimated by using a potassium sulfate fertilizer. Spherical pellets were prepared with a pan-type pelletizer and then screened into sizes ranging 1.4 to 2.35mm. While the fertilizer pellets were rotated in the pelletizer again, the feldspar powder and 0.5% polyvinyl alcohol solution were simultaneously sprayed on the pellets. The fertilizer pellets coated with feldspar powder were fabricated. The pellets were heated to increase their strength and screened to sort by coating thickness. Potassium releasing tests were conducted for 40 days and the performance for slow-release action was estimated as functions of the heating temperature, coating thickness and raw mineral powder size. The Burst effect caused high initial releasing rate. Releasing kinetics was proportional to concentration of potassium in pellets. The pellet that was fabricated with $27.4{\mu}m$-sized feldspar and heated at $1050^{\circ}C$ showed a releasing rate of 43% on the 40th day.
