The effects of variability of the mechanical properties of lead rubber bearings on the response of a seismic isolation system are investigated. Material variability in manufacturing, aging, and operation temperature is assumed, and two variation models of an isolation system are considered. To evaluate the effect of ground motion characteristics on the response, 27 earthquake record sets with different peak A/V ratios were selected, and three components of ground motions were used for a seismic response analysis. The response in an isolation system and a superstructure increases significantly for ground motions with low A/V ratios. The variation in the mechanical properties of isolators results in a significant influence on the shear strains of the isolators and the acceleration response of the superstructure. The variation provisions in the ASCE-4 are reasonable, but more strict variation limits should be given to isolation systems subjected to ground motions having low A/V ratios. For application of seismic isolation systems to safety-related nuclear structures, the variation in the material and mechanical properties of the isolation system should be properly controlled during the manufacturing and aging processes. In addition, special consideration should be given to minimize the accidental torsion caused by the dissimilarity in the stiffness variations of the isolators.
Paddy rice is typically stored during postharvest until rice grain is processed into brown rice and milled rice by hulling and milling procedure, respectively. Recently, instead of storing paddy rice, storage of brown rice has been in the spotlight because it is more convenient and economically feasible. Different brown rice cultivars with varying amylose contents including waxy rice, medium-waxy rice, and non-glutinous rice were stored in room temperature storage for four months, and the changes in grain qualities of brown rice were evaluated. Amylose content significantly affected pasting properties in which rice cultivar with higher amylose content showed longer pasting time and higher peak viscosity. Storage also affected pasting viscosities, showing an increase in peak viscosity, but a decrease in breakdown viscosity. The changes in pasting viscosity during storage could be an important starch property for aged brown rice utilization. Waxy brown rice showed the weakest aging property in terms of free fatty acids (FFA) accumulation, whereas non-glutinous rice was more substantial grain quality against aging. The FFA values of two months storage were not significantly different from the initial FFA contents, suggesting that brown rice stored in room temperature for two months could be feasible for direct consumption of brown rice.
The dependence of photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence itation (PLE) on preparation condi-tions and the aging of porous silicon carbide (PSC) have been investigatted. The fiber size of the material pre-pared under dark-current mode, labele d DCM, was larger than that of the photoassisted (PA)process. The intensity of the PL spectrum for the PA condition was higher than that of the DCM condition. The PA condition giving small fiber size exhibited amore prominent high-energy component but the emission bands of both con-ditionsobserved were rather similar. The origin of the PL may have played an importantrole in the surface defect center introduced by the reaction conditions ofHFatthe surface of the silicon carbide. Selective excita-tion of the PL bandsusingdifferent excitation wavelengths has been used to identify distinct componentswith-in the PL bandwidth. Two main PL bands with peak wavelength of494 and534 nm were clearly resolved. On the other hand, selectivc emission of the PLEbands using different emission wavelengths has been used to identify distinct components within the PLE bandwidth. The higher energy band with peak wavelength of 338 nm and the lower energy bands involving 390,451 and 500 nm were clearly resolved. According to the pro-ionged aging in air, PL spectra appearedasone band, This emission probably originated from states localized to the band-to-band recombination due to the oxidation on the crystallite surface.
This study has investigated the effect of aging treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-6Al-xZn(x = 1.5, 2.5) alloys fabricated by the squeeze casting process. The microstructures of as-squeeze cast were composed of pro-eutectic ${\alpha}$, super saturated ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ compound. Aged at both $200^{\circ}C$ and $240^{\circ}C$, Mg-6Al-xZn alloys showed the peak hardness due to the formation of ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ precipitates. The discontinuous precipitates of the lamella type are predominant at $200^{\circ}C$ aging treatment, while the finely dispersed continuous precipitates were dominant at $240^{\circ}C$ aging treatment. Mg-6Al-xZn alloys fabricated by the squeeze casting process had the better combination of tensile strength and elongation compared to the conventionally cast alloys. As zinc contents increased, the tensile strength was increased by the solid solution strengthening effect of zinc.
The effect of humidity on crystallization and polymorphic transformation of hydrous aluminum oxide under various humidity at $37^{\circ}$ was examined by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron micrograph, IR spectra and DTA. The humidity was an important factor influencing crystallization of hydrous aluminum oxide. The growth or crystal was strongly accelerated by humidity. The aging process is assumed that it is composed of two seperate steps, an increase of the diffraction around $36{\sim}42^{\circ}$, and an appearance and its development of the peak at $18{\sim}20^{\circ}$ of $2{\theta}$ value. The former is considered to be nucleation and the latter correspond to the growth period on crystallization. The crystalline form of aging products was various depending on the degree of humidity, directly it leads to the eventual formation of bayerite in more than 72%, $b{\"{o}}hmite$ in 50% and resembled to Nordstandite in 0% relative humidity, respectively but once formed, it was mostly stable in each surroundings and does not transform to the other more stable form in solid state even after aging for five years. The mechanism responsible for aging is further polymerization process of six-membered rings by deprotonation-dehydration reaction in which positively charged polynuclear hydroxy aluminum complexes formed in the presence of moisture are joined at their edges by double hydroxide bridges.
The nano/microstructure and mechanical properties of the eutectic regions in thixo and rheo cast A356 alloy parts were investigated using nano/micro-indentation and mechanical scratching, combined with optical microscopy and atomic force microscope (AFM).Most eutectic Si crystals in the A356 alloy showed a modified morphology as fine-fibers, however Si particles of network in eutectic region was formed quickly with aging time increase in thixo-cast. The aging responses of the eutectic regions in both the thixo and rheo cast A356 alloys aged at $150^{\circ}C$ for different times (0, 2, 4, 8, 10, 16, 24, 36, and 72 h) were investigated. Both Vickers hardness ($H_V$) and indentation ($H_{IT}$) test results showed almost the same trend of aging curves, the peak was obtained at the same aging time of 10 h.
This study investigates the nano/microstructure, the aging response, and the mechanical/tribological properties of the eutectic regions in rheoformed A356 alloy-T5 parts using nano/micro-indentation and mechanical scratching, combined with optical microscopy and atomic force microscope (AFM). Most eutectic Si crystals in the A356 alloy showed a modified morphology as fine-fibers. The loading curve for the eutectic region was more irregular than that of the primary Al region due to the presence of various particles of varying strength. The aging responses of the eutectic regions in the rheoformed A356 alloys aged at $150^{\circ}C$ for different times (0, 2, 4, 8, 10, 16, 24, 36, and 72 h) were investigated. Both Victors hardness $(H_v)$ and indentation $(H_{IT})$ test results showed a similar trend of aging curves, and the peak was obtained at the same aging time of 10 h. A remarkable size-dependence of the tests was found.
Effects of aging treatment on the microstructural evolution of a rapidly solidified Al-Li-Cu alloy were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). It was found that the precipitation sequence was: supersaturated solid solution ${\alpha}^{\prime}$${\rightarrow}$ metastable ${\delta}^{\prime}$ + stable precipitate $T_1$${\rightarrow}$ stable precipitates ${\delta}+T_1$. Two exothermic and two endothermic peaks are detected by DSC analysis. The two exothermic and endothermic peaks corresponded to ${\delta}^{\prime}$ and ${\delta}+T_1$ precipitation and dissolution reactions respectively. The enthalpy of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ precipitation decreased with increasing of aging temperature and time until the finishing point of precipitation. The activation energy for precipitation of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ was measured as 80KJ/mol and the energy for dissolution was 93KJ/mol. These values arc higher than those of AI-Li binary alloy. Peak hardness value (Hv 170) was obtamed at $210^{\circ}C$ for 1hr aging treatment which coincided with finishing point of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ precipitation.
In this work a method to detect the vibrational peak and to decide the vibrational mode of detected peak for core internal vibration monitoring system which is particularly concerned on the core support barrel (CSB) and fuel assemblies is developed. Flow induced vibration and aging process in the reactor internals cause unsoundness of the internal structure. In order to monitor the vibrational status of core internal, signals from the ex-core neutron detectors are transformed into frequency domain. By analyzing transformed frequency domain signal, an analyst can acquire the information on the vibrational characteristics of the structures, i.e., vibration frequencies of each component, vibrational level, modes of vibration, and the causes of the abnormal vibration, if any. This study is focused on the development of the automated monitoring system. Several methods are surveyed to define the peaks in power spectrum and fuzzy theory is used to automatic detection of the vibrational peaks. Fuzzy algorithm is adopted to define the modes of vibration using the peak values from fuzzy peak recognition, phase spectrum, and coherence spectrum.
Objective: Pork is an important source of animal protein in many countries. Subtle physiochemical changes occur during pork postmortem aging. The changes of apoptosis and autophagy in pork at 6 h to 72 h after slaughter were studied to provide evidence for pork quality. Methods: In this article, morphological changes of postmortem pork was observed through Hematoxylin-eosin staining, apoptotic nuclei were observed by TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling assay, protein related to apoptosis and autophagy expressions were tested by western blot and LC3 level were expressed according to immunofluorescence assay. Results: In this study, we found the occurrence of apoptosis in postmortem pork, and the process was characterized by nucleus condensation and fragmentation, formation of apoptotic bodies, increase in apoptosis-related Bax/Bcl-2 levels, and activation of caspases. Autophagy reached its peak between 24 and 48 h after slaughter, accompanied by the formation of autophagosomes on the cell membrane and expression of autophagy-related proteins beclin-1, P62, LC3-I, LC3-II, and ATG5. Conclusion: Obvious apoptosis was observed at 12 h and autophagy reached its peak at 48 h. The present work provides the evidence for the occurrence of apoptosis and autophagy during postmortem aging of pork. In conclusion, the apoptosis and autophagy of muscle cells discovered in this study have important implications for pork in the meat industry.
