  • The retention basin is a river-facility for the flood mitigation by storing the river flow temporarily. The new 3 retention basins are installed in these regions YeoJu, NaJu, YoungWol by the Large River Management Project. In this study, 1D and 2D numerical flow simulation are conducted to evaluate the reduction effect of the peak flood stage for the YeoJu retention basin. HEC-RAS and FLDWAV models are used for 1D simulation with the option of retention basin. CCHE2D model is used for 2D simulation with the same hydrograph used in 1D simulation. It is verified that the peak flood stage is reduced very largely about 0.13 m near the overtopping section of the levee in 1D simulation. It is verified that the peak flood stage is reduced very largely about 0.20 m at the upstream-end of the simulated reach in 2D simulation. 2D simulation for the retention basin is more reasonable because physical characteristics of topography in the model, and also more advantageous for the evaluation of the flow characteristics of the in- and outside of the retention basin on the results of simulation of this study.

  • The objective of this study is to estimate the unregulated flood frequency from Chungju dam to Yangpyung gauging station for the region affected by dams based on the peak discharges simulated by storage function routing model. From the flood frequency analyses, the quantiles for the unregulated flood frequency at 6 sites have similar pattern to each other, and their averaged quantile almost matched to the result from the regional flood frequency analysis. The quantile and annual mean discharge for the unregulated flood frequency for the downstream of Chungju dam show the similar behaviour to those for the upstream area. While the quantile and the annual mean discharge for the regulated flood frequency are significantly different from those for the unregulated flood frequency. In particular, the qunatile shows severe difference as the return period increases, and the annual mean discharge has a tendency to approach to the natural flood as the distance from dam increases.

  • This study investigates the impact of event characteristics on runoff dynamics during extreme flood events observed in a $8.5km^2$ experimental watershed located in South Korea. The 37 most extreme flood events with event rainfall in excess of 50 mm were analysed using an event-based rainfall-runoff model; the Revitalised Flood Hydrograph (ReFH) routinely used for design flood estimation in the United Kingdom. The ReFH model was fitted to each event in turn, and links were investigated between each of the two model parameters controlling runoff production and response time, respectively, and event characteristics such as rainfall depth, duration, intensity and also antecedent soil moisture. The results show that the structure of the ReFH model can effectively accommodate any nonlinearity in runoff production, but that the linear unit hydrograph fails to adequately represent a reduction in watershed response time observed for the more extreme events. By linking the unit hydrograph shape directly to rainfall depth, the consequence of the observed nonlinearity in response time is to increase design peak flow by between 50% for a 10 year return period, and up to 80% when considering the probable maximum flood (PMF).

  • Geographic Information System (GIS) has advantage of analyzing spatial distributed data and handling spatial data for hydrologic analysis. Hydrologic Engineering Center's Hydrologic Modeling System(HEC-HMS) with HEC-GeoHMS was used to analyze flood runoff at agricultural small watershed. HEC-GeoHMS, which is an ArcView GIS extension designed to process geospatial data for HEC-HMS, is a useful tool for storing, managing, analyzing, and displaying spatially distributed data. Hydroligical component including peak discharge, time to peak, direct runoff, baseflow for Balhan study watershed, which is located in Whasung city, Kyunggi province, having an area of $29.79km^2$, were calculated using the HEC-HMS model with HEC-GeoHMS.

  • This study aims to apply and compare flood routing methods for irrigation reservoirs. In this research, three methods, which are the storage indication method(SIM), the mass curve method(MCM), the frog method(FM) were adopted and applied to two storm events of July $9{\sim}10\;and\;22{\sim}23$ of Donghwa-dam and its watershed located on Jangsoo-gun, Chunnam province. As the application results MCM showed the highest value at peak overflow and goodness-of-fit to the observed value, although the others also had similar value with the observed one. In analyzing lag time of peak between inflow and overflow MCM and SIM showed 7 hours, while FM showed 6 hours for the first storm event, and all three methods showed 3 hours for the second event.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the flood hydrograph and runoff at ungaged small watershed by using interactive program with geomorphologic and climatic data obtained from the topographic maps following the law of stream classification and ordering by Horton and Strahler. The present model is modified from Allam's interactive program which derives the geomorphologic instantaneous unit hydrograph(GIUH). This program uses the results of Laplace transformation and convolution integral of probability density function in travel time at each station, This program is used to estimate the time to peak, the flood discharge and the direct runoff at San seong station in Bocheong Stream.

  • In recent years satellite data have been increasingly used for the analysis of floodprone areas. This study was carried out to demonstrate the usefulness of repetitive satellite imagery in monitoring flood levels of the Pyungchang watershed. Runoff characteristics parameters were analyzed by Soil Conservation Service(SCS) Runoff Curve Number(RCN) based on Landsat imagery and Digital Terrain Model data. The RCN average within the watershed was calculated from RCN estimates for all the pixels(picture elements) and adjusted by antecedent precipitation conditions. The direct runoff hydrograph was derived from the unit hydrograph using SCS dimensionless unit hydrograph and effective rainfalls estimated by the SCS method. In comparsion of the direct runoff hydrograph with the measured rating curve their peak times differ by one hour and peak discharges differ by 5.9 percents of the discharge from each other. It was shown that repetitive satellite image could be very useful in timely estimating watershed runoffs and evaluating ever-changing surface conditions of a river basin.

  • A Numerical modeling approach is usually applied to reproduce the physical phenomena of a fill dam-break. The accuracy of the dam-break model depends on the physical structure that defines input variables such as the storage volume, breach formation and progress, and the parameters of the model, which are subjective as they are prescribed by users. In this study, a sensitivity analysis was performed for the nonlinear breach progression curve that was already developed, which includes four parameters. The study focuses on the two of the parameters which control the breach forming time and peak discharge. The model is coupled with a two-dimensional flood simulation model (FLO-2D) to examine flood coverage and depth. It is generally observed that the parameter ${\beta}$ controls only the breach forming time, the parameter ${\gamma}$ is particularly sensitive to the peak flow.

  • The objectives of this study are to evaluate the applicability of SCS TR-20 model for small ungauged watershed, to show the behavior of the model with variation of topography in watershed, and to evaluate the storage effect of paddy field for flood flow. For this purpose, simulated data from the model were compared with the observed flood data at two sites (HS#3, HS#4) in Balan watershed. From the comparison between simulated and observed data, it was found that the model is applicable to this watershed.

  • The objectives of the thesis are to estimate flood using critical storm duration. The hydrological models were tested with field data from two small watersheds. The hydrological parameters were defined using the GIS system. And the results from different peak runoff equations and hydrologic models were found to simulate runoff hydrographs that are comparative to the observed.
