  • 액체 연료 분포의 균일성과 대칭성은 연소 효율을 높이고, 공해 물질을 줄이는데 있어서 필수적인 요소이기 때문에 분무 패턴을 정량적으로 해석하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 고전적으로 사용되고 있는 mechanical patternator는 ⅰ) 유동을 교란시키고, ⅱ) 공간 분해능이 떨어지며, ⅲ) 복잡한 재순환 유동이나 화학 반응이 있는 유동에서의 적용이 어렵다는 단점을 가지고 있다. 이러한 단점들을 극복하기 위하여 레이저를 이용한 optical patternator에 대한 연구가 진행되고 있다. Optical patternator는 유동을 교란시키지 않으면서 고해상도의 분무 패턴 측정을 할 수 있다. 형광 신호는 물질의 체적에 비례한다. 따라서, 레이저 평면광을 분무에 조사시켜 주어서 유도되는 형광 신호를 이용하는 평면액체 레이저 유도 형광법(PLLIF : Planar Liquid Laser Induced Fluorescence)은 분무패턴을 알아보는 매우 유용한 방법이다.

Comparision of Spray Angles of Pintle-Type Gasoline Injector with Different Measuring Methods (측정방법에 따른 핀틀형 가솔린 인젝터의 분무각 비교)

  • Spray angle, a parameter which is most commonly used to evaluate. spray distribution, is important because it affects the axial and radial distribution of the fuel. Spray angles were measured and compared for the pintle-type gasoline fuel injector with n-heptane as a test fuel with the three different measuring techniques, i.e. digital image processing, shadowgraphy and spray patternator, respectively. Fuel was injected with the injection pressures of 0.2-0.35MPa into the room temperature and atmospheric pressure environment. In digital image processing method, the transmittance level greatly influences the spray angle with the axial distance from the injector. From the experimental results by the shadowgraphy technique, it is obvious that the spray angle vary during the injection period. The results of spray angle from the spray patternator show that there exist the different spray angles in the different areas. The spray angles increase with the increase in the injection pressure for the three measurement techniques considered in this study. The spray angle is widely different, especially in the near region from the injector, according to the measurement techniques used in this experimental work.

  • Impinging angle, impinging distance, length eve. diameter and injection pressure of a triplet injector were tested to evaluate the spray characteristics injected by liquid/gas combinations. Two different kinds of unlike triplet sprays were produced by changing the gas and liquid feed lines. One was the G-L-G(Gas-Liquid-Gas) type, and the other was L-G-L(Liquid-Gas-Liquid) type. Spray angles were wider with the G-L-G type than with L-G-L type. Mass distributions in spray were obtained with a, mechanical patternator. Mass distributions were not circular but elliptical distributions. When the range of mechanical patternator to injector decreased, mass distributions were more concentrated in the center region.

  • Optical Line Patternator(OLP) has been applied to get a distribution of the spray at high ambient pressure. OLP is a combined technique of extinction measurement and image processing. The attenuated intensity of laser beam after traversing spray region was measured by using a photo-detector, and the line image of Mie-scattering was captured simultaneously in the path of each laser beam by using a CCD camera. The distribution of extinction coefficient in the spray is obtained by processing these data with the algebraic reconstruction technique. From the distribution of extinction coefficient, the surface distribution of spray can be reconstructed. OLP does not use laser sheet but use laser beam so that the noise effect of multiple scattering, caused by increasing number density of droplet in high pressure environment, is reduced drastically. OLP is expected as a suitable method which can investigate the characteristics of relatively large spray under the high pressure environment such as liquid rocket engine.

  • The mixing of fuel and oxidizer and each mass distribution of unlike split triplet(F-O-O-F) injector for liquid rocket which are known to affect the combustion efficiency significantly, has been investigated using PLLIF technique. Experiment is conducted to investigate the effect of mixture ratio(MiR), momentum ratio(MoR) and impinging angle on mixing efficiency. The mixing efficiency, which is introduced by Rupe, gives the global chracteristic of spray mixing. Experiment far comparison with triplet injector(F-O-F), which has same momentum ratio and impinging angle with split triplet injector is conducted.

  • In this experimental study, measurement techniques such as backlight imaging, optical patternator, and laser sheet drop sizing were applied to characterize open-type swirl injector used in Russian liquid rocket engine, RD 107. The typical development of swirl spray was observed in backlight images. The breakup length was measured by using the ratio between Mie scattering and fluorescence signal. Relative Sauter Mean Diameter was measured by using laser sheet drop sizing and the possible source of errors were discussed.

  • Characteristics of sprays injected by gas/liquid coaxial atomizers operated at atmospheric pressure are studied using shadowgraph, mechanical patternator and PDPA. The gas-to- liquid momentum flux ratio(M) and the liquid Reynolds number(Re) are selected as key parameters in characteristics of gas/liquid coaxial sprays from the dimensional analysis. The properties of shear coaxial sprays are compared with those of swirl coaxial sprays through the macroscopic and microscopic analysis. Macroscopic similarities between shear and swirl coaxial sprays are revealed under flow conditions of high momentum flux ratio. Also, empirical correlations between the mean drop diameters(D32) and operating conditions of coaxial sprays are proposed in this paper.

  • The main parameter commonly used to evaluate spray distribution is spray angle. Spray angle is important because it influences the axial and radial distribution of the fuel. Spray angles were measured and compared for the two non-air assisted injectors such as 2hole-2stream 4hole-1stream injectors used for port fuel injection gasoline engines with n-heptane as a fuel by three different measuring techniques, i.e., digital image processing, shadowgraphy, and spray patternator, respectively. Fuel was injected with the injection pressures of 0.2-0.35 MPa into the room temperature and atmospheric pressure environment. In digital image processing approach, the selection of the transmittance level is critical to obtain the edge of spray and hence to measure the spray angle. From the measurement results by the shadowgraphy technique, it is dear that the spray angle is varied during the spray injection period. The measurement results from spray patternator show that the different spray angles exist in different region. Spray angle increases with the increase in the injection pressure. it is suggested that the spray angle and stream separated angle should be specified when spray is characterized for 2hole-2stream injector, because spray angle is much different though stream separated angle is same. It was also considerably affected by the measurement techniques introduced in this experimental work. However, the optimal axial distance for measuring the spray angle seems to be at least 60-80 mm from the injector tip for two non-air assisted injectors.

  • In this study, cold flow and combustion tests are conducted and analyzed to validate designed rocket engine head generating high temperature/pressure steam. At first, uni-injector was designed and manufactured, and cold flow test was conducted. Through this, differential pressure that can supply designed flow rate was confirmed. Also, Each injector's spray pattern were confirmed by patternator. Based on cold flow test results, we selected injectors among the candidates and arranged them on engine head, and cold flow and propellant spray tests were conducted. Finally, combustion test was carried out to analyze the flow rate, pressure, combustion efficiency. As a result, validation of rocket engine head for the development of the high temperature and high pressure steam generator has been completed.

  • A coaxial swirl/shear injector using GCH4/LOx as propellants was degisned and manufactured. Flow analysis by Fluent was performed to decide the number of orifice and the rear shapes of inlet orifice etc. Flow rate of the injector was measured according to differential pressure and uniformity of injector's spray pattern was confirmed by a patternator. The results showed that the difference of flow rate was around 10% and the spray angle of oxidizer was $66^{\circ}$.
