Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) play an important role in innate immunity against pathogenic infections. AMPs exterminate pathogenic bacteria by disrupting cell membranes or inhibiting intracellular molecules. NK-2, first identified in pigs and derived from NK-lysin, has antimicrobial effects against bacteria and parasites. In this study, chimeric peptides (cpNK) of chicken and pig NK-2 and cpNK-derived peptides (cpNK-a1 and cpNK-a2) were synthesized, and their antimicrobial effects against various pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) were investigated. The structure of chimeric peptides from chicken and pig NK-2, cpNK, include α-helix like NK-2 and peptide net charge was +9 like porcine NK-2. The cpNK peptide showed powerful bactericidal effects against most bacterial species, including MRSA, especially against gram-negative bacteria. Furthermore, cpNK-derived short peptides, cpNK-a1 and a2 also showed bactericidal activity, but the effects were weaker than those of cpNK. Therefore, we conclude that cpNK- and cpNK-derived short peptides have the potential to be used as antibiotic alternatives.

Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus is a predatory bacterium which attacks and consumes other bacterial strains, including the well known pathogens E. coli O157 : H7, Salmonella typhimurium and Helicobacter pylori. This remarkable activity has been the focus of research for nearly five decades, with exciting practical applications to medical, agriculture and farming practices recently being published. This article reviews many of the exciting steps research into this bacterium, and similar bacteria, has taken, focusing primarily on their use as both an antibiotic to remove harmful and pathogenic bacteria and as a probiotic to help curb and control the bacterial populations within the intestinal tract. Owing to the unique and dual nature of this bacterium, this review proposes the use of "amphibiotic" to describe these bacteria and their activities.
Objectives: This study aims to examine the concentration, diversity, and antibiotic characteristics of penicillin G resistant enterobacteria present in pharmaceutical effluent. Methods: Water sampling was performed from a pharmaceutical company in Gyeonggi-do Province, Korea in March 2015. Water samples were plated in triplicate on tryptic soy agar plates with 32 mg/L of penicillin G. Penicillin G resistant enterobacteria were selected from the effluent and were subjected to 16S rRNA analysis for penicillin G resistant species determination. Identified resistant strains were tested for resistance to various antibiotics. Results: Penicillin G resistant enterobacteria were present at 6.2% as to culturable heterotrophic bacteria. Identified penicillin G resistant enterobacteria exhibited resistance to more than 10 of the antibiotics studied. These resistant bacteria are gram negative and are closely related to pathogenic species. Conclusion: Multi-antibiotic resistant bacteria in the effluent suggest a need for disinfection and advanced oxidation processes for pharmaceutical effluents.

For isolation of antibiotic-producing bacteria antagonistic to Fusarium oxysporum, a total of 327 microorganisms were screened from sesame-growing soils collected at various locations in Korea by the modified Herr's triple-agar-Iayer technique. Among the 36 bacterial isolates further screened by the dual culture test on tryptic soy agar, 10 were tested to show their antagonistic activity against 14 plant pathogenic fungi. Bacterial culture filtrates were shown either to inhibit some phytopathogenic fungal growth or to suppress F. oxysporum infection of sesame plants maintained in the green house. An isolate, B23, with the most prominent antagonistic activity was identified as Bacillus subtilis.
Antimicrobial coating on chicken carcasses may reduce the effects of cross-contamination and improve product shelf-life and safety. Thyme oil was mixed at 0.5%(v/v) with a pre-gelatinized pea starch coating solution. The coating solution was spread on chicken breast meat after inoculation with selected spoilage and pathogenic bacteria. After inoculation, the chicken meats were packaged in plastic bags and stored at $4^{\circ}C$. During 12 day storage, total aerobic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, and inoculated organisms were counted at 4 day intervals. Thyme oil treatments reduced the viability of Salmonella as well as the growth of Listeria and Pseudomonas by 2 log CFU/g, and appeared to eliminate inoculated Campylobacter during storage. The addition of thyme oil increased the viscosity of the pre-gelatinized pea starch solution. The results suggested that thyme oil inclusion in an edible starch coating may be a satisfactory delivery system to enhance the safety of processed fresh meat.
One hundred one years have passed since Metchnikoff made his first scientific contribution to probiotics study. Intestinal lactic acid bacteria (LAB) for humans are closely associated with the host's health because LAB is an important biodefense factor in preventing colonization and subsequent proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in the intestine. A probiotic is recently defined as "live microorganisms that when administered in adequate amount confer a health benefit on the host". Some species of LAB have been claimed as probiotics, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. casei, L. fermentum, L. plantarum, L. reuteri, and Lactococcus lactis. For understanding the general mechanism of probiotics, this paper would explore the early studies relating to probiotics and intestinal microbiota, and briefly introduce the Prolongation of Life written by Elie Metctmikoff.
The immune system of mammals includes a complex array of cells and molecules, which interact to provide protection from pathogenic microorganisms. The beneficial role played by lactic acid bacteria and milk-derived peptide in the humans, including the effects on the immune system, has been extensively reported. They are present in dairy products and are frequently used as nutraceuticals to some improve some biological functions in the host. The activation of the systemic and secretory immune response by lactic acid bacteria and milk-derived peptide requires many complex interactions among th different constituents of the intestinal ecosystem. The aim of this review was to make the point about the immunological potential of lactic acid bacteria and milk-derived peptide.
Objectives: This study aims to determine the Fractional Inhibitory Concentration Index (FICI) of combinations of Melastoma malabathricum leaf fraction with ciprofloxacin or gentamicin against pathogenic bacteria, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus, isolated from Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU) patients. Methods: We tested concentrations of 45%, 55%, 65%, and 75% of gentamicin and ciprofloxacin using dilution and agar diffusion methods. The combination of M. malabathricum leaf extract with these antibiotics was tested in vitro against all three bacteria. Results: The combination of M. malabathricum leaf extract and ciprofloxacin gave a FICI value of 0.5, indicating synergistic antibacterial activity against the test bacteria. Conclusion: The results show that the antibacterial effect of a combination of high doses of the leaf extract with either antibiotic is greater than that of the leaf extract and the antibiotics in single use.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the microbial contamination levels in elevators in apartment buildings and to provide information on such microbial contamination. Methods: A total of 144 samples, including from the exterior buttons, interior buttons, elevator handrails, walls, ventilators and airborne bacteria were collected in the morning and afternoon from July to August 2013 for six different elevators. The samples were used to detect sanitary indicator bacteria (total bacteria, coliform, and Escherichia coli), pathogenic bacteria (E. coli O157, L. monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., B. cereus, S. aureus) and fungi. Results: Contamination levels of total bacteria were 0.3-3.8 and 0.0-2.4 log CFU/100 $cm^2$ in the morning and afternoon, respectively. In the case of coliform bacteria, the levels were 0.0-3.7 log CFU/100 $cm^2$ in the morning and 0.0-0.3 log CFU/100 $cm^2$ in the afternoon. However, E. coli was not detected among all samples. Bacillus cereus, pathogenic bacteria, was only detected in 13 (11%) among 144 samples. E. coli O157, L. monocytogenes, Salmonella spp. and S. aureus were not detected among all samples. Comparing the samples collected in the morning and afternoon, we could confirm that the samples in the afternoon were cleaner. Conclusions: This study indicates that the samples in the afternoon were cleaner because these samples were collected following routine cleaning. Also, the levels of contamination in the elevators were low and the sanitary conditions were comparatively well-managed. Therefore it is deemed necessary for elevators be cleaned regularly to provide good conditions for people using elevators.

This study assessed the effect of ozone to control pathogenic bacteria in inlet water flowing to flounder farms, establishing operational parameters of ozonation at seawater conditions. Hydraulic retention time in a reaction pipeline after ozonation was fixed at 3 minutes in a flow through system. Concentrations of total residual oxidant (TRO) by ozonation were measured according to different ozonation intensities. The oxidant reduction potential (ORP), which is indirect but enables real-time measurement, was measured in relation to TRO values. TRO values were $0.01{\pm}0.01mg\;L^{-1}$ at an ORP range of 320-410 mV, $0.07{\pm}0.02mg\;L^{-1}$ at 600 mV, and $0.16{\pm}0.03mg\;L^{-1}$ at 700 mV. A heterotrophic marine bacteria colony was reduced by 80.6-97.9%, showing the suppression effect of ozonation on total bacteria in inlet water. At an ORP range of 400-500 mV, colonies of heterotrophic marine bacteria, Vibrio spp., and gram negative bacteria were significantly reduced in outlet water from a culture tank with ongrowing flounder (230 g) at a stocking density of $8kg\;m^{-2}$. Especially, Vibrio spp. and gram negative bacteria were seldom found at 400-500 mV. The daily feeding rate was from over 0.7% to total body weight at 300-500 mV, showing better performance than that in the control. The pathogenic bacteria entering the flounder farm were effectively removed when the ORP range to 400 mV or less.
