  • This study investigates the developmental conditions of functional clothes for the elderly. First, preceding studies and relevant web sites were analyzed along with a survey of commercial functional elderly clothes in Korea. A KIPRIS patent information database was used to study registered and disclosed patents and utility models in order to analyze patent application trends in relevant fields. Patents were searched by year of application from 1990 to 2013. Keywords used for searching included 'senior, aged, and elderly'. Among collected data, overlapping and irrelevant data were excluded to select 162 cases for analysis. Details of analysis are annual patent application trends of functional elderly clothes, topic analysis, shape and characteristics. An examination of commercially available functional clothing products for the elderly indicated that most of products were developed in the form of inner wear or protective clothing for seniors who have bodily discomfort. An annual patent application of functional elderly clothes showed slight fluctuations; however, there was an overall increase. For patent topics, technologies related to secretion and excretion were the most at 47 cases total (29%), followed by 23 cases (14%) on biometric information technology. However, the development of relevant technologies seems necessary in the future as therapeutic function and fiber technologies gradually stagnate.

  • This study examines how the patent results of the University Academic-Industrial Cooperation influence technology transfer. Statistical analysis was performed by using 2013 panel data from the Ministry of Education and Science Technology(MEST) National Research Foundation of Korea(NRF) and the results are as follows. The results show that the patent result factors that have a positive effect on the total number of technology transfers are domestic patent application numbers, foreign patent application numbers, future technology(6T) patent application numbers, science technology patent application numbers. The factors that have a positive effect on increasing royalty are the total number of technology transfers. Domestic patent application numbers, future technology(6T) patent application numbers and science technology patent application numbers have a positive effect on patent results. The results implicate that more research and development is needed for more patents to be applied, that the main focus should be on future technology(6T) and science technology fields, and that effort should be directed at planning negotiation strategies for the term of the contract. However, this study is the need to research, including primary research is so patent performance may be limited in having only been considered in future studies of human and material resources and operating system factors that may be presented to the essential elements of the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation this raises.

  • With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, the patenting activities related to the fields of AI is increasing worldwide. In particular, a share of patent filed in China has exploded in recent years and overtakes the numbers in the US. In the present study, we focus our attention on the patenting activity of China and the US. We analyzed 6,281 and 13,664 patent applications in the US and China respectively between 2008 and 2018, and belonging to the "G06F(Electric Digital Data Processing)", "G06N(Computer Systems Based on Specific Computational Models)", "H04L(Transmission of Digital Information)" and nine more relevant technological classes, as indicated by the International Patent Classification(IPC). Our analysis contributes to: first, the understanding of patent application trends from foreign countries filed in the US and China, 2) patent application status by applicants category such as companies, universities and individuals, 3) the development direction and forecasting vacant technology of AI according to main IPC code. Through the analysis of this paper, we can suggest some implications for patent research related to artificial intelligence in Korea. Plus, by analyzing the most recent patent data, we can provide important information for future artificial intelligence technology research.

  • Patent analysis is the extracting knowledge which is needed for the company's research and development strategy through accumulated worldwide patent database. In order to set the future direction corresponding technology which is scheduled to be developed, the technology trends and deployment processes are identified by analyzing results of present patent applications. The patent analysis provides the required results for analyzing present patent applications. In this paper, technology classification for related patent analysis methods and system, and patent analysis for desalination technology using solar energy development was carried out as well. The patents in Korea, USA, Japan, China, and Europe were searched. The technology trend desalination technology using solar energy was analyzed based on patent application year, countries, main applications, and each technologies. The application status of desalination patents showed a tendency to increase slightly. It was found that the number of patent for applied desalination was USA patent 21.0%, Japan patent 27.0%, China 24.8%, EU 2.7% and Korea patent 24.5%, respectively.

  • This study attempted to creat patent map 163 cases of patent for technology of apparel design using computer technology and researched the trend of Patent application by count교, technologies, applicant and filing date. In regard to application by country, the United States mark the first place with 99 cases (61%), Japan marks the second with 34 cases (21%), Korea the third with 19 cases (12%). Comparing the patent applications in specialized technologies, we find the United States is overwhelming the technologies for garment Production Process, Patterning Process and preparatory process, and Japan is currently undergoing development work in this area, while most of Korean applications are focused in the technologies for selection or substitution methods related to Purchase and sale of apparels, body image and design service Therefore, it is required to preoccupy and defend patent rights as well as develop technologies aggressively and extensively in preparation for the expansion of e-commerce market. Analysing the speed of progress in technology in terms of number of applicants and application cases, we can say it entered into developing stage from the middle of 1990s and it seems that they will continue the development work from now on. in case of Korea, they began in 1996, somewhat late, but reached a similar level with the United States in 2000.

  • The purpose of this study is to set a direction for the development of men's underwear after analyzing current applications for patent regarding men's special-purpose underwear. In terms of a research method, the disclosed patents and utility models were investigated using the patent information database provided by Korea Institute of Patent Information (KIPRIS, http://www.kipris.or.kr). For this, the patents applied from 1990 to October 2015 were targeted. The keywords used for patent search were 'men's underwear' and 'men's special-purpose underwear.' When searched by the keywords above, a total of 1,089 cases were found. Except for expired or cancelled ones, 243 cases were investigated. Then, annual application trends, current registrations on literature records, classification of utility model right holders and contents by topic were analyzed. In terms of data analysis, frequency analysis, crosstabulation analysis and multiple response analysis were conducted, using SPSS 18.0. The results found the followings: In terms of annual application trends, the number of applications for patent started to gradually increase since 2007. Since 2011, it has rapidly increased. In terms of the number of patent registrations, literature registration was far higher than utility model registration. In terms of application rights, 'individually registered (58.8%)' was higher than 'registered by the organization (41.2%).' Among 243 cases, 'underwear (58%)' was the highest, followed by 'men's underwear-related items (29.2%)' and 'thermals (8.2%).' According to analysis on the details of the patent applied for men's underwear, 'penis-scrotum separation' was most focused, followed by 'disposable product' 'airy features,' 'scrotum protection' and 'structure of underwear.'

  • In this paper, a system dynamics model for explaining the application, grant and maintenance of patents is provided. Existing literatures regarding the patent application system are mostly econometric approaches that consider only economic variables such as GDP and R&D. The model in this paper includes patent variables such as disputes as well as economic variables. Moreover, we show that the model can be used in not only a quantitative prediction but also policy experiment. The results of the policy experiment shows that strengthening protection of patents tend to increase the propensity to patent more than R&D investment.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a technical writing model suitable for engineering students based on the practice of technical writing using the patent application form for engineering students. The Dick & Carey model was used to design the teaching of technical writing using the patent application form. In particular, the instructor communicates with the learner and instructs the learner to produce and express students' own ideas. Instruction design in technical writing progresses consists of four steps, such as creating ideas by brainstorming, comprising contents, exercising writing, and feedback. Feedback occurs between an instructor and a learner and also does among students. As writing is proceeding step by step, instruction design for technical writing should come forth with specific methods to make students practice writing in work. Following these steps will help engineering school students to make up new products after graduating university.
