  • Tendon reflex responses generated from mechanical stimulus had been studied for quantitative analysis of activity of tendon reflex, especially patellar tendon reflex responses are known to be a criterion for diagnosing the L3 or L4 radiculopathy. In this paper, we developed a digital signal processing system for analysis of the tendon reflex response. The system parameter, i.e., $\textit{sampling frequency, pre-amplification gain, input channel and filter bank}$ are selected by Using software switches. From the view points of flexibility, the system hardware is connected to an IBM PC for analyzing the tendon reflex parameters, amplitude, latency duration We applied the proposed system to the analysis of the patellar tendon reflex reponses. In the experiment, we measured latency, duration, amplitude of the reflex action potentials generated from vastus medialis, vastus lateralis and rectus femoris that compose quadriceps, and the measured data are analyzed througll the ANOVA test which has 5% significant level. As a result, we showed that the mean amplitude of reflex action potential at the vastus lateralis is larger than any other muscle and the mean latency of the reflex action potential at the rectus femoris is shorter than any other muscle.

  • The main focus of this study was to investigate effects of lumbar central posteroanterior (PA) mobilization on isometric knee extension (IKE) ability and patellar tendon reflex amplitude (PTRA) in healthy university students. University students aged 19-26 (male; 10, female; 10) without any neurological disorders participated voluntarily and excluded the subjects with abnormal reflexes. The participation had an average body mass of $64.25{\pm}13.52kg$, an average height of $1.66{\pm}0.08m$, and an average Body Mass Index (BMI) of $23.07{\pm}3.21$. Every student was randomly assigned to be received squatting exercise and PA mobilization sequentially with 5 days of wash out period. IKE and PTRA were not significantly different between the two groups after the intervention. All the outcome measures were arranged into two data groups; PA mobilization and squatting exercise data group. In the PA mobilization data group, IKE and PTRA significantly increased after the intervention, however, these aspects were decreased in the squatting exercise group. These findings suggest that IKE and PTRA increase immediately after PA mobilization, therefore PA mobilization could be a valuable topic for controlled clinical trials.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability analysis of the deep tendon reflex by using electromyography (EMG). Methods : The study was tested on 30 volunteers who are women in their 20s. Using an electronic reflective hammer of EMG, deep tendon reflex was measured on all subjects with the participation of three trained physical therapists as raters. First, the subjects were comfortably seated on a table with their knees bent at 90 °. The three raters tapped the electric hammer at intervals of 10 seconds to avoid habituation until a total of 10 compound muscle action potential records were collected. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated to assess the inter-rater reliability of the deep tendon reflex with the use of EMG. The items of analysis included amplitude (mV), latency (ms), duration (ms), and area (mV × ms) of the compound evoked potentials. Results : Based on the average records of 10 compound muscle action potential, excellent reliability (ICC: .912) was achieved in terms of area, and there was good reliability in terms of latency (ICC: .795) and duration (ICC: .800). In the shortest latency of the compound muscle action potential, good reliability was achieved in terms of amplitude (ICC: .865), duration (ICC: .781), and area (ICC: .832). In the amplitude of peak-to-peak of compound muscle action potential, excellent reliability was recorded in terms of amplitude (ICC: .924), and good reliability was recorded in terms of duration (ICC: .801) and area (ICC: .874). Conclusion : The findings in this study indicate that electromyography via an electric hammer is a reliable method of assessing and measuring deep tendon reflexes. Especially, it may be an excellent gauge in the area of average values of the compound muscle action potentials and the amplitude of peak-to-peak of compound muscle action potentials.
