  • In this paper, the classical Irons' patch tests which have been generally accepted for the convergence proof of a finite element are performed for Mindlin plate bending elements with a special emphasis on the nonconforming elements. The elements considered are 4-node and 8-node quadrilateral isoparametric elements which have been dominantly used for the analyses of plate bending problems. It was recognized from the patch tests that some nonconforming Mindlin plate elements pass all the cases of patch tests even though nonconforming elements do not preserve conformity. Then, the clues for the Mindlin plate element to pass the Irons' patch tests are investigated. Also, the convergent characteristics of some nonconforming Mindlin plate elements that do not pass the Irons' patch tests are examined by weak patch tests. The convergence tests are performed on the benchmark numerical problems for both nonconforming elements which pass the patch tests and which do not. Some conclusions on the relationship between the patch test and convergence of nonconforming Mindlin plate elements are drawn.

  • Anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities and skin irritation of piroxicam patch were investigated. Piroxicam patch increased the pain threshold in rat hind paw inflamed by carrageenan and inhibited writhing induced by acetic acid in mice. Piroxicam patch also inhibited the carrageenan-induced edema in rat hind paw as well as the increased vascular permeability induced by histamine in rats. In adjuvant arthritis of rats, piroxicam patch showed anti-inflammatory effects. Skin irritation of piroxicam patch was tested in Newzealand White rabbits and evaluated by Primary Irritation Index of Draize. The results from skin irritation test showed that piroxicam patch seemed practically non-irritating. The result from the present study indicates that piroxicam may be useful without serious side effects as anti-inflammatory analgesics in this patch form.

  • Clonidine, an antihypertensive drug, stimulates postsynaptic $\alpha_2$adrenergic receptors in the CNS and lowers arterial pressure by erects on both cardiac output and peripheral resistance. However, many patients experience that sedation and xerostomia occured upon oral administration of clonidine. These side effects are due to high plasma peak concentration and can be avoided when clonidine is given transdermally. In this study, we performed the skin irritation test for transdermal administration of clonidine patch on New Zealand white rabbits. Twelve New Zealand white rabbits were divided into two groups according to the dose levels, respectively. After transdermal administration of clonidine patch with two doses, clinical manifestations, body weight loss and postmortem findings were observed. We could not find any significant evidence of skin irritation by transdermal administration of clonidine patch.

  • Recently, a repair method by bonding patch plates is being applied to corroded steel structures. However, one of the issues of patch plate bonding repair is the brittle debonding of the patch plates. Generally, when the delamination of the patch plates occurs, the composite effect acting between the steel members and patch plates abruptly decreases. Therefore, to prevent the brittle debonding of the patch plates, a repair method combining an adhesive and stud bolts is proposed. Till date, tensile and compressive tests have been performed for the proposed method. In this study, plate bending tests were conducted to verify the effectiveness of this method under bending conditions. Furthermore, two types of epoxy resin-based adhesives were prepared to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method with different adhesive properties. The test results show that the proposed method is able to prevent the brittle debonding of the patch plates in the case of both epoxy resins.

  • Most of the industrial control network is an independent closed network, which is operated for a long time after installation, and thus the OS is not updated, so security threats increase and security vulnerabilities exist. The zero-day attack defense must be applied with the latest patch, but in a large-scale industrial network, it requires a higher level of real-time and non-disruptive operation due to the direct handling of physical devices, so a step-by-step approach is required to apply it to a live system. In order to solve this problem, utility-specific patch impact assessment is required for reliable patch application. In this paper, we propose a method to test and safely install the patch using the regression analysis technique and show the proven results. As a patch impact evaluation methodology, the maximum allowance for determining the safety of a patch was derived by classifying test types based on system-specific functions, performance, and behavior before and after applying the patch. Finally, we report the results of case studies applied directly to industrial control networks, the OS patch has been updated while ensuring 99.99% availability.

  • A previously proposed finite element formulation method is refined and modified to generate a new type of elements. The method is based on selecting a set of general solution modes for element formulation. The constant strain modes and higher order modes are selected and the formulation method is designed to ensure that the element will pass the basic single element test, which in turn ensures the passage of the basic patch test. If the element is to pass the higher order patch test also, the element stiffness matrix is in general asymmetric. The element stiffness matrix depends only on a nodal displacement matrix and a nodal force matrix. A symmetric stiffness matrix can be obtained by either modifying the nodal displacement matrix or the nodal force matrix. It is shown that both modifications lead to the same new element, which is demonstrated through numerical examples to be more robust than an assumed stress hybrid element in plane stress application. The method of formulation can also be used to arrive at the conforming displacement and hybrid stress formulations. The convergence of the latter two is explained from the point of view of the proposed method.
