  • The registration of Dongeuibogam as UNESCO's Memory of world was not only a national triumph but also an internationally important event. This event got rid of the opinions that suggested Dongeuibogam was a medical system practiced only un the limited area of Korea and this event signified the restoration of Dongeuibogam's international and universal position. Therefore, ih is now our job to find Dongeuibogam's modern applications and restore its value. This study was carried out with the purpose of examining the significance of Dongeuibogam's registration as Memory of world from a medical history's point of view and finding its modern applications. The author discussed significance in three parts of Past Significance, Present Significance and Future Significance. As for modern applications, the author reviewed currently used applications and considered the possible ways to restore its original value as an alternative for future medical science.

There are comparison, induction, observation, awnalysis, experience and synthesis in method of science. Firstly, comparative research is to ascertain the accumulated evidence. Secondly, we can compare with historical phenomenon. A research intend to verify the hypothesis based upon the sources of information. It is an available method to investigate the costumes and adornments in the past. Whatever the approach, the researcher much discribe the facts objectively. • This thesis mainly deals with how 'count of Ryang' was used in Joseon dynasty. Count of Ryang means how many purlins were used in the building with longitudinal section. As a result, the notion of Ryang in Joseon dynasty does not differ from now one. But the usages of that are slightly different to the present day. In Joseon dynasty, count of Ryang mainly was appeared with another word, count of Kan. Count of Kan has two meanings. One is the length, and the other is the area of building. When they used the count of Ryang combined with Kan, count of Kan had the meaning of length. By doing that, count of Ryang indicates the size of flank, count of Kan indicates the length of front. In the 19th century, count of Ryang looks similar to the past, but count of Kan shows another aspect. It did not indicate the length but the area of building. Through this study, although the usages of Ryang were different to the present, the concepts of Ryang were similar in Joseon dynasty.

  • 37 years old female was admitted with chief complaints of dyspnea on exertion and hemoptysis. Past history and family history were non-contributory. Physical examination showed Grade III systolic murmur at the apex, which transmitted to the back. E. K. G. and X-ray findings were compatible with the mitral insufficiency. With small size of Beall mitral valve, mitral valve replacement was done under the cardia-pulmonary bypass using hemodilution technic. Patient was tracheotomized after operation and assisted respiration was done for four weeks. Postoperatively, all signs were fine and patient walked around the ward without any difficulty, but she was in psychotic state. On postoperative 60th day, she complained of sudden dyspnea and on chest film, tracheal stenosis was found and recannulation of the tracheal tube was made. Thereafter, she was quite fine until postoperative 110th day when she, by berself, removed the tracheal cannula and died of asphyxia. Autopsy findings of the valve showed no thrombosis, no variance of the valve, and good endothelization of the valve cuffs. Asphyxia, due to removal of the tracheal connula by herself under psychotic state, was considered to be the cause of death in this patient who had tracheal stenosis after tracheostomy.

  • This lecture will begin by tracing some of the history behind techniques that we nowadays take for granted in the practice of embryo transfer, and in the application of the technique to various animal biotechnologies. It will be argued that an appreciation of such history can teach us a great deal about how we need to study and teach the subject, and about the best ways to conduct and finance the research that is essential to further progress. Examples in support of this argument will be taken from the changes that have occurred in the way embryos, particularly bovine embryos, have been collected, maintained in vitro, subjected to a variety of manipulations (sexing, division to produce identical animals, combination into chimeras, transfection with foreign genes), frozen and thawed, and transferred over the past 50 years. • For all the variety of past studies on the pyramids of Old Kingdom of Egypt, they still basically remain in 'enigma and mystery' as Giedion rightly puts in. This paper deals directly with the three most obvious facts about the pyramids : their cardinal orientation, the varying slopes, and above all, their magnitude. The prominent triangles of their once polished faces were there to be seen from the Nile valley as they shined or shaded under the Sun. The northern faces, especially, went in and out of the Sun in accordence with the seasonal variation of the solar declination, The steeper northern faces which turned into shade in high summer noon could have been warning signs of oncoming inundation of Nile, and the milder slopes that suddenly began to shine in some early spring noons could have been the vernal alarms to awaken the peasants to their timely toil on the fresh land. Dates and hours of insolation on the northern faces of pyramids are graphically and numerically computed.

  • Recently, new methods have been developed for estimating the current and recent changes in effective population sizes. Based on the methods, the effective population sizes of Korean populations were estimated using data from the Korean Association Resource (KARE) project. The overall changes in the population sizes of the total populations were similar to CHB (Han Chinese in Beijing, China) and JPT (Japanese in Tokyo, Japan) of the HapMap project. There were no differences in past changes in population sizes with a comparison between an urban area and a rural area. Age-dependent current and recent effective population sizes represent the modern history of Korean populations, including the effects of World War II, the Korean War, and urbanization. The oldest age group showed that the population growth of Koreans had already been substantial at least since the end of the 19th century.

  • Seamus Heaney, a famous Irish poet after Yeats, has written some pastoral lyrics from his experiences of farm life and childhood memories. These poems, in spite of his simple overt praise of a rustic farm life, have layers of meaning with their vast allusiveness and implications. He is an extremely literary writer dealing with history from the Celtic myth and a long English literary history. Though his style reminds that of a Victorian poet through his allusions of nature, he is a modern poet of innovative skills and senses. The explication of his representative sonnet sequence, the "Glanmore Sonnets" will reveal exquisite, complicated poetics of a modern poet. The poems are basically love poems, and the love is directed to his beloved wife, his lifetime companion. The poems relate the cultivation of a land to the poet's excavating language from the classics and to the images of love making. Through a careful reading of the sonnets this article will broaden our knowledge on how a modern love lyric of layered meanings can retain the past tradition in its complicated poetics.
