In this paper, we discuss the recent trends on the passive UHF RFID tag chip design techniques and several important system parameters. We also summarize link budget studies on both conventional and modem UHF RFID communications. The paper highlights the reverse link limited case, which has known to be the minor concern if reader continuous wave (CW) can reach the tag in sufficient level. This makes sense when the tag sensitivity is rather high (over 10-12${\mu}W$); however, since the tag chip fabrication technologies have been developed by time, the tag chip threshold levels are now less-dominant in determining link margin. If the tag limitation can be alleviated, the forward link limited case can be resolved; thus, we rather focus on the path-loss problem. Since the path-losses are still exist in both forward and reverse links, and it can be doubled while CW travels the reader-tag-reader path because forward link and reverse link are on the same distance. Consider if reader receiver sensitivity is very high in the worst case. In this case, weaken tag response (i.e., backscatters) cannot reach the level that reader receiver can process tag data; bit-error rate can be higher. Overall, backscatter levels should be high enough so that reader receiver can correctly function. After discussing link budget, we carried out practical measurements on fading effects between two circularly polarized UHF RFID antennas in a small scale area.

A passive RFID tag which received attention as a future technology for automatic and quick identification faces some difficulties about security problems such as tag authentication, reader authentication, data protection, and untraceability in addition to cost and reliable identification. A representative passive RFID technology is the ISO/IEC 18000-6 Type C which is an international standard for 900 MHz UHF-band. This standard has some difficulties in applying to the security services such as originality verification, tag's internal information protection, and untraceability, because it does not provide high-level security solution. In this paper, we summarize security requirements of ISO/IEC ITC 1/SC 31 international standardization group, propose security protocols suitable for the UHF-band passive RFID system using a crypto engine, and analyze its security strength. In addition, we verify that it is possible to implement a tag conforming with the proposed security protocols by presenting concrete command/response pairs and cryptographic method.
This study was conducted as a basic study for the selection of tags suitable for logistics management in the palletized unit-load unit and the development of various technologies to activate the palletized unit-load shipment of agricultural products through local APCs. Three types of passive RFID tags of UHF 900 MHz and one type of active RFID tag of 2.4 GHz band designed and manufactured through this study were used to analyze the receiving strength according to the tag's attachment location and distance of the palletized unit-load of agricultural products. In the passive RFID tag, there was a large difference in receiving strength by the tag's attachment location and a large amount of data loss depending on the distance within 30 m, whereas, in the active RFID tag, it was superior to the passive tags in terms of both receiving strength and data loss. Therefore, active tags are desirable from the perspective of multiple identification of warehouses with large spaces in relation to the application of RFID tags for palletized unit-loads of agricultural products, but the development of low-power technologies such as software wakeup power management as well as hardware to minimize battery power consumption is necessary.

In this paper, a dual-band antenna is proposed for the RF power harvester system as well as RFID tag. The proposed antenna operates as the passive and active RFID tag antenna in the UHF and microwave band, respectively. In addition, to charge the battery of an active RFID tag in the microwave band, it harvest the RF signal for tagging from the passive RFID tag antenna in the UHF band. The proposed antenna operates in the UHF band (917~923.5 MHz) and microwave band (2.4~2.45 GHz). In order to obtain the dual-band operation, the dipole structure and meander parasitic elements are proposed as the ${\lambda}/2$ and $1{\lambda}$ dipole antenna, respectively. The radiating dipole structure in the microwave band acts as the coupled feed for the meander parasitic elements in the UHF band. The impedance bandwidth (VSWR < 2) of the proposed antenna covers 917~923.5 MHz (UHF band) and 2.4~2.45 GHz (Microwave band). Measured total efficiencies are over 45 % in the UHF band and over 70 % in the microwave band. Peak gains are over 0.18 dBi and 2.8 dBi in the UHF and microwave band with an omni-directional radiation pattern, respectively.

The passive UHF RFID tags for item-level tagging are now explosively used in the supply chain and retail applications as they have several advantages, the two most relevant are cost and a longer read range. However, the signal interference problem between RFID tags and smart devices in real world is expected according to the smart-phone and tablet market growth together. The performance of RFID tags can be significantly less. The popular examples are the read-success rates and read range reduction. Especially, KT Corp. recently emphasized the serious signal interference at 900 MHz of LTE and old RFID frequencies through their public demonstration. By popular demands, this paper suggests the interference tolerance measurement method between the passive UHF RFID tag and the transmitted signal from a smart device. In addition, we selected three passive UHF RFID tags(Inlay) available on the market and quantitatively evaluated read range reduction results by interference signals using the PCR(Performance Change Rates) index. As a result, the LTE system is about three times as effective as the WCDMA system in terms of interference effects, and the read range performance of two RFID tags about 60 % drop.
In this letter, a small-sized ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID tag antenna for a medical sample tube is proposed. The RFID tag antenna is designed and fabricated based on the circular loop antenna used in the UHF band (Korea standard, 917 MHz to 923.5 MHz). The tag antenna size is reduced using a circular meander stub. The antenna has a physical size of 8 mm, which is about ${\lambda}$/40 in electrical length. The proposed tag antenna is molded into a medical sample and multitag identification is performed.

$0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS UHF RFID tag frontend is presented in this paper. Several key components are highlighted: the voltage multiplier based on the threshold voltage terminated circuit, the demodulator using current mode, and the clock generator. For standard compliance, all designed components are under the EPC Global Class-1 Generation-2 UHF RFID protocol. Backscatter modulation uses the pulse width modulation scheme. Overall performance of the proposed tag chip was verified with the evaluation board. Prototype Tag Chip dimension is neary 0.77mm2 ; According to the simulation results, the reader can successfully interrogate the tag within 1.5m. where the tag consumes the power about $71{\mu}W$.
An RFID system has been widely applied in many areas over the initial SCM application. In the literature enormous RFID applications in healthcare are documented to improve patient safety, patient/provider logistics, and the efficiency of collecting data. Based on the proposed 4-layered RFID system architecture, we introduce a case that implemented an UHF passive RFID-based tracking system in an outpatient clinic. Particularly, we propose a method to process RFID data that contains noise and missing reads. The proposed method for processing unreliable RFID data is capable to locate the tag accurately and provide additional business information. We finally conclude the paper with identifying obstacles and what is necessary to ensure system reliability.

In this paper, we examined the operating principle of a passive tag antenna for RFID system in UHF band. Based on the study, we proposed a novel RFID tag antenna which adopts the inductively coupled feeding structure to match antenna impedance to a capacitively loaded commercial tag chip. The proposed tag antenna consists of microstrip lines on a thin PET substrate for low-cost fabrication. The detail structure of the tag antenna were optimized using a full electromagnetic wave simulator of IE3D in conjunction with a Pareto genetic algorithm, and the size of the tag antenna can be reduced up to kr=0.27(2 cm2). We built some sample antennas and measured the antenna characteristics such as a return loss, an efficiency, and radiation patterns. The readable range of the tag antenna with a commercial RFID system showed about 1 to 3 m.

A UHF band RFID passive tag antenna, which can be attached on metallic objects, is proposed. The proposed tag antenna is more insensitive to the size of the metallic object than conventional PIFAs or IFAs. It is constructed on a multi-layer and its size is reduced by using a 'L' slit. Performances of the antenna is analyzed by Ansoft's HFSS and measured using a back-scattering method. The simulated and measured data are obtained with varying the size of metallic object.
