Cyclodxtrin homologues(CDs), produced by cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase(CGTase), were simultaneously partitioned in aqueous two-phase system(ATPS). Partition coefficients of CDs were measured in PEG/dextran systems. Phosphate, citrate, sulfate were tested as salt. ATPS of PEG/salt and PEG/dextran had the partition coefficients of the CDs, larger than unity. However, PEG/dextran system was observed better than PEG/salt as CGTase activity decreased sharply with salt concentration. Enzymatic rection occurred mainly in PEG-rich bottom phase because of the low partition coefficient of CGTase. The resulting CDs transferred to the PEG-rich top phase, obeying the diffusional partition. In the ATPS of 7% PEG(M.W.40, 000), 7mg/ml of CDs were obtained in top phase at 4.5 hours.

The diffusion and partition coefficients of polyurethane foam (PUF) are estimated using a microbalance experiment and small chamber test. The microbalance is used to measure sorption/desorption kinetics and equilibrium data. When the diffusion condition is controlled in the chamber of the sample, interactions between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and PUF can lead to the estimation of a relatively homogenous rate of mass transfer in the interiors and surfaces of PUF. The estimates of the material/air partition coefficient (K) and the material-phase diffusion coefficient (D) are shown to be independent of the concentrations of VOCs. This approach, if applied to a diffusion-controlled or physically-based model, can facilitate more precise prediction of their source/sink behavior. Although further research and more rigorous validation is needed, an emission model applied with the diffusion and partition coefficients from this research holds promise for the improvement of reliability in predicting the behavior of VOCs emitted from porous building materials by D and K.
Distribution coefficient ($K_d$) is an universal parameter estimating cadmium partition for a soil-water-crop system in agricultural lands. This study was performed to find some factors affecting soil-water partition coefficients for cadmium in some Korean soils. The distribution coefficients ($K_d$) of cadmium for the 15 series of agricultural soils were measured at quasi-steady state in the pH ranges from 2 to 11. The adsorption data of the selected soils showed a linear relationship between log $K_d$ and pH, which was well agreed with theoretically expected results ; $log\;K_d=0.6339pH+0.5532(r^2=0.70^{**})$. Normalization of the partition coefficients were performed in a range of pH 3.5 ~ 8.5 to minimize adverse effects of Al dissolution, cationic competition, and organic matter dissolution. The $K_d$-om, partition coefficients normalized for organic matter, improved this linearity to the pH of soils. The values of $K_d$-om measured from the field samples were significantly correlated with those of $K_d$ predicted from the sorption-edge experimental data ($r^2=0.68^{**}$).
The effects of pH and added salts on the partition coefficients of proteins in a polyethylene glycol)-dextran aqueous two-phase system were investigated. The partition coefficients attained the lowest value at the isoelectric point of proteins in an equal volume aqueous two-phase system containing 5% PEG and 9.5% dextran in 5 mM phosphate buffer solution. The coefficients increased dramatically at pH 11; BSA which had highest effective hydrophobicity marked 50-fold increase, while ${\beta}-lactoglobulin$ and ovalbumin which had low hydrophobicity 10-fold increase, respectively. The effect of added salts varied with the pH. The partition coefficient increased by the addition of salt at pH 3.0 but decreased drastically at pH 7.0. The partition coefficient increased in the order of added Li < Na < K at pH 3.0 and decreased in the order of added Li < Na < K at pH 11.0.

This paper is concerned with the heat flux distribution and energy partition for creep-feed grinding. From measurements of transient grinding temperatures in the workpiece sub-surface using an embedded thermocouple, the overall energy partition to the workpiece was estimated from moving heat source theory for a triangular heat flux distribution as 3.0% for down grinding and 4.5% for up grinding. The higher energy partition for up grinding can be attribute to the need to satisfy thermal compatibility at the grinding zone. The influence of cooling outside the grinding zone can be analytically taken into account by specifying convective heat transfer coefficients on the workpiece surface ha ahead of the heat source (grinding zone) and hb behind the heat source. The smaller energy partition together with slightly lower grinding power favors down grinding over up grinding.

This paper propose a new design of fuzzy neural networks based on hard partition to generate the rules of the networks. For this we use hard c-means (HCM) clustering algorithm. The premise part of the rules of the proposed networks is realized with the aid of the hard partition of input space generated by HCM clustering algorithm. The consequence part of the rule is represented by polynomial functions. And the coefficients of the polynomial functions are learned by BP algorithm. The number of the hard partition of input space equals the number of clusters and the individual partitioned spaces indicate the rules of the networks. Due to these characteristics, we may alleviate the problem of the curse of dimensionality. The proposed networks are evaluated with the use of numerical experimentation.
The containment retardation capacities of four different aquifers were evaluated in a preliminary study for development of bank filtration in the Young San river area. $NO_3-N$, $NO_2-N$, $NH_4^+-N$, Fe, Mn, phenol, and chloride were selected as the target contaminants and a nonreactive tracer, respectively. Batch isotherm tests were conducted to measure the partition coefficients of the target contaminants. The mass transport parameters of nonreactive tracer were estimated from column tests. From the results of bath isotherm tests, it was shown that lower stream aquifer materials have greater partition coefficients of $NO_3-N$, $NH_4^+-N$, Mn, and phenol than the upper stream aquifer materials; however, there was no significant position-dependent trend for Fe. All aquifer materials tested have the same range of partition coefficients for $NO_2-N$. Column tests showed that the molecular diffusion of Cl- was much less than the mechanical dispersion; and there was no significant difference between the estimated dispersivities of tested aquifer materials. Consequently, it seems that the difference in the containment retardation capacities between four aquifers tested in this study would primarily result not from hydrodynamic dispersion but from partitioning.

In this paper, we propose a new embedded image compression scheme which uses rate-distortion optimized block coding of wavelet coefficients. Unlike to previous works in which set-partition or block-partition is performed according to the magnitude of wavelet coefficients, the proposed scheme achieves rate-distortion optimization by sorting wavelet coefficients or blocks according to their expected rate-distortion slope. At the same time, it performs the optimized block-partition coding using the expected rate-distortion slope of blocks. The proposed scheme also uses various relationship of wavelet coefficients for the entropy coding. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed image compression scheme provides better overall performance than the existing embedded coding schemes such as SPIHT and EBCOT, in which the PSNR gains of the proposed scheme are about 0.11~1.16dB and -0.18~0.52dB, respectively.
