Integrated Nano Optoelectronics

  • Si:Ge alloy semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) offer challenging opportunities for integrated optoelectronics/optoplasmonics, since they potentially allow unprecedentedly strong light-matter interaction in the wavelength range of the optical communication. In this talk, we discuss the recent research efforts of my laboratory to develop optoelectronic components based on individual group IV NCs. We present experimental demonstration of the individual NC optoelectronic devices, including broadband Si:Ge nanowire (NW) photodetectors, intra NW p-n diodes, Ge NC electrooptical modulators and near-field plasmonic NW detectors, where the unique size effects at the nanometer scales commonly manifest themselves. In particular, we demonstrated a scanning photocurrent imaging technique to investigate dynamics of photocarriers in individual Si:Ge NWs, which provides spatially and spectrally resolved local information without ensemble average. Our observations represent inherent size-effects of internal gain in semiconductor NCs, thereby provide a new insight into nano optoplasmonics.

Why Prepositional Stranding Was So Restricted in Old English

  • The displacement of the prepositional object from PP (DPO) was strictly prohibited in Old English (OE). No matter how such a prohibition is theoretically analyzed, it seems clear that OE had some sort of constraint against DPO. In this paper, I address the issue of what motivated the constraint by explaining what made DPO so difficult in OE. In particular, on the basis of the discussion about relative obliqueness among OE NP arguments, I propose that what was behind the constraint is both a high degree of obliqueness of OE prepositional arguments, which was rigidly marked and represented by the preposition as an obliqueness marker, and the representation and maintenance of relative obliqueness among OE NP arguments.

기능적 전기 자극에 의한 족관절 근육 반응 (Reaction of Ankle Muscles by Functional Electrical Stimulation)

  • This paper deals with an experimental study on the reaction of muscles by functional electrical stimulation(FES) with the design and fabrication of an ankle reaction apparatus. The ankle reaction apparatus consists of a circuit part and a kinematic part, and it monitors reaction time for a particular angle of joint rotation according to FES. The experimental results showed that the change of the ankle rotation angle was linearly proportional to the change of the magnitude of FES. It also showed that the muscle's reaction time was constant no matter how large the magnitude of the stimulus. The results of this paper can be applied to develop an active-type walking-assistance robot.

Measuring Timing Properties of PSR B0540-69

  • Neutron stars (NS) are rapidly spinning compact objects. Their rotation energy is released by particles, electromagnetic waves, and even gravitational waves. The source of the energy is of course the rotation, so by studying the rotational properties of neutron stars, we can gain some insights into matter under extreme conditions. In particular, it is known that the braking index n is sensitive to the moment of inertia and/or NS winds. The neutron star PSR B0540-69 exhibits interesting timing behavior; previous measurements of the braking index for this pulsar may suggest a change in time. In order to see if the change is real, We investigate the timing properties of B0540-69 using recent ~1000-days Swift satellite data.

Does Fake News Matter to Election Outcomes? The Case Study of Taiwan's 2018 Local Elections

  • Fake news and disinformation provoked heated arguments during Taiwan's 2018 local election. Most significantly, concerns grew that Beijing was attempting to sway the island's politics armed with a new "Russian-style influence campaign" weapon (Horton, 2018). To investigate the speculated effects of the "onslaught of misinformation," an online survey with 1068 randomly selected voters was conducted immediately after the election. Findings confirmed that false news affected Taiwanese voters' judgment of the news and their voting decisions. More than 50% of the voters cast their votes without knowing the correct campaign news. In particular, politically neutral voters, who were the least able to discern fake news, tended to vote for the China-friendly Kuomintang (KMT) candidates. Demographic analysis further revealed that female voters tended to be more likely to believe fake news during the election period compared to male voters. Younger or lower-income voters had the lowest levels of discernment of fake news. Further analyses and the implications of these findings for international societies are deliberated in the conclusion.

각 분해능 광전자 분광기법을 활용한 그래핀 물성 연구 (Angle-resolved photoemission study on novel properties of graphene)

  • The research field of graphene has been rapidly expanded ever since its first experimental realization of Dirac fermions in 2005, due to the fundamental importance in physics as a new paradigm for relativistic condensed matter physics as well as a potential building block for next generation device applications. Most of the intriguing physics observed so far in graphene can be traced to its peculiar electron band structure, which is in analogy with relativistic Dirac fermions. This article reviews recent progress in graphene research that has been done using angle-resolved photoemission technique, the most direct probing tool of the electron band structure. In particular, we discuss a few examples of novel properties so far explored ranging from the basic electron band structure to complicated many-body interactions.

모사 이동층 크로마토그래피 (Simulated Moving Bed [SMB])

  • Chromatography has been a method of choice in the separation of complex biological mixtures for the analytical purpose in particular for the last half of century. In current years, chromatographic method extends its use to the preparative separation where the productivity per resin amount and solvent use become a matter of concern. Recently, simulated moving bed (SMB) method which claims high separation efficiency of the ideal counter-current moving bed chromatography has become a workhorse of preparative separation. SMB technology was developed in the early 1960s for large-scale hydrocarbon separation by UOP and approximately 120 Sorbex units have been licensed to date. Recently, SMB separation technology has been successfully extended from hydrocarbons and sugars to fine chemicals, particularly biochemicals, from laboratory to pilot to production plant. In this paper, the current status of SMB and its modifications were reviewed.

Study of Weak Astrophysical Shock Waves using a PIC Code

  • Shock waves are ubiquitous in astrophysical environments. In particular, shocks formed by merger of subclumps, infall of matter and internal flow motion in intracluster media (ICMs) and cluster outskirts are relatively weak with Mach number M ${\lesssim}$ a few. At such weak shocks, it has been believed that the diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) of cosmic rays is rather inefficient. Yet, the presence of nonthermal phenomena, such as radio halos and relics, suggests that contrary to the expectation, DSA as well as magnetic field amplification should operate at weak shocks in cluster environments. We recently initiated a study of weak, collisionless, astrophysical shocks using a PIC(Particle-in-Cell) code. The PIC code describes the motion of electron and ion particles under the electromagnetic field which is represented in grid zones. Here, we present a preliminary work of one-dimensional simulations. We show how shocks are set up as the turbulent electromagnetic field is developed in the shock transition layer, and discuss the implication on DSA and magnetic field amplification.

  • Recently, the matter controlling lateral drift is important in high rise buildings, In particular, seismic control dampers, such as mass damper and hysteretic damper, are emerging in the field of actively reducing drift. But. seismic control dampers have weak points with the lack of quantitative analysis and maintenance of the device. Accordingly, in this study we examine the structural characteristic of Steel Elasto-Plastic Hysteretic Damper, which is needless of maintenance, and then consider the basic conditions in the design and construction of the optimal seismic control effect which uses this device.

  • This study aims to categorize articles in terms of childrearing focused on health and hygiene in Chosun-ilbo and Donga-ilbo in 1920s. As part of this aim we will look into the role of mothers reflected within these articles. Content analysis was used to accomplish the specific objectives of this study. All these articles emphasized the prudent role of mothers and pointed to the fact that holistic knowledge was needed to perform the role of a mother effectively. In other words, mothers had to know about child disease, hygiene, breast milk, nutrition, food, snacks, sleep, exercise and security. Interestingly, the most important matter emphasized in these articles was hygiene. In 1920s, the role of mothers in generally family life was held in high regards in Korean society. In particular, their role within the framework of young children’s health and hygiene was emphasized.
