  • This study aims at finding the closest packings of regular shape particles such as sphere, circle rod and hexagonal rod type. As the ratio of particle size to container lowered to less than 1/10, the wall effect decreased gradually. The tap density of spherical particles with almost orthorhombic arrangement was 59.5%, while those of circle rod and hexagonal rod type particles were 63.5% and 63.0% respectively. And it was decreased with increasing the aspect ratio of regular particles. The tap density of binary mixtures was larger than that corresponding to the monosized particles packing by about 15%. The tap density of ternary mixtures was larger than that of corresponding to the packing of binary mixtures by about 9%. This work employed the binary mixture of 60% coarse particles and 40% fine particles with size ratio of 1.0 to 1/10 and the ternary mixture of 60% coarse particles, 20% medium and 20% fine particles with size ratio of 1:1/10:1/400 respectively.

  • From the formation of the monodispersed silica particle which is a valuable for the industry by Sol-Gel process, the effects of the parameters participated in the process, the growth mechanism and the characteristics of silica particles for each rection conditions are investigated. To investigate about the formation of final silica particles, the suspension which performs the polymerization is reacted with molybdic acid, and the evolutions of TEOS and silica particle size are investigated in the reaction time ? 새 the characteristics of molybdic acid with the suspension. From the results, a constant number of silica particle is formed at early reaction stage. Silica particles grow through the aggregation of smaller particles and nucleation is rate-limiting step for the growth of particles. In the conditions of this study, spherical silica particles are formed, [NH$_3$] and [$H_2O$] concentration increase the particle size but particle size decrease with [$H_2O$] concentration which is a certain above region. Average particle sizes are 187.4~483.3 nm and standard deviations in the average particle size are 1.7~2.9% with each experimental condition. From the BET results, specific surface area is 5.5~23.4 $m^2$/g and these values decrease with increase size. The average pore size is 50~70$\AA$.

  • This study aims to investigate the applicability of Sd/StFFF and to develop a method for size characterization of urban airborne particles, focusing primarily on particles larger than about 1 mm. It was found that the airborne concentration vary with time, although no particular seasonal trend was observed. When averaged over time, the airborne concentration was the lowest in the park areas with 99 ㎍/m³. The apartment, industrial, and central city area showed similar levels of the airborne concentrations with 166, 170, and 171 ㎍/m³, respectively. The housing area showed the highest airborne concentration with 201 μg/m³ among all tested areas. A power-programmed Sd/StFFF was used for size analysis of airborne particles with the initial field strength of 300 rpm, $t_a$ = 4, $t_i$ = -16, p = 8, and the flow rate of 7 mL/min. It was found that urban airborne samples were mostly populated by particles having diameters between about 5 to 20 ㎛, although all have broad size distributions ranging up to about 50 ㎛. Under the Sd/StFFF condition used in this study, no significant differences were found in size distributions among the airborne particles collected at different urban sites, and also among those collected at different times.

  • Soils are natural granular materials whose mechanical properties differ according to the size and composition of the particles, so soils exhibit an obvious scale effect. Traditional soil mechanics is based on continuum mechanics, which can not reflect the impact of particle size on soil mechanics. On that basis, a matrix-reinforcing-particle cell model is established in which the reinforcing particles are larger-diameter sand particles and the matrix comprises smaller-diameter bentonite particles. Since these two types of particles deform differently under shear stress, a new shear-strength theory under direct shear that considers the stress concentration and bypass phenomena of the matrix is established. In order to verify the rationality of this theory, a series of direct shear tests with different reinforcing particle diameter and volume fraction ratio are carried out. Theoretical analysis and experimental results showed that the interaction among particles of differing size and composition is the basic reason for the size effect of soils. Furthermore, the stress concentration and bypass phenomena of the matrix enhance the shear strength of a soil, and the volume ratio of reinforcing particles has an obvious impact on the shear strength. In addition, the newly proposed shear-strength theory agrees well with experimental values.

  • For the purpose of preparation of monodispersed spherical zinc oxide fine particles, an experimental research on the preparation of zinc oxide particles from zinc salts solutions by high temperature precipitation reaction was performed. Zinc oxide particles were precipitated from all the precipitation solutions tested if the precipitation temperature was higher than 60$^{\circ}$. As the precipitation temperature Increased until 80$^{\circ}$, the average particle diameter of zinc oxide particles decreased and the narrower particle size distribution were obtained. Spherical zinc oxide fine particles with relatively narrow particle size distribution were precipitated from the ZnSO$_4$ solutions with NaOH as precipitant. Final pH of precipitation solution had an effect on the amount of zinc oxide precipitated, but had no effect on the their particle size or size distribution.

  • Highly crosslinked micron-size monodispersed PMMA/PDVB and PS/PDVB particles were prepared using seeded multi-stage emulsion polymerization. PMMA and PS seed particles were synthesized by seeded multi-stage emulsion polymerization and soap-free emulsion polymerization. Then PMMA/PDVB and PS/PDVB particles were obtained using semi-batch type emulsion polymerized using divinyl benzene as a cross-linkable monomer in the presence of seed particles. PMMA particles with size of ca. 730 nm and polydispersity of 1.03 were successfully prepared in this experiment. PS particles with size of ca. 1.5 ${\mu}m$ and polydispersity of 1.01 were prepared in this experiment. Highly crosslinked PS/PDVB particles with size of ca. 1.3 ${\mu}m$ and polydispersity of 1.00 were obtained.

  • Nano-Sized TiO$_2$ particles with diameter between 2 and 5 nm are synthesized in Water/Triton X-100/n-Hexane microemulsion. Particles show the amorphous structure and partially hydroxide form. The optical absorbance of particles appears at 250nm and band edge at 340nm. Gold metal is deposited on the surface of TiO$_2$ particles by reduction reaction of Au(III) ion with sodium hypophosphite. The size of gold-deposited particles is 20nm, and the optical absorbance appears at 270nm and at 550nm. So particles show the red color. The dense precipitation is formed by aggregation in the TiO$_2$ nano-sized particles of about 5nm size. But the bulky precipitation is formed by agglomeration phenomena in the gold-deposited particles of 20nm size. And also gold-deposited particles is easily dispersed by being re-dispersed in PEG/Water solution. This study has compared those things measuring the SPF characteristics of the cosmetics made of the synthesized particles. If the particle size is controlled appropriately, then the SPF value will be higher, or more colorless cosmetics will be made.

  • In this study, different types and shapes of various particles produced on the asphalt pavement road were analyzed. Road dust at a bus stop was collected and was separated as per their sizes by using a sieve shaker. Tire-road wear particles (TRWPs), asphalt pavement wear particles (APWPs), mineral particles, plant-related particles, glass beads, glass particles, road paint wear particles, plastic particles, and fibers were observed herein. The types and shapes of the particles varied depending on their sizes. TRWPs larger than 500 ㎛ were not observed. TRWPs with a size of 212-500 ㎛ were rarely present, but many TRWPs with a size smaller than 212 ㎛ were observed. APWPs were observed for whole-particle sizes of below 1,000 ㎛. A variety of particles on the road would lead to lower friction between the tires and the road, thereby increasing the braking distance of vehicles. Most of the particles include mineral particles, glass particles, and APWPs with rough surfaces. Therefore, the abrasion of the tire tread would accelerate owing to friction with the tough particles.

  • In order to understand the characteristics of fine particles emitted from coal-fired power plant stacks, it is important to analyze the size distribution and components of particles. In this study, particle size distributions were measured using the ejector-porous tube dilution device and an ELPI system at a stack in a coal-fired power plant. Main elemental components of particles in each size interval were also identified through TEM-EDS analysis for the particles collected in each ELPI stage. Particle size distributions based on number and mass were analyzed with component distributions from 0.006 to 10 ㎛. The highest number concentration was about 0.01 ㎛. The main component of the particles consisted of sulfur, which indicated that sulfate aerosols were generated by gas-to-particle conversion of SO2. In a mass size distribution, a mono-modal distribution with a mode diameter of about 2 ㎛ was shown. For the components of PM1.0 (particles less than 1 ㎛), the abundance order was F > Mg > S > Ca, and however, for the components of PM10 (particles less than 10 ㎛), it was in the order of Fe > S > Ca > Mg. The elemental components by particle size were confirmed.

  • Europium doped yttrium oxide submicron-sized particles were prepared by ultrasonic aerosol pyrolysis. To examine the size effect of submicron-sized-particle, the photoluminescence of the particles was investigated. The particle size was controlled by pH, reaction temperature, molar concentration of yttrium in precursor solution. The PL intensity of submicron-sized particles was decreased with particles size. When the particle size is above about 150 times of Bohr radius of Y$_2$O$_3$, the optical property of the particles shows the bulk characteristics.
