In the free molecular flow range, the pumping performance of a turbomolecular pump has been predicted by calculation of the transmission probability employing the integral method and the test particle Monte-Carlo method. The velocities of molecules incident upon a moving blade are given by the random numbers, which are sampled from the Maxwell molecular velocity distribution function. The present results agree quantitatively with the previous known numerical results. For a multi-stage pump, the velocity profile of molecules between two blade rows is not Maxwell distribution. In this case, the Monte-Carlo method is employed to calculate the overall transmission probability for the entire set of blade rows. When the results of the approximate method combining the single stage solutions are compared with those of the Monte-Carlo method for the pump having six rows at C=0.6, the approximate method overestimates as much as 36% in the maximum compression ratio and 19% in the maximum pumping speed than does the Mote-Carlo method.
Pigment red 53:1 is a dye used in various products as a component of the inks, suspected of being carcinogenic. Thus, the environmental and occupational issues related to it are important. The enzyme-based approach with reusability has advantages to consume less energy and generate less harsh side- products compared to the conventional strategies including separations, microbe, and electrochemical treatment. The degradation of Pigment red 53:1 by the lignin peroxidase immobilized on the surface of magnetic particles has been studied. The immobilization of the peroxidase was conducted on magnetic particle surface with the treatment of polyethyleneimine, glutaraldehyde, and the peroxidase, in sequence. The immobilization was confirmed using X-ray photon spectroscopy. The absorbance peak of the pigment was monitored at 495 nm of UV/Vis spectrum with respect to time to calculate the catalytic activities of the pigment for the immobilized lignin peroxidase. For the comparison, the absorbance of the lignin peroxidase free in solution was also monitored. The catalytic rate constant values for the free lignin peroxidases and the immobilized those were 0.51 and $0.34min^{-1}$, respectively. The reusable activity for the immobilized lignin peroxidase was kept to 92% after 10 cycles. The stabilities for heat and storage were also investigated for both cases.
The free-surface motions interacting with structures are investigated numerically using the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method proposed by Koshizuka et al. (1996) for solving incompressible flow. In the method, Lagrangian moving particles are used instead of Eulerian approach using grid system. Therefore the terms of time derivatives in Navier-Stokes equation can be directly calculated without any numerical diffusion or instabilities due to the fully Lagrangian treatment of fluid particles and topological failure never occur. The MPS method is applied to the numerical study on the fluid impact loads for wet-drop tests in a LNG tank, and the results are compared with experimental ones.
In the free molecular flow range, the pumping performance of a turbomolecular pump has been predicted by calculation of the transmission probability which employs the integral method and the test particle Monte-Carlo method. Also, new approximate method combining the double stage solutions, so called double-approximation, is presented here. The calculated values of transmission probability for the single stage agree quantitatively with the previous known numerical results. For a six-stage pump, the Monte-Carlo method is employed to calculate the overall transmission probability for the entire set of blade rows. When the results of the approximate method combining the single stage solutions are compared with those of the Monte-Carlo method at dimensionless blade velocity ratio C=0.4, the previous known approximate method overestimates as much as 34% than does the Monte-Carlo method. But, the new approximate method gives more accurate results, whose relative error is 10% compared to the Monte-Carlo method, than does the previous approximate method.
We systematically investigated the optical properties of sub-micron sized methylammonium lead tribromide ($CH_3NH_3PbBr_3$) cubes in the range of 100 to 700 nm, which were prepared by a surfactant-free precipitation method. We found that despite the strong absorbance, their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is very low as 0.009~0.011 % for whole range of sizes. Surfactant-free synthesis approach results in nanocubes that has no surface passivating reagents (e.g. surfactants) on their surface. As-prepared particles contain a large number of surface defects that may cause the low PLQY. The role of the surface defects were investigated in their photoluminescence decay process, which can be correlated with the particle size. Larger particles are characterized by a slower decay rate compared to smaller particles due to a large number of surface defects in the smaller particles that trap more excitons in the fluorescence decay process. These experimental results provide new insights into the fundamental relationship between surface state and optical properties.
This paper presents a new collison-free trajectory problem for SCARA robot manipulator. we use artificial potential field for collison detection and avoidance. The potential function is typically defined as the sum of attractive potential pulling the robot toward the goal configuration and a repulsive potential pushing the robot away from the obstacles. In here, end-effector of manipulator is represented as a particle in configuration space and moving obstacles is simply represented, too. we consider not fixed obstacle but moving obstacle in random. So, we propose new distance function of artificial potential field with moving obstacle for SCARA robot. At every sampling time, the artificial potential field is update and the force driving manipulator is derived from the gradient vector of artificial potential field. To real-time path planning, we apply very simple modeling to obstacle. Some simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
In this study, a 3D numerical model was used to predict nonlinear wave forces on a cylindrical pile installed in a shallow water region. The model was based on solving the viscous and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for a two-phase flow (water and air) model and the volume of fluid method for treating the free surface of water. A new application was developed based on the cut-cell method to allow easy installation of complicated obstacles (e.g., bottom geometry and cylindrical pile) in a computational domain. Free-surface elevation, water particle velocities, and inline wave forces were calculated, and the results show good agreement with experimental data obtained by the Danish Hydraulic Institute. The simulation results revealed that the proposed model can, without the use of empirical formulas (i.e., Morison equation) and additional wave analysis models, reliably predict non-linear wave forces on an offshore wind turbine foundation installed in a shallow water region.
Silicon carbide (SiC) has recently drawn an enormous amount of industrial interest due to its useful mechanical properties, such as its thermal resistance, abrasion resistance and thermal conductivity at high temperatures. In this study, RF thermal plasma (PL-35 Induction Plasma, Tekna CO., Canada) was utilized for the synthesis of high-purity SiC powder from an organic precursor (hexamethyldisilazane, vinyltrimethoxysilane). It was found that the SiC powders obtained by the RF thermal plasma treatment included free carbon and amorphous silica ($SiO_2$). The SiC powders were further purified by a thermal treatment and a HF treatment, resulting in high-purity SiC nano-powder. The particle diameter of the synthesized SiC powder was less than 30 nm. Detailed properties of the microstructure, phase composition, and free carbon content were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), a thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, according to the and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area from N2 isotherms at 77 K.
PURPOSES : The applicability of the mechanics-based similarity concept (suggested by Feng et al.) for determining scaled variables, including length and load, via laboratory-scale tests and discrete element analysis, was evaluated. METHODS: Several studies on the similarity concept were reviewed. The exact scaling approach, a similarity concept described by Feng, was applied in order to determine an analytical solution of a free-falling ball. This solution can be considered one of the simplest conditions for discrete element analysis. RESULTS : The results revealed that 1) the exact scaling approach can be used to determine the scale of variables in laboratory tests and numerical analysis, 2) applying only a scale factor, via the exact scaling approach, is inadequate for the error-free replacement of small particles by large ones during discrete element analysis, 3) the level of continuity of flowable materials such as SCC and cement mortar seems to be an important criterion for evaluating the applicability of the similarity concept, and 4) additional conditions, such as the kinetics of particle, contact model, and geometry, must be taken into consideration to achieve the maximum radius of replacement particles during discrete element analysis. CONCLUSIONS : The concept of similarity is a convenient tool to evaluate the correspondence of scaled laboratory test or numerical analysis to physical condition. However, to achieve excellent correspondence, additional factors, such as the kinetics of particles, contact model, and geometry, must be taken into consideration.

We considered qualitative behaviour of the generalization of Einstein's model of Brownian motion when the key parameter of the time interval of free jump degenerates. Fluids will be characterised by number of particles per unit volume (density of fluid) at point of observation. Degeneration of the phenomenon manifests in two scenarios: a) flow of the fluid, which is highly dispersing like a non-dense gas and b) flow of fluid far away from the source of flow, when the velocity of the flow is incomparably smaller than the gradient of the density. First, we will show that both types of flows can be modeled using the Einstein paradigm. We will investigate the question: What features will particle flow exhibit if the time interval of the free jump is inverse proportional to the density and its gradient ? We will show that in this scenario, the flow exhibits localization property, namely: if at some moment of time t0 in the region, the gradient of the density or density itself is equal to zero, then for some T during time interval [t0, t0 + T] there is no flow in the region. This directly links to Barenblatt's finite speed of propagation property for the degenerate equation. The method of the proof is very different from Barenblatt's method and based on the application of Ladyzhenskaya - De Giorgi iterative scheme and Vespri - Tedeev technique. From PDE point of view it assumed that solution exists in appropriate Sobolev type of space.
