  • Adsorption of phenol on activated carbon in a fixed bed was studied. The effects of fixed-bed length, superficial velocity (flow rate) and particle size of adsorbent on fixed-bed performance were investigated. Some characteristic parameters such as the breakthrough time ($t_{0.05}$), saturation time ($t_{0.95}$), length of mass transfer zone ($L_{MTZ}$), adsorptive capacity (W), and adsorption rate constant ($K_a$) were derived from the breakthrough curves. Adsorbent particle sizes significantly affected the shape of the breakthrough curve. Larger particle sizes resulted in an earlier breakthrough, a longer $L_{MTZ}$ and a lower adsorption rate. Superficial velocity was a critical factor for the external mass transfer during fixed-bed adsorption process. The external mass transfer resistance was dominant as increasing superficial velocity.

  • The experiment in this study was conducted as a part of an effort to evaluate filter performance with pilot-filters consisting of one mono-media and two dual-media columns. Particle distribution analysis using a particle counter is more sensitive and better than turbidity analysis in observing particle detachments and a breakthrough. In sand media filters having 1.5 m of available head, caution is needed in the head loss of the late stages of filtration, and for dual-media filters, appropriate media configuration and effluent Quality monitoring should be used for preventing the final breakthrough. Also the time of particle breakthrough in the dual media filter can be deferred by increasing bed depth, and it is necessary to use a filtration aid prior to filtration to prevent breakthrough of these intermediate sized particles in high filtration rate.

  • Particle breakthrough can occur by either the breakoff of previously captured particles (or flocs) or the direct passage of some influent particles through the filter. Filtration experiments were performed in a laboratory-scale filter using spherical glass beads with a diameter of 0.55 mm as collectors. A single type of particle suspension (Min-U-Sil 5, nearly pure $SiO_2$) and three different destabilization methods (pH control, alum and polymer destabilization) were utilized. The operating conditions were similar to those of standard media filtration practice: a filtration velocity of 5 m/h. To assess the possibility of particle detachment during the normal filtration, a hydraulic shock load (20% increase of flow rate) was applied after 4 hours of normal filtration. The magnitude of particle detachment was proportional to the particle size for non-Brownian particles. At the same time, less favorable particles, i.e., particles with larger surface charge, were easily detached during the hydraulic shock load. Therefore, proper particle destabilization before filtration is crucial for maximum particle removal as well as minimum particle breakthrough.

  • The influencing factors to remove phosphate were evaluated by converter slag (CS). Experiments were performed by batch tests using different CS sizes and column test. Solutions were prepared at the different pH and concentrations. The maximum removal efficiency was obtained over 98% with the finest particle size, $CS_a$ within 2 hours in batch tests. The removal efficiency was increased in the order of decreasing size with same amount of CS for any pH of solutions. The adsorption data were well fitted to Freundlich isotherm. From the column experiment, the specific factors were revealed that the breakthrough removal capacity (BRC) $x_b/m_{cs}$, was decreased by increasing the influent concentration. The breakthrough time, tb was lasted shorter as increasing the influent concentration. The pH drop simultaneously led to lower BRC drop during the experimental hours. The relation between the breakthrough time and the BRC to influent concentration was shown in the logarithmic decrease. Results suggested that the large surface area of CS possessed a great potential for adsorptive phosphate removal. Consequently particle size and initial concentration played the major influencing factors in phosphate removal by converter slag.

  • For this study, an online particle counter was installed before and after the activated carbon filtration process of D water treatment plant where has advanced water treatment processes, produces average 900,000ton/day of drinking water and supply the produced drinking water to Busan citizens. We collected and analyzed particle count data for about 1 year. We inspected particle breakthrough in three out of sixteen filter processes operated at same conditions, i.e. 5th filter, 6th filter and 7th filter. According to the monitoring results, 6th and 7th filters showed similar results while 5th filter showed different results. When compared seasonal effect, the particle count for dry season was below 10 particles/ml while the particle count for August when monthly average rainfall is over 200mm was much higher than for dry season. In January and August, there was a difference in breakthrough particle size. In January, small particles in 2~3um were mainly detected while in August 10um particles were mainly detected and the size distribution was 40% of total count.

  • To prevent turbidity breakthrough in a depth filter caused by hydraulic shock loads, influence of turbidity and particle number in filtrate by variation of operating filter number depending on inflow change was investigated. Inflow quantity at the S water treatment plant (WTP) was varied and ratio of maximum/minimum inflow quantity was 2.2, therefore filtration velocity was also subsequently changed. The S WTP changed operating filter number depending on inflow variation to minimize change of filtration velocity. Particle breakthrough was not severe when operation system was changed, out-of-operation and re-start of filter was repeated depending on inflow quantity. Slight particle breakthrough was noticed when re-start of filter was implemented at the filter that had a cumulative filtration run time of less than 10 h or more than 50 h. This can be attributed to the inadequate ripening and over accumulation of particles on media. Therefore, it is more efficient to choose a re-starting filter basin which has cumulative filtration run time more than 10 h or less than 50 h to reduce particle breakthrough. Filter number variation depending on inflow change was proven to be a method for improvement of unit filter run volume (UFRV).

  • Particle removal is an important step taken at water treatment plants (WTPs) for the safety of tap water due to its proportionality to the pathogen inactivation. Government promulgated a treatment technique for the optimization of filtration including continuous turbidity monitoring using on-line turbidimeters. Based on the turbidity measurements of 460 filters at 31 WTPs operated by K-water, the evaluation of filtration performance and the investigation of major causes related to particle breakthrough were explored. 98.1 % of the filters had an effluent turbidity measurement which was less than 0.1 NTU, but turbidity breakthrough of more than 0.3 NTU was noticed occasionally which is in violation of AWWA 5-Star guidelines. It was shown that the optimization of coagulation, filter-to-waste, the observance of optimal filtration velocity and backwashing process based on filtrate turbidity were crucial for the improvement of filtrate.

  • This study evaluated the availability as an alternative adsorbent which is cheaper and more efficient than CuO/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$ which have been studing vigorously to remove $SO_2$. Five adsorbents (CuO/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$, Iron ore, Slag, LD slag, $Fe_2O_3$) was employed in a fixed bed reactor. $SO_2$ breakthrough curves were obtained as a function of temperature, initial gas velocity and particle size. Saturation capacities calculated by the numerical integration of breakthrough curves of $SO_2$ increased with increasing reaction temperature. $SO_2$ breakthrough curve equation of $Fe_2O_3$ for this system can be expressed as Kr=3,914,000 exp(-37,329.86/RT). By means of the breakthrough curve, the influence of bed height on breakthrough time was also estimated.

  • To predict the service life of an organic vapor respirator cartridge, the breakthrough curve of respirator was simulated using a fixed-bed adsorption model and compared with that of sampling tube. And the effects of bed porosity, length to diameter ratio and flow rate of the sampling tube were studied. The life time of respirator cartridge was increased with the decrease of particle size and bed porosity. And the breakthrough time of sampling tube was affected by the flow rate, however not by the length to diameter ratio. The 10% breakthrough time of the sampling tube was corresponded with that of cartridge.

  • The removal characteristics of H$_2$S from IGCC process over the natural manganese ore(NMO) containing several metal oxides($MnO_x$ : 51.85%, $FeO_y$ : 3.86%, CaO : 0.11%) were carried out in a batch type fluidized bed reactor(I.D.=40mm, height=0.8m). The $H_2S$ breakthrough curves were obtained as a function of temperature, initial gas velocity, initial gas concentration, and aspect ratio. The effect of particle size ratio and particle mixing fraction on $H_2S$ removal were investigated with binary system of different particle size. From this study, the adsorption capacity of $H_2S$ increased with temperature but decreased with excess gas velocity. The breakthrough time for $H_2S$ is reduced as the gas velocity is increased which leaded to gas by-passing and gas-solid contacting in a fluidized bed reactor. The results of the binary particle system with different size in batch experimental could predict to improve the behavior of continuous process of $H_2S$ removal efficiency. The natural manganese ore could be considered as potential sorbent in $H_2S$ removal.
