  • In particle radiotherapy, a shape of the beam to conform the irradiation field is statically defined by the compensator, collimator and potal devices at the outside of the patient body. However the target such as lung or liver cancer moves along with respiration. This increases the irradiated volume of normal tissue. Prior discussions about organ motions along with respiration have been mainly focused on inferior-superior movement that was usually perpendicular to beam axis. On the other hand, the change of the target depth along the beam axis is very important especially in particle radiotherapy, because the range end of beam (Bragg peak) is so sharp as to be matched to distal edge of the target. In treatment planning, the range of the particle beam inside the body is calculated using a calibration curve relating CT number and water equivalent path length (WEL) to correct the inhomogeneities of tissues. The variation in CT number along the beam path would cause the uncertainties of range calculation at treatment planning for particle radiotherapy. To estimate the uncertainties of the range calculation associated with patient breathing, we proposed the method using sequential CT images with respiration waveform, and analyzed organ motions and WELs at patients that had lung or liver cancer. The variation of the depth along the beam path was presented in WEL rather than geometrical length. In analyzed cases, WELs around the diaphragm were remarkably changed depending on the respiration, and the magnitude of these WEL variations was almost comparable to inferior-superior movement of diaphragm. The variation of WEL around the lung was influenced by heartbeat.

  • A new approach for antimicrobial is based on the overproduction of reactive nitrogen species (RNS), especially; nitric oxide (NO) and peroxinitrite (ONOO-) are important factors to deactivate the bacteria. Recently, non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) has been frequently used in the field of microbial sterilization through the generation of different kinds of RNS/ROS species. However, in previous study we showed APPJ has combine effects ROS/RNS on bacterial sterilization. It is not still clear whether this bacterial killing effect has been done through ROS or RNS. We need to further investigate separate effect of ROS and RNS on bacterial sterilization. Hence, in this work, we have enhanced NO production, especially; by applying a 1% of HNO3 vapour to the N2 based APPJ. In comparison with nitrogen plasma with inclusion of water vapour plasma, it has been shown that nitrogen plasma with inclusion of 1% of HNO3 vapour has higher efficiency in killing the E. coli through the high production of NO. We also investigate the enhancement of NO species both in atmosphere by emission spectrum and inside the solution by ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. Moreover, qPCR analysis of oxidative stress mRNA shows higher gene expression. It is noted that 1% of HNO3 vapour plasma generates high amount of NO for killing bacteria.

  • The Ne-Xe plasmas in dense plasma-focus device with coaxial electrodes were generated for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. The influence of gas mixture ratio, Ne-Xe (1, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 50%) mixture gas, on EUV emission measurement, EUV intensity and electron temperature in the coaxially focused plasma were investigated. An input voltage of 4.5 kV was applied to the capacitor bank of 1.53mF and the diode chamber was filled with Ne-Xe mixture gas at a prescribed pressure. The inner surface of the cylindrical cathode was lined by an acetal insulator. The anode was made of tin metal. The EUV emission signal of the wavelength in the range of 6~16 nm has been detected by a photo-detector (AXUV-100 Zr/C, IRD). The visible emission line was also detected by the composite-grating spectrometer of the working wavelength range of 200~1100 nm (HR 4000CG). The electron temperature is obtained by the optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and measured by the Boltzmann plot with the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE).

  • We have investigated the breakdown properties in liquids by high voltage pulse system. High voltage pulse power system is consisted of the Marx-generator with two capacitors (0.5 ${\mu}F$, withstanding voltage is 40 kV), to which the charging voltage can be applied to maximum 30 kV DC, spark gap switch and charging resistor of 20 $M{\Omega}$. We have made use of tungsten pin electrodes of anode-cathode (A-K), which are immersed into the liquids. The breakdown voltage and current signals are measured by high voltage probe (Tektronix P6015A) and current monitor (IPC CM-1.S). Especially the high speed breakdown or plasma propagation characteristics in the pulsed A-K gap have been investigated by using the high speed ICCD camera. We have measured the electron temperature through the Boltzmann plot method from the breakdown spectrums. Here the A-K gap has been changed by 1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm. The used liquids are distilled water and solution of salt (0.9 %). The output voltage and current signals at breakdown in distilled water are shown to be bigger than those in saline solution. The breakdown voltage and current characteristics in liquids will be discussed in accordance with A-K gap distances. It is also found that the electron temperatures and plasma densities in liquids are decreased in conformity with A-K gap.

  • The extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation, whose wavelength is from 120 nm down to 10 nm, and the energy from 10 eV up to 124 eV, is widely utilized such as in photoelectron spectroscopy, solar imaging, especially in lithography and soft x-ray microscopy. In this study, we have investigated the plasma diagnostics as well as the debris characteristics between the two types of dense plasma focusing devices with coaxial electrodes of Mather and hypocycloidal pinch (HCP), respectively. The EUV emission intensity, electron temperature and plasma density have been investigated in these cylindrical focused plasma along with the debris characteristics. An input voltage of 5 kV has been applied to the capacitor bank of 1.53 uF and the diode chamber has been filled with Ar gas at pressure ranged from 1 mTorr and 180 mTorr. The inner surface of the cathode was covered by polyacetal insulator. The central anode electrode has been made of tin. The wavelength of the EUV emission has been measured to be in the range of 6~16 nm by a photo-detector (AXUV-100 Zr/C, IRD). The visible emission has also been measured by the spectrometer with the wavelength range of 200~1,100 nm. The electron temperature and plasma density have been measured by the Boltzmann plot and Stark broadening methods, respectively, under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE).

  • The scattered light intensity from a spherical particle passing through the cross-over region of two coherent laser beams, varies periodically. Photodetection of this light beams produces a periodic signal of varying amplitude. The phase of the signal varies with the particle size and refractive index, the beam crossing angle and wavelength, and the position and size of the scattered ligth collecting aperture. In this paper the phase variation with respect to the particle absorptive index of retraction, collecting lens size and beam crossing angle is calculated using both Mie scattering theory and reflection theory. The two theories show good agreement in phase predictions, especially for large absorptive indices and for small collection lenses. Both theories predict phase to be inversely proportional to the beam crossing angle.

  • In this work, amorphous carbon thin films were deposited for hard mask applications by a reactive particle beam (RPB) assisted sputtering system at room temperature. The depositing characteristics of the films were investigated as functions of operating parameters such as reflector bias voltage and RF plasma power. It was confirmed that the deposition rate increased with increasing the reflector bias voltage and RF plasma power. By an atomic force microscope (AFM), it was revealed that the surface roughness was also increased. The total stress in films was determined by the use of the substrate curvature and its result will be discussed.

  • In the first part of this paper, the influences of some of crack parameters on natural frequencies of a cracked cantilever Functionally Graded Beam (FGB) are studied. A cantilever beam is modeled using Finite Element Method (FEM) and its natural frequencies are obtained for different conditions of cracks. Then effect of variation of depth and location of cracks on natural frequencies of FGB with single and multiple cracks are investigated. In the second part, two Multi-Layer Feed Forward (MLFF) Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are designed for prediction of FGB's Cracks' location and depth. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Back-Error Propagation (BEP) algorithms are applied for training ANNs. The accuracy of two training methods' results are investigated.

  • Particle motion through a disk type critical orifice placed in a 3.0cm diameter chamber has been studied numerically. In the simulation, the velocity field is solved using Pantankar's SIMPLER algorithm for the compressible flow and convergence of the computation is confirmed if the mass source at each control volume is smaller than $10^{-7}$. The particle motion in the flow field is solved in Lagrangian method. The particle trajectories showed that the particles injected away from the center line are expanded rapidly. At lower pressures, this expansion phenomena are more dominant. At lower pressures, the clear difference in particle and air speed is showed all the way down to the exit plan. It was found that particles with Stokes number of ca.2.5 tend to focus close to the center line very well except the particles travelling near the wall. However, particles with Stokes number greater than ca.2.5 show a tendency to cross the center line.

  • In this study, a new strategy is presented to transmit the fundamental elastic beam problem into the modern optimization platform and solve it by using artificial intelligence (AI) tools. As a practical example, deflection of Euler-Bernoulli beam is mathematically formulated by 2nd-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) in accordance to the classical beam theory. This fundamental engineer problem is then transmitted from classic formulation to its artificial-intelligence presentation where the behavior of the beam is simulated by using neural networks (NNs). The supervised training strategy is employed in the developed NNs implemented in the heuristic optimization algorithms as the fitness function. Different evolutionary optimization tools such as genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are used to solve this non-linear optimization problem. The step-by-step procedure of the proposed method is presented in the form of a practical flowchart. The results indicate that the proposed method of using AI toolsin solving beam ODEs can efficiently lead to accurate solutions with low computational costs, and should prove useful to solve more complex practical applications.
