Background: Carbon ion therapy has achieved satisfactory results. However, patients have a risk to get a secondary cancer. In order to estimate the risk, it is essential to understand particle transportation and nuclear reactions in the patient's body. The particle transport Monte Carlo simulation code is a useful tool to understand them. Since the code validation for heavy ion incident reactions is not enough, the experimental data of the elementary reaction processes are needed. Materials and Methods: We measured neutron production double-differential cross-sections (DDXs) on a carbon bombarded with 430 MeV/nucleon carbon beam at PH2 beam line of HIMAC facility in NIRS. Neutrons produced in the target were measured with NE213 liquid organic scintillators located at six angles of 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and $90^{\circ}$. Results and Discussion: Neutron production double-differential cross-sections for carbon bombarded with 430 MeV/nucleon carbon ions were measured by the time-of-flight method with NE213 liquid organic scintillators at six angles of 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and $90^{\circ}$. The cross sections were obtained from 1 MeV to several hundred MeV. The experimental data were compared with calculated results obtained by Monte Carlo simulation codes PHITS, Geant4, and FLUKA. Conclusion: PHITS was able to reproduce neutron production for elementary processes of carbon-carbon reaction precisely the best of three codes.

The Rare Isotope Science Project was launched in 2011 in Korea toward constructing the Rare isotope Accelerator complex for ON line experiments (RAON). RAON will house several experimental systems, including the Muon Spin Rotation/Relaxation/Resonance (μSR) facility in High Energy Experimental Building B. This facility will use 600-MeV protons with a maximum current of 660 pμA and beam power of 400 kW. The key μSR features will facilitate projects related to condensed-matter and nuclear physics. Typical experiments require a few million surface muons fully spin-polarized opposite to their momentum for application to small samples. Here, we describe the design of a muon transport beam line for delivering the requisite muon numbers and the electromagnetic-component specifications in the μSR facility. We determine the beam-line configuration via beam-optics calculations and the transmission efficiency via single-particle tracking simulations. The electromagnet properties, including fringe field effects, are applied for each component in the calculations. The designed surface-muon beamline is 17.3 m long, consisting of 2 solenoids, 2 dipoles affording 70° deflection, 9 quadrupoles, and a Wien filter to eliminate contaminant positrons. The average incident-muon flux and spin rotation angle are estimated as 5.2 × 106 μ+/s and 45°, respectively.
High-energy and high-dose X-ray and electron beam have been used in radiation therapy after developing particle accelerators. It is recommended to irradiate patients exect real dose for improving therapy effectiveness by International Committee on Radiation Units and Measurement. The radiation detector for daily beam checks of medical accelerators is described. Using thirteen silicon diodes, we have designed the diode detector providing information about calibration, beam symmetry, flatness, stability variation according to radiation damage, time and general quality assurance for both photon and eletron beams. we also compared these measurement values with those of using ionization chamber, film and semiconductor dosimeter.

$Al_2O_3$/Al composite was produced by the infiltration of molten Al Into $Al_2$O$_3$ preform at 900-$1200^{\circ}C$, The process was accelerated by spreading borosilicate glass powder onto the interface between Al powder compact and $Al_2O_3$ preform. Melt infiltration initialed after incubation period, and the growth of infiltration was observed to be linearly propotional with time. The major components of the composite are $Al_2O_3$ and Al with a trace of Si which is remained from borosilicate, the reaction accelerator. Relative density of the composite increased with the particle size of $Al_2O_3$ but decreased with infiltration temperature. As infiltration temperature increases from room to $950^{\circ}C$ higher strength and fracture toughness were obtained.

A multi-megawatt long pulse ion source (LPIS) of neutral beam injector was developed for the KSTAR. Beam extraction experiments of the LPIS were carried out at the neutral beam test stand (NBTS). Design requirements for the ion source were 120 kV/65 A deuterium beam and a 300 s pulse length. A maximum ion density of $9.1310^{11}$$cm^{-3}$ was measured by using electric probes, and an optimum arc efficiency of 0.46 A/kW was estimated with ion saturation current of the probes, arc power, and total beam area. An arcing problem, caused by the structural defect of decelerating grid supporter, in the third gap was solved by the blocking of backstream ion particles, originated from the plasma in the neutralizer duct, through the unnecessary spaces on the side of grid supporter. A maximum drain power of 1.5 MW (i.e. 70 kV/21 A) with hydrogen was measured for a pulse duration of 0.5 s. Optimum beam perveance was ranged from 0.75 to 0.85. An improved design of accelerator for the effective control of beam particle trajectory should provide higher beam perveance.

Polymer nanocomposite has been attracting much attention as a new insulation material, since homogeneous dispersion of nm-sized inorganic fillers can improve various properties significantly. In this paper, various kinds of epoxy based nanocomposites were made and AC breakdown strength of Nano-TiO2 and micro-silica filler mixture of epoxy based composites were studied by sphere to sphere electrode. Moreover, nano- and micro-filler combinations were adopted as an approach toward practical application of nanocomposite insulation materials. Nano-TiO2 particle size is about 10nm and composites ratio was resin (100) : hardener (82) : accelerator (1.5). AC breakdown test was performed at room temperature (25 [$^{\circ}C$], 80 [$^{\circ}C$] and 100 [$^{\circ}C$] in the vicinity of Tg (90[$^{\circ}C$]). And thermal conductivity were measured by ASTM-D5470.

Toxic waste disposal: Many people think that when toxic waste is dumped into the ocean or into the air, it disappears. This belief is incorrect. Rather than disappearing, it accumulates over time and slowly destroys the environment. Ultimately, it leads to the destruction of human race. Plasma is environmentally friendly: Plasma is environmentally friendly because it is created and disappears. When plasma is formed on the earth, you need certain conditions such as accelerating electrons by an electrical discharge or a particle accelerator. When this is gone, plasma completely disappears, leaving no impact on the environment. Plasmas produce radicals: Even if plasma density is low at atmospheric pressure, many radicals (excited states of molecules) are created. These radicals are chemically very aggressive. So instead of using harmful chemicals, plasma can be utilized for less of an impact on the environment. Plasma can reach very high temperatures: Plasma is also useful because when you control the density, you can easily reach high temperatures up to $5000{\sim}6000^{\circ}C$ at atmosphere pressure. Because of this heat and the chemical aggressiveness of the plasma, there are many green applications for plasma technology. Pulsed power technology: Pulsed electric field for extraction, drying and killing bacteria. Treatment of biological tissue by pulsed electric fields: Extraction of substances from cells: Sterilisation, Medical applications, Growth stimulation, Food preparation. Each application has its specialities, especially with respect to pulse shape and electric field strength.

This study is to measure the radiation dose of neutrons generated by the particle accelerator during X-ray (photon) treatment with a neutron detection method by using CR-39, and to research how the generation of neutrons may incur problems associated with radiation doses for patient treatment when using high energy photons for cancer treatment as a clinical application. The findings are summarized as follows : The results showed that average 0.35mSv was measured with exposure of 1Gy photon in case of fast neutron, 0.65mSv with exposure of 2Gy photon, 1.82mSv exposure of 5Gy, 0.26mSv with exposure of 1Gy photon in case of thermal neutron, 0.56mSv with exposure of 2Gy photon, and 1.23mSv with exposure of 5Gy of photon. By measuring the occurrence of neutron by using Wedge Filter, it has been confirmed that the occurrence of neutrons increased when using Wedge Filter. The results also showed that more neutrons were detected over the existing experiments when using an SRS Cone requiring high doses of radiation. Total 2.85mSv neutrons were found on the average with exposure of 5Gy photon in case of fast neutron and 1.37mSv neutrons were found on the average with exposure of 5Gy photon in case of thermal neutron. During the general treatment, about 1.6 times more neutrons over 5Gy photon were found in case of fast neutron and about 1.12 time more neutrons over 5Gy photon were found in case of thermal neutron.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect and potential of electron beam (E-beam) irradiation treatment to the synthetic bony mixtures composed of hydroxyapatite (HA; Bongros$^{(R)}$, Bio@ Co., Korea) and tricalcium phosphate (${\beta}$-TCP, Sigma-Aldrich Co., USA), mixed at various ratios and of type I collagen (Rat tail, BD Biosciences Co., Sweden) as an organic matrix. Methods: We used 1.0~2.0 MeV linear accelerator and 2.0 MeV superconductive linear accelerator (power 100 KW, pressure 115 kPa, temperature $-30{\sim}120^{\circ}C$, sensor sensitivity 0.1~1.2 mV/kPa, generating power sensitivity 44.75 mV/kPa, supply voltage $5{\pm}0.25$ V) with different irradiation dose, such as 1, 30 and 60 kGy. Structural changes in this synthetic bone material were studied in vitro, by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elementary analysis and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), attenuated total reflection (ATR), and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). Results: The large particular size of HA was changed after E-beam irradiation, to which small particle of TCP was engaged with organic collagen components in SEM findings. Conclusion: The important new in vitro data to be applicable as the substitutes of artificial bone materials in dental and medical fields will be able to be summarized.

In this paper, for a new detection system development with the better accurate dose evaluation and beam distribution imaging using the small field irradiation of linear accelerator, the compound semiconductor based detection sensors were fabricated and the performance evaluation was investigated. The special particle-in-binder sedimentation was used for a large area film sensor fabrication. The detection properties for high energy x-rays were investigated from a dark current, an output current, a rising time, a falling time, and response delay measurement. The experimental results, the $TiO_2$ mixed $HgI_2$ sensor showed the best electrical characteristics than $PbI_2$, PbO, pure $HgI_2$. Linearity, repeatability, and accuracy tests from LINAC were tested, the $TiO_2$ mixed $HgI_2$ sensor showed the better performance than the commercially available dosimetry devices.
