Low-Z particle Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis was applied to characterize MSW fly- and bottom -ash particle samples originated from two municipal incinerators (denoted as A and B) in Korea. According to their chemical composition, many distinctive particle types were identified. In A fly ash, the major chemical species are carbon-rich, aluminosilicates and many particles are composed of as a mixture of $ CaCO_3$ and other chemical species such as $CaSO_4$ or $CaCl_2$. For B fly ash, Fe, iron oxide, NaCl and NaCl-containing particles are the most abundant. In bottom ash, A and B were composed of similar chemical species such as carbon-rich, Fe, iron oxide, $CaCO_3$, and aluminosilicates. It was demonstrated that the single-particle characterization using this low-Z particle EPMA technique provided detailed information on various types of chemical species in the MSW ash samples. In addition, the technique has advantage over conventional analytical techniques in the point that both crystalline and glass-like ash particles can be analyzed at the same time.

Low-Z particle electron probe X-ray microanalysis (low-Z particle EPMA) was applied to characterize aerosol particles collected at Gosan in Jeju island during an IOP (intensive observation period) for an international ACE-Asia project in April, 2001. Various types of atmospheric particles such as organics, carbon-rich, aluminosilicates, silicon oxide, sodium nitrate, sodium chloride, and ammonium sulfate were observed. The reacted sea salt particles such as sodium nitrate were the most abundantly encountered, but original sea salt particles were rarely observed. Since the Low-Z particle EPMA can provide quantitative information on the chemical composition of aerosol particles, many different particle types on the basis of their chemical compositions were observed and identified. In this study, it is demonstrated that the Low-Z particle EPMA can provide detailed information on the chemical compositions for the aerosol particles collected for six consecutive days in April, 2001, at Gosan super-site.
The performance of a vertical type centrifugal distributor of granular materials was studied by means of mathematical models and experimental investigations. To develop the mathematical description of particle motion, some assumptions were made. The distribution process consisted of three stages: the entrance of a particle to the blade, the motion of the particle on the blade, and the motion of the particle in the air. The physical properties of fertilizer, which affected the particle motion, were investigated: bluk density, coefficient of friction, coefficient of restitution, and particle size distribution. The particle motion were simulated by using a computer. A prototype distributor was designed and constructed for experimental tests. The following conclusions were drawn from the computer simulation and experiment results. 1. The fertilizer may slide or roll at the point of contact when they impact on the blade and move along the blade. 2. The interaction among fertilizers may prevent them from bouncing. 3. When fertilizers roll on the blade, rolling resistance is one of the factors affecting the particle's motion. 4. The trajectory angle and position of fertilizers from a disc depend on the blade position and particle shape, but the rotating speed of the disc affected them only slightly.

This study presents the nano-sized particle emission characteristics from a small turbocharged common rail diesel engine applicable to prime and auxiliary machines on marine vessels. The experiments were conducted under dynamic engine operating conditions, such as steady-state, cold start, and transient conditions. The particle number and size distributions were analyzed with a high resolution PM analyzer. The diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) had an insignificant effect on the reduction in particle number, but particle number emissions were drastically reduced by 3 to 4 orders of magnitude downstream of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) at various steady conditions. Under high speed and load conditions, the particle filtering efficiency was decreased by the partial combustion of trapped particles inside the DPF because of the high exhaust temperature caused by the increased particle number concentration. Retarded fuel injection timing and higher EGR rates led to increased particle number emissions. As the temperature inside the DPF increased from $25^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$, the peak particle number level was reduced by 70% compared to cold start conditions. High levels of nucleation mode particle generation were found in the deceleration phases during the transient tests.

Deposition of flame-synthesized silica particles onto a target is utilized in optical fiber preform fabrication processes. The particles are convected and deposited onto the target. Falkner-Skan wedge flow was chosen as the particle laden flow. Typically the particles are polydisperse in size and follow a lognormal size distribution. Brownian diffusion, thermophoresis, and coagulation of the particles were considered and effects of these phenomena on particle deposition were studied. A moment model was developed in order to predict the particle number density and the particle size distribution simultaneously. Particle deposition with various wedge configurations was examined for conditions selected for a typical VAD process. When coagulation was considered, mean particle size and its standard deviation increased and particle number density decreased, compared to the case without coagulation. These results proved the fact that coagulation effect expands particle size distribution. The results were discussed with characteristics of thermal and diffusion boundary layers. As the boundary layers grow in thickness, overall temperature and concentration gradients decrease, resulting in decrease of deposition rate and increase of particle residence time in the flow and thus coagulation effect.
This study was primarily focused on the experimental comparison of the particle emission characteristics for heavy duty engine. PM and particle number from various heavy duty engines and DPF type were analyzed with a golden particle measurement system recommended by the Particle Measurement Program. And the repeatability and reproducibility between test mode was analyzed. This study was conducted for the experimental comparison on particulate emission characteristics between the European and World-Harmonized test cycles for a heavy-duty diesel engine. To verify the particulate mass and particle number concentrations from various operating modes, ETC/ESC and WHTC/WHSC, both of which will be enacted in Euro VI emission legislation, were evaluated. Real-time particle formation of the transient cycles ETC and WHTC were strongly correlated with engine operating conditions and after-treatment device temperature. A higher particle number concentration during the ESC mode was ascribed to passive DPF regeneration and the thermal release of low volatile particles at high exhaust temperature conditions.
The main purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the nano-particle emission characteristics by 3-different biodiesel blending rates in a CI engine. Nano-particle number density emitted from various operating conditions of compression ignition engine can be investigated by using the PPS (Pegasor Particle Sensor) system. Namely, some particle charged through the corona discharge in real-time can be measured by PPS system. Under the steady state operation of the 2.0L CRDi diesel engine with different operating condition and biodiesel blending rates, the nano-particle number density was analyzed at the downstream position of DOC system. As this research result, more engine load speed and higher the concentration of biodiesel blending rate showed that the nano-particle number density decreases. Also we found that DOC system for clean diesel engine is effectively useful instrument to reduce diesel particulate matter as resource of nano-particle generation.
The primary objective of this study was to learn the effect of various sugar particle size and level on cookie spread, The effect of sugar particle size and level on sugarsnap cookie spread was studied. Three different particle sized sugars; powered sugar, granulated sugar and sanding sugar, were used for the cookie test baking with five different sugar levels; 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90% based on the weight of flour. In mixing process, 5 minutes of creaming time was used for cream making and then the specific gravity of cream was measured on the basis of each different sugar particle size and level. In the result, the specific gravity of cream was influenced by sugar particle size and sugar level. However, the specific gravity of cream had no influence on cookie dough specific gravity. Cookie spread was influenced by sugar particle size and sugar level. Greater cookie spread was obtained by decreasing sugar particle size and increasing sugar level resulted in increased spread. Therefore, selection of suitable sugar particle size and its use level can be factors in controlling spread and imparting desired packaging characteristics.
The numerical simulation of the particle dispersion in the vortical flows provides insight into the mechanism of particle-fluid interaction. The simulation results show that the mixing layers are characterized by the large-scale vortical structures undergoing pairing process. The particle dispersion is strongly influenced by the large-scale structures and the particle sizes. The analysis shows that the mixing layers grows like a step-function.
The influence of the particle size of quartz and the change of cooling rate to the strength of conventional triaxial porcelain was studied, . The results indicate that 1. The residual quartz content was increased by particle size increasing. And the strength was increased by increas-ing residual quartz content which increased the total stress in the specimen. But the influence of residual quartz was lessened by the extent of crack between quartz particle and glass matrix 2. In order to increase the strength of the body fast cooling is suitable to small quartz particle and slow cooling is suitable to large quartz particle.
