How is the flow in a rotating impeller. About 35 years have passed since one experimentalist rotating with the impeller. of a huge centrifugal blower made the flow measurements using a hot-wire anemometer (Fowler 1968). Optical measurement methods have great advantages over the intrusive methods especially for the flow measurement in a rotating impeller. One is the optical flow visualization (FV) technique (Senoo, et al., 1968) and the other is the application of laser velocimetry (LV) (Hah and Krain, 1990). Particle image velocimetries (PIVs) combine major features of both FV and LV, and are very attractive due to the feasibility of simultaneous and multi-points measurements (Hayami and Aramaki, 1999). A high-pressure-ratio transonic centrifugal compressor with a low-solidity cascade diffuser was tested in a closed loop with HFC134a gas at 18,000rpm (Hayami, 2000). Two kinds of measurement techniques by image processing were applied to visualize a flow in the compressor. One is a velocity field measurement at the inducer of the impeller using a PIV and the other is a pressure field measurement on the side wall of the cascade diffuser using a pressure sensitive paint (PSP) measurement technique. The PIV was successfully applied for visualization of an unsteady behavior of a shock wave based on the instantaneous velocity field measurement (Hayami, et al., 2002b) as well as a phase-averaged velocity vector field with a shock wave over one blade pitch (Hayami, et al., 2002a. b). A violent change in pressure was successfully visualized using a PSP measurement during a surge condition even though there are still some problems to be overcome (Hayami, et al., 2002c). Both PIV and PSP results are discussed in comparison with those of laser-2-focus (L2F) velocimetry and those of semiconductor pressure sensors. Experimental fluid dynamics (EFDs) are still growing up more and more both in hardware and in software. On the other hand, computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) are very attractive to understand the details of flow. A secondary flow on the side wall of the cascade diffuser was visualized based either steady or unsteady CFD calculations (Bonaiuti, et al.,2002). EFD and CFD methods will be combined to a hybrid method being complementary to each other. Measurement techniques by image processing as well as CFD calculations give a huge amount of data. Then, data mining technique will become more important to understand the flow mechanism both for EFD and CFD.
Cultivated wild ginseng is a widely used dietary supplement and medicinal herb. The aim of this study was to optimize the ginseng using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)- charged aerosol detection (CAD) for ginsenoside analysis. CAD measures the physical property of an analyte and responds to almost all non-volatile species, independent of their nature, spectral properties, or particle size. It has become widely employed in pharmaceutical analysis. The cultivated wild ginseng extracts were analyzed for compositions of ginsenosides Rb1, Rd, Rg1, Rf, Re, and Rh1. The optimal analysis condition was set up from an experiment using a gradient. Ten grams of cultivated wild ginseng were extracted with 95% EtOH 100 ml for 24 hr at 80℃. The contents of the 6six major ginsenosides in the cultivated wild ginseng extract were Rb1 (5.48±0.12 mg/g), Rd (5.33±0.14 mg/g), Rg1 (12.80± 0.05 mg/g), Rf (19.08±0.68 mg/g), Re (19.87±0.05 mg/g), and Rh1 (16.47±0.16 mg/g), respectively. HPLC showed that the protopanaxatriol group (Rg1, Rf, Re, Rh1) had more content than the protopanaxadiol group (Rb1, Rd) in cultivated wild ginseng extract. In summary, the ginsenosides were identified with HPLC-CAD analysis, and their presence and quantity imply the importance of quality control, as well as the pharmacological activity of the ginseng root.

This study is the second investigation on the steady flow characteristics of an SI engine with a semi-edge combustion chamber as a function of the port shape with varying evaluation positions. For this purpose, the planar velocity profiles were measured from 1.75B, 1.75 times of bore position apart from the bottom of head, to 6.00B positions using particle - image velocimetry. The flow patterns were examined with both a straight and a helical port. The velocity profiles, streamlines, and centers of swirl were almost the same at the same valve lift regardless of the measuring position, which is quite different from the case of the pent-roof combustion chamber. All the eccentricity values of the straight port were out of distortion criterion 0.15 through the lifts and the position. However, the values of the helical port exceeded the distortion criterion by up to 4 mm lift, but decreased rapidly above the 3.00B position and the 5 mm lift. There always existed a relative offset effect in the evaluation of the swirl coefficient using the PIV method due to the difference of the ideal impulse swirl meter velocity profile assumption, except for the cylinder-center-base estimation that was below 4 mm of the straight port. Finally, it was concluded that taking the center as an evaluation basis and the assumption about the axial velocity profile did not have any qualitative effect on swirl evaluation, but affected the value owing to the detailed profile.
Raney nickel was used as catalyst in the hydrogen electrode for an alkaline fuel cell. The hydrogen electrode manufactured with the Raney nickel catalyst which was sintered at $700^{\circ}C$ was found to have the highest electrode performance. Using the Raney nickel powder of average particle size $90{\AA}$ for the electrode, the current density which had been measured was $450mA/cm^2$ at $80^{\circ}C$ using 6N KOH solution as an electrolyte. The effects of PTFE addition were investigated with CO-chemisorption, polarization curves and Tafel slope. CO-chemisorption had shown the optimum value when the Raney nickel was mixed with 5wt% of PTFE, but from the current density and Tafel slope at porous Raney nickel electrode, the appropriate value of PTFE addition was 10wt%. Recommendable Ni and Al portion for Raney nickel was 60 : 40 and loading amount was $0.25g/cm^2$. Also the influence of pressing pressure for manufacturing catalytic layer and for junction with gas diffusion layer was examined. The morphology of catalyst surface was investigated with SEM. The influence of reactivation time and heat-treatment temperature were also studied.
$N_2$ doped $TiO_2$ nano-sized powder was prepared using a DC arc plasma jet and investigated with XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, and photo-catalytic decomposition. Recently the research interest about the nano-sized $TiO_2$ powder has been increased to improve its photo-catalytic activity for the removal of environmental pollutants. Nitrogen gas, reacting gas, and titanium tetrachloride ($TiCl_4$) were used as the raw materials and injected into the plasma reactor to synthesize the $N_2$ doped $TiO_2$ power. The particle size and XRD peaks of the synthesized powder were analyzed as a function of the flow rate of the nitrogen gas. Also, the characteristics of the photo-catalytic decomposition using the prepared powder were studied. For comparing the photo-catalytic decomposition performance of $TiO_2$ powder with that of $TiO_2$ coating, $TiO_2$ thin films were prepared by the spin coating and the pulsed laser deposition. For the results of the acetaldehyde decomposition, the photo-catalytic activity of $TiO_{2-x}N_x$ powder was higher than that of the pure $TiO_2$ powder in the visible light region. For the methylene blue decomposition, the decomposition efficiency of $TiO_2$ powder was also higher than that of $TiO_2$ film.

Efficacy of dielectric barrier discharge-cold plasma treatment (DBD-CPT) for microbial decontamination of onion powder was evaluated. Onion powder, inoculated with Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Enteritidis, or Listeria monocytogenes, was treated with helium DBD-CPT. DBD-CPT (9 kV, 20 min) inhibited E. coli O157:H7, S. Enteritidis, and L. monocytogenes by $1.4{\pm}0.5$, $2.3{\pm}0.3$, and $1.2{\pm}0.0log\;CFU/cm^2$, respectively. The inactivation levels of E. coli O157:H7, S. Enteritidis and L. monocytogenes increased by $2.2{\pm}0.1$, $2.5{\pm}0.1$ and $1.9{\pm}0.3log\;CFU/cm^2$, respectively, as water activity increased from 0.4 to 0.8, and increased by $2.3{\pm}0.4$, $2.1{\pm}0.1$ and $1.6{\pm}0.1log\;CFU/cm^2$, respectively, as the particle size increased from 0.3 to $1.0cm^2$. Neither the ascorbic acid and quercetin concentrations nor the color of onion powder was changed by DBD-CPT (p>0.05). These results demonstrate the potential for application of DBD-CPT in improving microbiological safety of onion powder while preserving the physicochemical properties.
This study was conducted in an effort to meet the need for domestic production of hydroponic media and for medium development using recycled hydroponic rockwool slabs. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the growth of plug seedlings of petunia 'Romeo' in various mixtures including particles of used rockwool slabs (rockwool particles) and wood chips. In the first experiment, seedlings were grown in plugs filled with mixtures of steam- sterilized rockwool particles and chestnut wood chips, which had been weathered for six months and screened through either 2.8 mm or 5.6 mm sieve, at the mixing ratio of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, or 0:100 (v/v). In the second experiment, seedlings were grown in plugs filled with twenty different mixtures of steam-sterilized particles of used hydroponic rockwool slabs with 4 mm chestnut or pine wood chips, coir, peatmoss, or perlite. In the first experiment seedling growth was not affected by particle size of chestnut wood chips, was superior in the control (commercial plug medium) and in 100% rockwool particles, but was suppressed as mixing ratio of chestnut wood chips increased. In the second experiment, leaf length, and shoot fresh and dry weights were the greatest in rockwool particles+peatmoss+coir treatment, followed by rockwool particles+peatmoss treatment. Leaf length was suppressed as ratio of wood chips increased, especially of chestnut wood chips. Root development was the greatest in rockwool particles+peatmoss+perlite treatment, followed by the control, and rockwool particles+peatmoss+coir treatment. The growth was suppressed as the mixing ratio of rockwool particles, peatmoss, or coir decreased.
From August to October 1998, over 60% mortality of cultured striped beakperch Oplegnathus fasciatus was occurred in net cages along the southern coast of Korea. Moribund fish showed some clinical signs of lethargic behavior, dark coloration or decoloration, severe gill anemia and enlargement of spleen. Also enlarged basophilic cells showing Feulgen -positive reaction were observed in the tissue section of spleen, kidney, liver and heart of the diseased fish. GF cells inoculated with spleen homogenate of diseased fish produced cytopathic effect of enlarged and rounded cells, therefore the causative virus was isolated from diseased fish. Striped beakperch fingerlings intraperitoneally inoculated with the causative virus ($10^4TCID_{50}$/0.1 ml) revealed symptoms similar to those of naturally infected fish and died from 7 to 14 days post injection. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the causative virus was enveloped icosahedral particle with 120~130 nm in diameter. PCR products of the expected size (500 bp) were amplified with a primer set based on the ATPase gene of RSIV(red sea bream iridovirus) using template DNAs which were extracted from the spleen of diseased fish and GF cells inoculated with the causative virus. According to the analysis of nucleotide sequence of these PCR products, the sequence from ATPase cDNA gene of the causative virus showed 95% homology with that of RSIV. These results indicate that the mass mortality in the cultured striped beakperch was caused by the infection of iridovirus similar to RSIV.
This study dyed rayon fabric using loess as a natural colorant. To obtain the optimal dyeing conditions, various dyeing conditions were examined (temperature, pH, time, and concentration). The color fastness was evaluated using standard washing and rubbing fastness tests. The results were as follows: The loess powder particle size ranged from 0.4 to $1.7{\mu}m$ with a distribution range of 1.1 to $1.4{\mu}m$, representing a fine and uniform manufactured loess powder. The loess component analysis showed a large amount of silicon dioxide and aluminum oxide. TheFT-IR spectra showed that the ammonium group in the rayon fabric produced N-H banding at $1,540cm^{-1}$. The highest K/S value for the rayon fabric was obtained when the pH was 8.0, and this value increased rapidly with a longer dyeing time and when increasing the loess concentration to 30% (w/v). Pre-treatment with a soybean solution produced the highest K/S value for the rayon fabric with a loess concentration of 30% (w/v). The SEM analysis showed a higher amount of loess adhered to the rayon fabric surface when increasing the loess concentration. However, pre-treatment with a cationic agent and soybean solution resulted in a much higher attachment of loess to the fabric surface. Thus, the experimental results showed that using a cationized fabric and pre-treatment with a soybean solution are more effective when dyeing rayon fabric with loess than when using only loess.
Cellular glass foam (CGF), the reprocessed glass, has a possibility to be used as a medium component in plug culture of horticultural crops due to the its excellent air and water permeability as comparable to perlite. An experiment was conducted to investigate growth of plug seedlings of Lycopersicum esculentum 'Segye' as influenced by irrigation frequency in various medium combinations of CGF (2.0-4.0 mm particle size) and peatmoss. Seeds were sown in 200-cell plug trays, filled with mixtures of CGF and peatmoss either at 33:67 or 25:75 (%. v/v) and were germinated on a fogged propagation bed. The irrigation frequencies used were one, two or three times per every two days. A commercial plug medium (Tosilee medium) was used as the control, and the irrigation frequency in the control was one time per day. Growth of seedlings, and medium pH and EC were measured at 33 days after sowing. The medium composition had little influence on overall growth of seedlings. Irrigation frequency very significant affected number of leaves, leaf area, chlorophyll concentration, fresh and dry weights of shoots and roots, and dry matter. Growth of seedlings was the greatest with the highest irrigation frequency in the 25% CGF+75% peatmoss mixture.
