The effluent from anaerobic digestion process of slurry-type piggery waste has a characteristic of very low C/N ratio. Because of high nitrogen content, it is necessary to evaluate nitrogen removal alternative rather than conventional nitrification-denitrification scheme. In this study, two parallel treatment schemes of SBR-like partial nitritation reactor coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) reactor, and a nitritation reactor followed by nitrite denitrification process were evaluated with a slurry-type piggery waste. The feed to reactors adjusted with various $NH_4-N$ and organics concentration. The nitrite accumulation was successfully accomplished at the loading rate of about $1.0kgNH_4-N/m^3-day$. The $NO_2-N/NH_4-N$ ratio 1~2.6 in nitritated effluent that operated at HRT of 1 day indicated that SBR-like partial nitritation was applicable to ANAMMOX operation. Meanwhile, the nitrite accumulation of 87% was achieved at SBR operated with HRT of 3 days and $0.4mgO_2/L$ for denitritation. Experimental results further suggested that HRT (SRT) and free ammonia(FA) rather than DO are an effective control parameter for nitrite accumulation in piggery waste.
Partial nitirification and denitrification process has been reported to be technically feasible and economically favorable, especially for wastewater treatment with high ammonium concentration or low Carbon/Nitrogen ratio. This research was performed to survey nitrite accumulation by nitritation in treating ADEPT effluent of piggery wastewater, which contains highly concentrated ammonia. To estimate the possibility of nitrite accumulation, DO concentration and SRT were investigated as key operational parameters. This result proved that nitritation to nitrite was steadily obtained under short sludge retention time. Oxygen limitation was proved to be just a subsidiary parameter. Energy efficiency of nitritation-denitritation process was higher than complete nitrification-denitrification because external carbon requirement for denitritation could be saved. Though the influent contained significant nonbiodegradable organic substrate, total nitrogen removal efficiency was more than 51% in nitritation-denitritation system.

The feasibility of applying the shortcut nitrogen removal process to treat livestock wastewater on individual farms was examined, and appropriate operating parameters were established. As a result,, it was determined that the nitrification reaction was carried out under 550 mg/L of ammonium nitrogen concentration, but it was less effective under conditions of high ammonia concentration. Consequently, it was confirmed that a partial injection of inflow water was necessary to minimize the effects of ammonia toxicity. Following the sequential batch reactor (SBR) operation results, it was difficult to achieve the effluent quality standard without an external carbon source. Also, selection of the appropriate hydraulic retention time was critical for the optimal SBR operation. Following the livestock farm application, with external carbon source injecting, the total nitrogen concentration in the effluent was 85.1 mg/L. This result revealed that the standard could be accomplished through a single treatment on individual livestock farms. The ratio of nitrite nitrogen to ammonia nitrogen in the effluent was verified to be suitable for implementing the anammox process with a 10 days of hydraulic retention time. This study demonstrated the potential applicability of process in the future. However, in order to apply to livestock farms, managing variations in wastewater load across individual farms and addressing reduced nitrogen oxidation efficiency during the winter season are crucial.
This study assessed the contribution of emergent vegetation (Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia, and Nelumbo nucifera) to the submerged surface area, the amount of biofilms attached to the submerged portions of the plants, and the treatment performance of a free water surface (FWS) constructed wetland. Results showed that a 1% increase ($31m^2$) in the vegetative area resulted in an increase of $220m^2$ of submerged surface area, and 0.48 kg Volatile Suspended Solids (VSS) of attached biofilm. As the vegetation coverage increased, effluent organic matter and total Kjeldahl nitrogen decreased. Conversely, a higher nitrate concentration was found in the effluent as a result of increased nitrification and incomplete denitrification, which was limited by the availability of a carbon source. In addition, a larger vegetation coverage resulted in a higher phosphorus in the effluent, most likely released from senescent biofilms and sediments, which resulted from the partial suppression of algal growth. Based on the results, it was recommended that constructed wetlands should be operated with a vegetation coverage of just under 50% to maximize pollutant removal.

Free ammonia ($NH_3$-N) inhibition of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) has been widely studied for partial nitrification (or nitrite accumulation) and denitrification via nitrite ($NO_2^-$-N) as a low-cost treatment of ammonium containing wastewater. The literature on $NH_3$-N inhibition of NOB, however, shows disagreement about the threshold $NH_3$-N concentration and its degree of inhibition. In order to clarify the confusion, a simple and cheap respirometric method was devised to investigate the effect of free ammonia inhibition of NOB. Sludge samples from an autotrophic nitrifying reactor were exposed to various $NH_3$-N concentrations to measure the maximum specific nitrite oxidation rate ($\hat{K}_{NO}$) using a respirometer. NOB biomass was estimated from the yield values in the literature. Free ammonia inhibition of nitrite oxidizing bacteria was reversible and the specific nitrite oxidation rate ($K_{NO}$) decreased from 0.141 to 0.116, 0.100, 0.097 and 0.081 mg $NO_2^-$-N/mg NOB h, respectively, as the $NH_3$-N concentration increased from 0.0 to 1.0, 4.1, 9.7 and 22.9 mg/L. A nonlinear regression based on the noncompetitive inhibition mode gave an estimate of the Inhibition concentration ($K_I$) of free ammonia to be 21.3 mg $NH_3$-N/L. Previous studies gave $\hat{K}_{NO}$ of Nitrobacter and Nitrospira as 0.120 and 0.032 mg/mg VSS h. The free ammonia concentration which inhibits Nitrobacter was $30{\sim}50\;mg$$NH_3$-N/L and Nitrospira was inhibited at $0.04{\sim}0.08\;mg$$NH_3$-N/L. The results support the fact that Nitrobacter is the dominant NOB in the reactor. The variations in the reported values of free ammonia inhibition may be due to the different species of nitrite oxidizers present in the reactors. The respirometric method provides rapid and reliable analysis of the behavior and community of the nitrite oxidizing bacteria.

PCR-DGGE method was applied to analyze changes of microbial community in simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) bioreactor with various DO concentrations. In the analysis of eubacterial community, band profiles of DGGE were similar with 2 or 1 mg/L DO concentrations in the reactor. Experimental results led to 16 different bacteria being identified, including 5 dominant strains(3 strains of Uncultured Bacterium, 1 strains of Bacillus, 1 strains of Uncultured Bacteroidetes). DGGE results at 0.5 mg/L DO concentration led to 12 strains being identified, including 7 dominant strains(5 strains of Uncultured Bacterium, 2 strains of Zoogloea sp.). DGGE results at 0.1 mg/L DO concentration led to 11 strains being identified, including 3 dominant strains(1 strains of Uncultured Bacterium, 2 strains of Zoogloea sp.). In DGGE band profiles of $\beta$-AOB($\beta$-Ammonia Oxidizing Bacteria), only one band was observed. This band had 97% similarity with Nitrosomonas sp. done DNB Y20. This band was clearly observed at the 2, 1 and 0.5 mg/L DO concentrations, while the brightness of the band at 0.1 mg/L DO concentration was mostly dimmed. In DGGE band profiles of denitrification process, 5 bands(3 strains of Uncultured organism containing nirS, 2 strains of Uncultured organism containing nirK) were observed. Among those bands, the brightness of one band was gradually increased at the lower DO concentrations. This band has 86% identity with Uncultured organism clone eS1 cd1 nirS gene, partial cds. Based on this result, it could be concluded that Uncultured organism clone eS1 cd1 nirS gene, partial cds is a predominant microorganism in the denitrification process.
The aim of this paper is to correlate the release characteristics of marine and lake sediment with their vicinal oxic conditions. We performed lab-scale simulation experiments using field sediment and water in order to compare the release concentrations and the release rates one another. To provide a few different kinds of oxic environments we used natural air flow and some oxygen releasing compounds such as $CaO_2$ and $MgO_2$. In case of phosphates, in each oxic condition, removal of phosphorus via biological activity and that via salt precipitation with the metal ions lowered the release rates. The behavior of the nitrogen-origin salts seemed to greatly depend on the typical biological actions - growth of biomass, nitrification, and partial denitrification. Generally speaking, the control of releases of $NH_3$-N, $PO_4$-P, T-N and T-P was successful under the oxic conditions meanwhile COD, nitrates and nitrites were difficult to reduce the releases into the bulk water because of the considerable microbial oxidation. Based on typical diffusive mass transfer kinetics the changes of concentrations of the nutrients were computed for qualitative and quantitative comparisons.

Two nitrite oxidizing bacteria, NOB1 and NOB2, were isolated from anaerobic digester liquer of food wastewater and analyzed for their growth characteristics and the ability to oxidize nitrite under different temperature, pH, and DO( dissolved oxygen) concentrations. Both of the isolated strains have shown the best growth at pH 7.0 and at $35^{\circ}C$, and also shown higher growth rate with the increasing dissolved oxygen concentrations. As the factors to restrict the growth of these strains, parameters such as pH and DO were found to be effective ones, by increasing (up to 9.0) or decreasing pH (up to 5.0), or lowing DO below 1.0 ppm. Especially, the ability to oxidize nitrite in both strains was about 50% lower in below 1.0 ppm of DO than above of 1.0 ppm. NOB2 was found to be two times greater in both the growth rate and the nitrite-oxidizing ability than NOB1.

The bacterial diversity inherent to the biofilm community structure of a modified rotating biological contactor wastewater treatment process, referred to as the Rotating Activated Bacillus Contactor (RABC) process, was characterized in this study, via both culture-dependent and culture-independent methods. On the basis of culture-dependent methods, Bacillus sp. were found to exist in large numbers on the biofilm (6.5% of the heterotrophic bacteria) and the microbial composition of the biofilms was quite simple. Only three phyla were identified-namely, the Proteobacteria, the Actinobacteria (High G+C Gram-positive bacteria), and the Firmicutes (Low G+C Gram-positive bacteria). The culture-independent partial 16S rDNA sequence analysis revealed a considerably more diverse microbial composition within the biofilms. A total of eight phyla were recovered in this case, three of which were major groups: the Firmicutes (43.9%), the Proteobacteria (28.6%), and the Bacteroidetes (17.6%). The remaining five phyla were minor groups: the Planctomycetes (4.4%), the Chlorobi (2.2%), the Actinobacteria (1.1%), the Nitrospirae (1.1%), and the Verrucomicrobia (1.1%). The two most abundant genera detected were the endospore-forming bacteria (31.8%), Clostridium and Bacillus, both of which are members of the Firmicutes phylum. This finding indicates that these endospore-forming bacteria successfully colonized and dominated the RABC process biofilms. Many of the colonies or clones recovered from the biofilms evidenced significantly high homology in the 16S rDNA sequences of bacteria stored in databases associated with advanced wastewater treatment capabilities, including nitrification and denitrification, phosphorus accumulation, the removal of volatile odors, and the removal of chlorohydrocarbons or heavy metals. The microbial community structures observed in the biofilms were found to correlate nicely with the enhanced performance of advanced wastewater treatment protocols.

The complete oxidation of ammonia to nitrate is a distinctive two-step process divided into the oxidation of ammonia to nitrite(nitritation) by Nitrosomonas and the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate(nitratation) by Nitrobacter. The nitrogen removal via nitrite accumulation offers several advantages such as saving costs for aeration, saving carbon source and finally reduction of sludge discharge. In this work a suspended bioreactor coupled with membrane filtration(MBR) was used to find the process conditions of nitrite build-up. The MBR enables to reach sufficient nitrifying bacteria in the bioreactor, although the autotrophic bacteria can be easily washed out due to their lower growth rate. The dissolved oxygen concentration $c'_{O2}$ and ammonia concentration $c_{NH3}$ in the reactor were varied and investigated as parameters for nitrite accumulation. As a result the higher ammonia concentration in the reactor is very effective for starting nitrite build-up and the effect was strengthened in combination with lower dissolved oxygen concentration. With lower $c'_{O2}<0.3$$mgL^{-1}$$O_2$ and high $c_{NH3}=6.3\sim14.9$$mgL^{-1}$$NH_3N$ the 74% of the nitrite accumulation was achieved. Specially, it was found that the nitrite accumulation could occur not only in biofilm reactor as many references showed but also in the membrane bioreactor carried out in this study.
