Designer-User Interaction without Actual Users: A Lesson from a Field Study

  • The purpose of the paper is empirically to explore 'design manner', focusing on the designer's knowledge boundary on the designer-user interactions in the design process. This study conducts a field study and observed designer's interactions with actual users in a leading user-centered design firm over three months. The observations revealed how designers bring ideas about users into design without physically interacting with users during the design process. Based on Bourdieu's theory of practice and the concept of boundary objects, this study introduces the concept of 'design manner', by which designers incorporate user's ideas into the design process without actual involvement of users in the process. This paper contributes to the body of knowledge by introducing the design manner in-between designer's and user's knowledge boundaries and argue bridge between theoretical and actual designer-user interactions in the IS design process.

텍스트 마이닝 기법을 활용한 SNS 상에서 우울감을 언급한 도시공원 이용자의 이용행태 분석 (Analysis of Use Behavior of Urban Park Users Expressing Depression on Social Media Using Text Mining Technique)

  • 본 연구는 COVID-19 대유행에 의한 우울감과 공원 이용행태의 관계를 온라인상에 게시된 공원 이용에 대한 게시물을 이용하여 분석하고자 하였다. COVID-19 방역이 활발해진 기간 동안 네이버와 다음의 블로그 및 카페에서 '공원'과 '우울'을 포함한 텍스트 데이터를 수집하여 텍스트 마이닝(Text Mining)과 소셜 네트워크(Social Network)분석을 하였다. 연구결과, 우울감을 언급한 공원 이용자는 '보다', '산책/걷다', '먹다'의 이용행태를 주로 보였고, 소통 행태인 '보다'를 중심으로 다른 이용행태들이 연결되는 것으로 나타났다. CONCOR 분석 결과, 소통 행태 및 동적 행태의 군집의 경우, 단일 행태 유형으로 군집이 형성되어, 우울감을 언급한 이용자는 공원을 소통활동과 신체활동을 위한 공간으로 인식하는 경향이 나타났다. COVID-19의 대유행으로 소통활동과 신체활동의 결핍이 증가되었고 공원에서 이를 해소하려는 것으로 해석되었다. 또한 우울감의 발생으로 상대적으로 소극적인 이용행태가 주요한 이용행태로 나타났다. 본 연구결과는 도시민에게 효과적인 공원의 조성 및 관리 계획에 유용할 것으로 판단되었다. 후속 연구에서 COVID-19 대유행과 우울감의 유무를 연계한 공원 이용자의 이용행태 분석이 필요한 것으로 판단되었다.

The effects of Internet addiction on the lifestyle and dietary behavior of Korean adolescents

  • We performed this study to examine lifestyle patterns and dietary behavior based on the level of Internet addiction of Korean adolescents. Data were collected from 853 Korean junior high school students. The level of Internet addiction was determined based on the Korean Internet addiction self-scale short form for youth, and students were classified as high-risk Internet users, potential-risk Internet users, and no risk Internet users. The associations between the students' levels of Internet addiction and lifestyle patterns and dietary behavior were analyzed using a chi-square test. Irregular bedtimes and the use of alcohol and tobacco were higher in high-risk Internet users than no risk Internet users. Moreover, in high-risk Internet users, irregular dietary behavior due to the loss of appetite, a high frequency of skipping meals, and snacking might cause imbalances in nutritional intake. Diet quality in high-risk Internet users was also worse than in potential-risk Internet users and no risk Internet users. We demonstrated in this study that high-risk Internet users have inappropriate dietary behavior and poor diet quality, which could result in stunted growth and development. Therefore, nutrition education targeting high-risk Internet users should be conducted to ensure proper growth and development.

통신 방송 융합 환경에서의 T-Commerce 수용 모델에 관한 연구 (Understanding the Adoption of T-Commerce in Telecommunications-Broadcasting Convergence Environment)

  • Telecommunications-broadcasting convergence in the domain of IT is a representative phenomenon that is expected to provide the saturated existing markets with a new source of profit. Especially, T-Commerce combines familiarity of TV and immediacy of the Internet which are expected to cover all the users familiar with each media and expand the existing commercial transactions. Telecommunications-broadcasting convergence in Korea, however, is focusing on technical and regulatory aspects so that research on the real users is not up to the mark yet. This is the most fundamental problem in hampering growth in the corresponding service and market. Thus, we are proposing an adoption model on T-Commerce to rapidly expand the convergence service through understanding the potential users. Perceived utilitarian and hedonic values, perceived interactivity, media substitution and personal innovativeness have been examined as the factors influencing the users' intention to adopt a new convergence service. As a result of empirical analysis, it is verified that perceived utilitarian and hedonic values and personal innovativeness directly influenced the users' intention to adopt whereas perceived interactivity had indirect affect on them. T-Commerce service providers should not only emphasize on the benefit that the older media could not provide the users with, but also provide them with more pleasure and entertaining experience during the course of satisfying the users' needs to distinguish T-Commerce from the other existing media.

모바일 애플리케이션 업데이트 선택에 대한 사용자 후회 (User's Regret on Update Decisions of Mobile Applications)

  • Purpose While new versions of mobile applications could offer users better computing environment, users are not always comfortable with them for various reasons. Considering making update decisions is important task for users, it is crucial for us to understand users' behavior and attitude on app updates. The purpose of this study is to explain why mobile users succumb to both reactance toward the update and satisfaction to the current version, ultimately leading them to feel the regret by employing three theoretical perspectives including regret theory, status quo bias theory and the dual model. Design/methodology/approach Survey data collected from 204 mobile users was used to test the research model using partial least squares analysis. The results have shown that both reactance toward the update and satisfaction to the current version have negative impacts on individuals' decisions to update, which leading to their regret after updating the applications Findings By integrating both status quo bias and regret theory in the model, this study tried to explain why mobile users feel regret in application update settings. More specifically, this study has proposed a novel framework that introduces an individual's update decision on mobile applications.

사행성 게임 이용자의 문제도박 예측 구조모형 (Testing a Model to Predict Problem Gambling in Speculative Game Users)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to develop and test a model for predicting problem gambling in speculative game users based on Blaszczynski and Nower's pathways model of problem and pathological gambling. Methods: The participants were 262 speculative game users recruited from seven speculative gambling places located in Seoul, Gangwon, and Gyeonggi, Korea. They completed a structured self-report questionnaire comprising measures of problem gambling, negative emotions, attentional impulsivity, motor impulsivity, non-planning impulsivity, gambler's fallacy, and gambling self-efficacy. Structural Equation Modeling was used to test the hypothesized model and to examine the direct and indirect effects on problem gambling in speculative game users using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 20.0 programs. Results: The hypothetical research model provided a reasonable fit to the data. Negative emotions, motor impulsivity, gambler's fallacy, and gambling self-efficacy had direct effects on problem gambling in speculative game users, while indirect effects were reported for negative emotions, motor impulsivity, and gambler's fallacy. These predictors explained 75.2% problem gambling in speculative game users. Conclusion: The findings suggest that developing intervention programs to reduce negative emotions, motor impulsivity, and gambler's fallacy, and to increase gambling self-efficacy in speculative game users are needed to prevent their problem gambling.

Study on the development of convergent services for efficient medical consultation, tourism and interpretation

  • Globally, medical tourism draws attention as a national growth engine industry, and is actively expanding. Current medical tourism leans towards large hospitals making it difficult to attract new users. Users collect the information for medical tourism through various paths in order to receive medical consultations and customized tour services. To expand medical tourism to small and medium sized hospitals, it is necessary to have customized medical consultations, tours and interpreter services, which are the key elements of medical tourism. This paper suggests services that users can use to match medical consultations and find tours and interpreters they want at the same time. This paper suggests ways to provide integrated services based on the information experienced by users, combining the required items from the perspectives of each user, hospital and guide. To match the content provided by hospitals and guides with experience information from users systematically, this study suggests the convergence plan for a service model that can match the experience information between users and hospitals, between users and guides and between hospitals and guides systematically by operating the data in the universal container.

  • 내장산국립공원 내장사지구의 이용객심리행태 및 환경에 대한 이용객영향을 조사하기 위해서 3개의 주요피크닉지역에서 설문조사와 순간밀도조사를, 주요통과지점에서 출입객 수 조사를 하였으며 환경영향은 실측조사를 하였다. 총탐방객 수는 1984년부터 100만명/연 수준으로 안정을 보이고 있었다. 환경영향은 등산로와 케이블카 종점부근, 전망대와 금선계곡간 사면에서 매우 심하였다. 봄철 피크시에는 약 5,000명, 가을 단풍철 피크시에는 약 53,000 명이 동시에 체류하는 것으로 추정되었다. 총입장객 중 약20% 가금선 및 원적계곡을 이용하였고, 나머지 80%는 잔디광장, 케이블카만 이용하고 퇴장하는 것으로 나타났다. 이용특성은 원거리형 국립공원형이었으며, 가을철 단풍구경이 주이용동기이었다. 이용면적증가에 따른 이용객의 만족도는 유의하게 차이를 나타내지 않았으며, 직각회전방법에 의한 인자분석결과, 이용객의 만족도에 크게 영향을 미치는 제1인자는 주변경관에 관한 인자로 자연파괴, 혼잡도, 소음, 주변청결상태 순으로 부하되어 있었다. 다음으로 영향을 미치는 제2인자는 시설관리인자로서 화장실 수, 쓰레기통 수, 식수량, 안전성 순으로 부하되어 있었다.

계절 및 회원 특성이 공공자전거 통행에 미치는 영향분석 : 서울시 따릉이를 대상으로 (Effects of Seasonal and Membership Characteristics on Public Bicycle Traffic : Focusing on the Seoul Bike)

  • PURPOSES : Seoul introduced public bicycles to reduce environmental pollution and create a healthy society. Because the use of bicycles is highly weather dependent, and bicycles are rented by the people, member characteristics and seasonal influences should be considered. This study analyzed bicycle traffic characteristics considering seasonal and member characteristics and highlighted some implications. METHODS : The Yeouido and Sangam districts, which have multiple business districts, were taken as the areas of interest. In order to reflect seasonal and membership characteristics, the traffic volume, time of use, and characteristics of each zone were categorized by season (spring, summer, autumn, winter) and membership type (season, daily, group). In addition, we analyzed the pattern of traffic volume and usage time according to the traffic purpose after separating rental locations into residential, business, subway, and park, reflecting the land characteristics. RESULTS : The results revealed that seasonal characteristics were high for bicycle traffic, time of use, and occupancy rate for park locations in spring and autumn. In terms of membership characteristics, group and daily users appeared as major visitors for park locations, and the trends of commuter pass users showed that bicycle use meets the purpose of introducing public bicycles. CONCLUSIONS : Traffic characteristics differed according to seasonal and membership characteristics. It is necessary to involve and extend the users of the commuter pass. Situations in which commuter pass users cannot function as a group or in which daily users monopolize bicycles (especially near parks, near subway stations, etc.) must be avoided.

Conjoint Choice Model을 이용한 주제공원 이용자들의 선택행동 연구 (A Study on the Theme Park Users's Choice behavior: Application of Conjoint Choice Model)

  • The purposes of this study are two folds: a) to introduce conjoint choice model to research the choice behavior of theme park users, and b) to suggest the strategies to strengthen the competitiveness of theme parks. The major four theme parks in Seoul metropolitan areas were selected as study areas. A leading polling agency was employed to select 432 respondents by probability sampling and to conduct face-to-face interview. Both alternative generating and choice set generating fractional factorial design were conducted simultaneously to meet the necessary and sufficient conditions for calibration of the conjoint choice model. Dummy coding was used to represent the attribute levels, and the alternative-specific model was calibrated. The goodness-of-fit of the model was quite satisfactory($\rho$$^2$=0.47950), and most parameters values had to expected sign and magnitude. Car was preferred transport mode to shuttle bus for visiting theme parks ; however the most ideal attribute levels only were estimated significantly. Most attribute levels of shuttle bus were estimated significantly except the Dream Land, which is the least attractive park among study areas. Simulation results showed that the shuttle bus was a mode worth providing to switch the current car dominant visiting pattern of theme parks, which will be one the effective strategies to attract more patrons, especially for potential users adjacent to parks. Several ideals were suggested for future researches, in terms of utilization of more general utility function and new base alternative, and inclusion of more salient attributes such as constraints in the model.
