  • In this study, we investigated the main characteristics of off-gas generated from melting process and off-gas treatment system operation example to provide some primary data for commercial vitrification facility design. The purpose of vitrification facility operation is to treat hazardous materials in the radioactive wastes and harmful off-gas containing a variety of chemical species generated in the glass melting process. Constructing and operating vitrification facility essentially need to be licensed through safety analysis; it is very important to treat radionuclide and hazardous materials below the legal environment emissions regulation level. We must accurately understand the characteristics of off-gas and apply an appropriate off-gas treatment process accordingly. Thus, to design the appropriate off-gas treatment there must be a wide range of elements taken into account such as characteristics of waste and melter, regulation guidance of off-gas, characteristics of generated off-gas and off-gas treatment system performance assessment.

  • The low and intermediate-level radioactive waste generated in Korea is disposed of at Wolsong Disposal Facility. For the safety of a disposal facility, it must be assessed by considering some abnormal scenarios including human intrusion as well as those by natural phenomena. The human intrusion scenario is a scenario that an incognizant man of the disposal facility will be occurred by the drilling. In this paper, the well usage scenario was classified into the human intrusion event as the probability of the well drilling is very low during the man's lifecycle and then was assessed by using conservative assumptions. This scenario was assessed using the dilution factor of contaminants released from a disposal facility and then it was introduced the applied methodology in this study. The assessed scenario using this methodology is satisfied the regulatory limits.

  • This study quantified the flood reduction effect of small stormwater detention facilities by the NRCS curve number. The modified rational equation was used to calculate the inflow volume into the detention facilities. The NRCS curve number in the cases w/ and w/o storage facility was calculated with respect to the rainfall characteristics(rainfall frequency, duration) and the size of storage facilities. Finally, diagrams showing the curve number reduction rate versus the size of storage facility were developed. The diagrams can be used to evaluate the flood reduction effect of storage facility reasonably and efficiently when estimating the optimal location and size of storage facility. The results based on the methodology propsed in this study were also compared with those of previous study for their validation.

  • Recently, the seabed facility is gradually being increased based on the development of harbor and the coastal area. However, the comparison between the survey data with the chart still shows the significant differences leading to various disasters over sea accident. Therefore, in this study, the investigation on the seabed facility were performed in 5 areas through an accuracy analysis using an up-to-date surveying equipment(MBES, SSS and SBP). Based on the study more systematic management on the seabed facility, more accurate method on the surveying, and some considerations on the related policies are suggested. Through the study, we obtained more accurate measurement on depth and seabed piping forms in Jakdo and Pyong-tack, on sunken ship in a Mok-po, on seabed crater in Je-ju. In addition, it was possible to present the method for the construction of information infra and a connection with the seabed facility. The criteria on the equipment's specification, surveying method and procedures are set by the experiments and the investigation and surveying accuracy on the seabed facilities are also suggested.

  • This paper introduces a facility simulation system for efficient error detection of smart factories. The facility simulation system, which can infer and solve errors autonomously when analyzing the relationship between plant facilities, is one of the important technologies for constructing a smart factory with high productivity. In order to implement this autonomic control system, it is necessary to be able to identify the status of facilities and analyze the relationship between facilities through the data of factory facilities. Therefore, in this paper, we design and develop a simulation program that can detect the equipment that causes the process error when an error occurs based on the process scenario using the defined equipment status. The simulation shows that the error inference process based on the process map and facility status is more efficient than the general error inference process. This simulation program provides an intuitive view of the reasoning and resolution of facility failures.

  • This study aims to measure in-patients' willingness to choose the same hospital, and to define the related factors. The willingness was measured by the fact whether in-patients would return to the same hospital for their future hospitalization and can be said as the essence of ascertaining patients' satisfaction. Data was collected from 236 patients hospitalized in two hospitals selected according to its superiority, one being superior in medical technique, the other being superior in facility and equipment. To enhance the comparability between the two hospitals, the department and the diagnosis were matched, and structured questionnaires were self-fill-up. The main findings are as follows. Hospitals were analyzed by their superiority : medical services, facility and equipment. In case of hospitals with superior medical services, the willingness was proportional to positive doctor-patient relationship, to satisfaction with the medical level, and to the acknowledgement of utility in cure. In case of hospitals with superior facility and equipment, the willingness was proportional to the satisfactory state of overall facility. Two types of hospitals were combined and analyzed. The willingness for choosing hospitals with superior medical services was stronger than that for choosing the other hospitals. The satisfaction with overall facility, satisfaction with medical level, acknowledgement of utility in cure, positive doctor-patient relationship, and better consultation produced higher willingness to choose the same hospital. The willingness for the option shows to what degree the hospital suffices patients' expectation. Patients' understanding views were obviously influential. The satisfaction level for medical aspect was more influential than the level for non-medical aspect.

  • A lead slowing-down spectrometer (LSDS) system is a promising nondestructive assay technique that enables a quantitative measurement of the isotopic contents of major fissile isotopes in spent nuclear fuel and its pyroprocessing counterparts, such as $^{235}U$, $^{239}Pu$, $^{241}Pu$, and, potentially, minor actinides. The LSDS system currently under development at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (Daejeon, Korea) is planned to utilize a high-flux ($>10^{12}n/cm^2{\cdot}s$) neutron source comprised of a high-energy (30 MeV)/high-current (~2 A) electron beam and a heavy metal target, which results in a very intense and complex radiation field for the facility, thus demanding structural shielding to guarantee the safety. Optimization of the structural shielding design was conducted using MCNPX for neutron dose rate evaluation of several representative hypothetical designs. In order to satisfy the construction cost and neutron attenuation capability of the facility, while simultaneously achieving the aimed dose rate limit (< $0.06{\mu}Sv/h$), a few shielding materials [high-density polyethylene (HDPE)eBorax, $B_4C$, and $Li_2CO_3$] were considered for the main neutron absorber layer, which is encapsulated within the double-sided concrete wall. The MCNP simulation indicated that HDPE-Borax is the most efficient among the aforementioned candidate materials, and the combined thickness of the shielding layers should exceed 100 cm to satisfy the dose limit on the outside surface of the shielding wall of the facility when limiting the thickness of the HDPE-Borax intermediate layer to below 5 cm. However, the shielding wall must include the instrumentation and installation holes for the LSDS system. The radiation leakage through the holes was substantially mitigated by adopting a zigzag-shape with concrete covers on both sides. The suggested optimized design of the shielding structure satisfies the dose rate limit and can be used for the construction of a facility in the near future.

  • For the past two decades, 3D/4D CAD research has heel mainly focused on the design and construction phase of a facility life-cycle. However, there has been a general notion that the strength of 3D/4D CAD lends itself to other phases such as planning, operation and maintenance. In this research, a 3D/4D CAD model was generated in a commercial software platform. Then, the traditional 1:fe cycle facility management procedures are reviewed to, see any possible improvement opportunity with the 3D/4D CAD model as an example. A focus group interview, in conjuction with an extensive literature review, produced the list of area where 3D/4D CAD model could significantly benefit the traditional life cycle facility practices. Finally, a questionnaire-based survey was conducted with 155 respondents to statistically verify the feasibility of 3D/4D CAD for life cycle facility management.
