  • To match the requirements of heterogeneous mobile devices, video objects may be transcoded, which requires considerable CPU resources. Alternatively, multiple versions of the same video may be stored on servers, but this requires a lot of disk space. We formulate the trade-off between the versions that are stored on disk and the need for transcoding. We propose an optimal solution to this formulation based on dynamic programming. Experiments show that our scheme allows up to 68% more clients to be admitted than conventional schemes when a reasonable amount of storage is available.

  • In order to measure the acoustic amplification factor of an Al/HTPB propellant, T-burner tests using pulsed DB/AB method were conducted. In the experiment, powdered aluminum content was varied to a certain extent. Simultaneous ignition on the internal surface of a propellant was achieved by the use of a fast ignition disk. From the experimental data, the damping factor for a non-zero aluminum content could not be calculated due to the fast attenuation of perturbed pressure. Therefore, the addition of aluminum particle was more than sufficient to stabilize pressure-coupled instability.

  • We observed 10 Class I sources as part of the IGRINS (Immersion GRating INfrared Spectroscoph) Legacy Program, "IGRINS Survey of Protoplanetary Disks (PI: Jeong-Eun Lee)". Unlike other Class I sources, IRAS 16316-1540 shows broad absorption features in the near-infrared spectra (H and K bands). The broadened absorption features have been detected toward FU Orionis-type objects. Boxy or double-peaked absorption profiles can be produced by a Keplerian disk that has the hot mid-plane heated by a burst mass accretion. We could fit the broad absorption features of IRAS 16316-1540 with a K5 V template stellar spectrum convolved with a disk rotation profile of 45 km s-1. Therefore, rotationally broadened absorption features detected in this Class I source suggest that the episodic accretion process occurs from the early stage of star formation.

  • This paper investigates how intentional mistuning of bladed disks reduces their sensitivity to unintentional random mistuning. The class of intentionally mistuned disks considered here is limited, for cost reasons, to arrangements of two types of blades (A and B, say). A two-step procedure is then described to optimize the arrangement of these blades around the disk to reduce the effects of unintentional random mistuning. First, a pure optimization effort is undertaken to obtain the pattern (s) of the A and B blades that yields small/the smallest value of the largest amplitude of response to a given excitation in the absence of unintentional random mistuning using Genetic Algorithm. Then, in the second step, a qualitative/quantitative estimate of the sensitivity for the optimized intentionally mistuned bladed disks with respect to unintentional random mistuning is performed by analyzing their amplification factor, probability density function and passband/stopband structures. Examples of application with simple bladed disk models demonstrate the significant benefits of using this class of intentionally mistuned disks.

  • A new method for the electrostatic suspension of disk-shaped objects is proposed which is based on a time-optimal control scheme and deploys only high-voltage power supplies that can deliver dc voltages of positive and/or negative polarity. This method possesses the unique feature that no high-voltage amplifiers are needed which leads to a remarkable system simplification and objects can be suspended stably even in vacuum environment. Using this scheme, an aluminium disk used in a 3.5-inch HDD was suspended stably at an airgap of 0.3mm.

  • We obtain the mathematical model of the hard disk drive actuator system from the system response data of the finite element analysis or experimental results. System response data including the dynamics of the considered system are expressed as the mathematical model. It allows the dynamic analysis of the actuator system without resort to the repetitive finite element modeling work. Even though the dynamic characteristics of the system are affected somewhat by the structural modification and the change of the dynamic properties, we can use the modified size and material properties of the actuator system in the mathematical model to some extent. In this study, we express the mathematical model of the simplified rectangular plate first and then proceed to the actual hard disk drive actuator system.

  • In this study, the experimental modal analysis is performed to investigate the dynamic characteristics of slider-air bearings in hard disk drives. Bump response of the slider is acquired by measuring the relative velocity for two points using the laser interferometer, in which the disk is scratched lightly by a sharp knife to make a bump. From the measurements, the modal parameters of the head slider, modal frequencies and damping ratios of roll and pitch, are estimated by data processing and parameter estimation.

  • There are 5 kinds of architectural fabrics in our country recently. The test piece were made by attaching on the steel disk which has been tested of various range of the test conditions in pin-on-disk wear testing machine. The results show that the friction coefficient and wear rate of the architectural fabrics are heavily dependent on the load and materials. PVDF type was better than others in wear rate and friction coefficient.

  • Using numerical hydrodynamics code RAMSES, we perform idealized galaxy merger simulations and study the star formation of merging disk galaxies. In our simulations, we consider the active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback effect. In order to investigate the star formation influenced by AGN, we run ~60 simulations with various initial conditions. We confirm that star formation is more efficiently suppressed in merging galaxies than in isolated galaxies. In the mergers, AGN effect is more significant when the masses of two galaxies are similar. Furthermore, we find that bulge fraction does not affect the star formation when the AGN effect is considered. We discuss the implications on semi-analytic galaxy formation models and the limitation of the current AGN prescriptions.

  • Unipoled piezoelectric transformers were designed with different input and output area ratios. The voltage step-up ratio increased proportionally with increasing the input area. The piezoelectric transformers operated in each transformer's resonance vibration mode. In this paper, ANSYS(FEM program) was used for analysing piezoelectric transformers. We compared with analysis and experimental results. The voltage step-up ratio showed maximum value in output area of small size. Output characteristics of piezoelectric transformers with various size were simulated. The result of analysis showed 2~7 times higher voltage step-up ratio than a experiment result.
