  • Traditional queueing analyses are very useful for designing a network's capacity and predicting their performances, however most of the predicted results from the queueing analyses are quite different from the realistic measured performance. And recent empirical studies on LAN, WAN, and VBR traffic characteristic have indicated that the models used in the traditional Poisson assumption cannot properly predict the real traffic properties due to underestimation of the long-range dependence of network traffics and self-similar properties. In this paper, It is also shown that the self-similar traffic reflects real Ethernet traffic characteristics by comparing Pareto-like ON/OFF source model which is exactly self-similar model to the traditional Poisson model. It is also performed optimization design and performance analysis of ATM network using Internet traffic characteristics.

  • Optical packet switching is a promising technology, which can integrate both data and optical network. In this paper, we present a comparative study of various traffic arrival approaches in WDM packet switches. The comparison is made based on packet loss rate and average delay under uniform and self-similar Pareto traffic. Computer simulations are performed in order to obtain the switch performance metrics. Study shows that burstiness of data traffic has a strong negative impact in the performance of WDM packet switches.

  • MANET(Mobile Ad Hoc Network) is the structure in which a source node communicates with a destination node by establishing a route with neighbor nodes without using the existing wired or wireless network. Therefore, the routing protocol for MANET must correspond well to changes in the channel state of moving nodes, and should have simple operation, high reliability, and no routing loop. In this paper, the simulation was perform by using a traffic model with on/off two states provided by the NS-3 network simulator. Also, the duration of the ON state and the duration of the OFF state used the traffic where inter arrival time of data is irregular by generating random values with constant, exponential distribution, and Pareto distribution. The performance of the DSDV, OLSR, and AODV protocols was compare and analyzed using the generated traffic model.

  • One of the economical ways to satisfy the quality of service desired by the user in a web service environment is to adjust the size of the object. To this end, this study finds the maximum size of objects that satisfy this constraint when the mean response time is given below an arbitrary threshold for quality of service. It can be inferred that in the steady state of system, the mean response time in the deterministic model by using the round-robin will be the same as that of the queueing model following the general distribution. Based on this, analytical formulas and procedures for finding the maximum object size are obtained. As a service distribution of web traffic, the Pareto distribution is appropriate, so the maximum object size is computed by applying the M/G(Pareto)/1 model and the M/G/1/PS model using exponential distribution as computational experience. Performance evaluation through numerical calculation shows that as the shape parameter in the Pareto distribution increases, the M/G(Pareto)/1 model and M/G/1/PS model have the same maximum object size. The results of this study can be used to environments where objects can be sized for economical web service control.

  • Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) is a channel access scheme adopted by the IEEE 802.11e draft standard for QoS-enabled wireless local area networks. It classifies traffic into separate Access Categories (ACs) and achieves service differentiation by allowing each AC to have its own values of channel access parameters. This paper proposes a scheme to dynamically adapt the EDCA parameters to traffic environment so that they both maximize the throughput of non real-time traffics and meet the delay and throughput constraints of real-time traffics. For this purpose, we develop a design algorithm for efficient exploration of the EDCA parameter space. Using the algorithm, we derive a Pareto curve fur delay-throughput trade-off in each anticipated traffic environment. The Pareto database can then be used to optimally adjust the parameter according to the traffic environment and administrative policies. Simulation results show that compared with the default parameter configuration, the proposed scheme is better for delay, throughput guarantee and can improve the throughput of non real-time traffics by 12% on average.

  • We consider the multi-objective optimization of a multi-service arrayed-waveguide grating-based single-hop metro WDM network with the two conflicting objectives of maximizing throughput while minimizing delay. We develop and evaluate a genetic algorithm based methodology for finding the optimal throughput-delay tradeoff curve, the so-called Pareto-optimal frontier. Our methodology provides the network architecture and the Medium Access Control protocol parameters that achieve the Pareto-optima in a computationally efficient manner. The numerical results obtained with our methodology provide the Pareto-optimal network planning and operation solution for a wide range of traffic scenarios. The presented methodology is applicable to other networks with a similar throughput-delay tradeoff.

  • As many researchers have been interested in Green IT, Energy Efficient Ethernet(EEE) with rate adaptation has recently begun to receive many attention. However, the rate adaptation scheme can have different energy efficiency and delay according to the characteristics of various traffic patterns. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the impact of different traffic patterns on the energy efficiency and delay in Ethernet with rate adaptation. To do this, firstly we design a rate adaptation simulator which consists of Poisson based traffic generator, Pareto distribution based ON-OFF generator and Ethernet node with rate adaptation by using OPNET Modeler. Using this simulator, we perform the simulation in view of the total number of switching, transmission rate reduction, energy saving ratio and average queueing delay. Simulation results show that IP traffic patterns with high self-similarity affect the number of switching, rate reduction and energy saving ratio. Additionally, the transition overhead is caused due to the high self-similar traffic.

  • The most popular world wide web traffic in the Internet uses TCP as the transport layer protocol. Since TCP utilizes the single path, it can not communicate with the correspondent host during the link-down. On the other hand, SCTP can still communicate with the other SCTP entity by using alternate path even while the primary path is down. Most of previous studies have conducted the performance comparison research between TCP and SCTP by using typical file transfer. Since web traffic with self-similarity is characterized by the packet inter-arrival times and shape parameter affecting the size of web file in the Pareto distribution, it is necessary to perform the experiments considering these parameters. This paper aims to compare the throughput between TCP and SCTP while varying parameters reflecting the web traffic characteristics in link-down environment. Experimental results for web traffic using NS-2 simulator show that the throughput of SCTP using multi-homing is better than that of TCP. Simulation also shows that TCP is more affected than SCTP by mean inter-arrival and shape parameters with regard to the web traffic. These results can be applied to estimate the performance variation of web traffic due to the duration of link-down.
