  • It is the objective of the present study to conduct correlation analysis for deriving control parameters in vertical shafts using the results obtain by the design of experiments in the preceding research. The control parameters are categorized into objective parameters, derived parameters, condition parameters, operation parameters, and sensing parameters. The maximum pressure in the shaft should be sufficiently small in order to maintain exhaust hood performance. The pressure variations between floors should also be minimized in order to maintain uniform exhaust performance between floors and to save energy for excessive pressure drop in the shaft. The standard deviation based on -4Pa is proposed as an objective parameter to control pressure in shafts. The correlation equation has been obtained between the standard deviation and the sensing parameters of outdoor temperature and the pressure at the top of the shaft.

  • Enhanced approach using computational and experimental method is proposed and performed to describe very well the behavior of loudspeaker than conventional method. Proposed procedure is composed of four parts. First, Thiele-Small parameters for test loudspeaker are identified by an electrical impedance method like as a delta mass method. Second part includes the processes to measure physical properties. Physical data like masses and thicknesses of loudspeaker's components are measured by an electrical precision scale and a digital vernier caliper. Third, the identified Thiele-Small parameters are proposed to be used as load boundary conditions for vibration analysis instead of electromagnetic circuit analysis to get a driving force upon bobbin part. Also, these parameters and physical data are used to modify physical properties required for computation to accommodate simulated sound pressure level with measured one for loudspeaker enclosure system. These data like as Young's modulus and thickness for a diaphragm are required for vibration analysis of loudspeaker but not measured accurately. Finally, it was investigated that simulated sound pressure level with full acoustic modeling including an acoustic port for test loudspeaker agreed with experimental result very well in the midrange frequency band(from 100 Hz to 2,000 Hz). In addition, several design parametric study is performed to grasp acoustical behaviors of loudspeaker system due to variations of diaphragm thicknesses and shapes of dust cap.

  • Daylight is highly beneficial for improving the indoor environmental quality and reducing building energy consumption, daylighting applications are scarcely considered, especially during the care facility design process, because of lack of previous studies on elderly- light environment and complex simulation process. Therefore, daylighting process were performed using ECOTECT, which has various advantage such as easy user interface and simple simulation processes. Moreover, dynamic daylight simulation were performed using whether data. Static simulation are performed to compute static metrics such as daylight factor, whereas dynamic simulation are performed for dynamic metrics such as daylight autonomy and useful daylight illuminance using annual weather data On the basis of daylight autonomy and useful daylight illuminance analysis result, variations in annual daylight performances. A parametric and regression analysis of the window-to-wall ratio and visible transmittance showed that daylight factor, daylight autonomy increased with window-to-wall ratio and visible transmittance. It can be concluded that this new daylight criteria. useful daylight illuminance, will enable architect to obtain better fenestration design.

  • This paper presents the results of experimental and numerical model analyses on partially encased composite columns under concentric loads. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of replacing the conventional longitudinal and transverse steel bars by welded wire mesh on the structural behavior of these members under concentric loads. To achieve these goals experimental tests on four specimens of partially encased composite columns submitted to axial loading were performed and the results were promising in terms of replacing the traditional reinforcement by steel meshes. In addition, a numerical FE model was developed using the software DIANA$^{(R)}$ with FX+. The experimental results were used to validate the numerical model. Satisfactory agreement between experimental and numerical results was observed in both capacity and deformability of the composite columns. Despite of the simplifying assumptions of perfect bond between steel and concrete, the numerical model adequately represented the columns behavior. A finite element parametric study was performed and parameters including thickness of the steel profile and the concrete and steel strengths were evaluated. The parametrical study results found no significant changes in the partially encased columns behavior due to variations of the steel profile thickness or yield strength. However, significant changes in the post peak behavior were observed when using high strength concrete and these results suggest a change in the failure mode.

  • Single span historic bridges often contain non-prismatic members identified with a varying depth along their span lengths. Commonly, the symmetric parabolic height variations having the constant haunch length ratio of 0.5 have been selected to lower the stresses at the high bending moment points and to maintain the deflections within the acceptable limits. Due to their non-prismatic geometrical configuration, their assessment, particularly the computation of fixed-end horizontal forces (FEFs) and fixed-end moments (FEMs) becomes a complex problem. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the behavior of non-prismatic beams with symmetrical parabolic haunches (NBSPH) having the constant haunch length ratio of 0.5 using finite element analyses (FEA). FEFs and FEMs due to vertical loadings as well as the stiffness coefficients and the carry-over factors were computed through a comprehensive parametric study using FEA. It was demonstrated that the conventional methods using frame elements can lead to significant errors, and the deviations can reach to unacceptable levels for these types of structures. Despite the robustness of FEA, the generation of FEFs and FEMs using the nodal outputs of the detailed finite element mesh still remains an intricate task. Therefore, this study advances to propose effective formulas and dimensionless estimation coefficients to predict the FEFs, FEMs, stiffness coefficients and carry-over factors with reasonable accuracy for the analysis and re-evaluation of the NBSPH. Using the proposed approach, the fixed-end reactions due to vertical loads, and also the stiffness coefficients and the carry-over factors of the NBSPH can be determined without necessitating the detailed FEA.

  • This paper examines the ice cover effects on the seismic response of concrete gravity dam-reservoir-foundation interaction systems subjected to a horizontal earthquake ground motion. ANSYS program is used for finite element modeling and analyzing the ice-dam-reservoir-foundation interaction system. The ice-dam-reservoir interaction system is considered by using the Lagrangian (displacementbased) fluid and solid-quadrilateral-isoparametric finite elements. The Sariyar concrete gravity dam in Turkey is selected as a numerical application. The east-west component of Erzincan earthquake, which occurred on 13 March 1992 in Erzincan, Turkey, is selected for the earthquake analysis of the dam. Dynamic analyses of the dam-reservoir-foundation interaction system are performed with and without ice cover separately. Parametric studies are done to show the effects of the variation of the length, thickness, elasticity modulus and density of the ice-cover on the seismic response of the dam. It is observed that the variations of the length, thickness, and elasticity modulus of the ice-cover influence the displacements and stresses of the coupled system considerably. Also, the variation of the density of the ice-cover cannot produce important effects on the seismic response of the dam.

  • Parametric life-cycle cost(LCC) models have been integrated with traditional design tools, and used in prior work to demonstrate the rapid solution of holistic, analytical tradeoffs between detailed design variations. During early designs stages there may be competing concepts with dramatic differences. Additionally, detailed information is scarce, and decisions must be models. for a diverse range of concepts, and the lack of detailed information make the integration make the integration of traditional LCC models impractical. This paper explores an approximate method for providing preliminary life-cycle cost. Learning algorithms trained using the known characteristics of existing products be approximated quickly during conceptual design without the overhead of defining new models. Artificial neural networks are trained to generalize on product attributes and life cycle cost date from pre-existing LCC studies. The Product attribute data to quickly obtain and LCC for a new and then an application is provided. In additions, the statistical method, called regression analysis, is suggested to predict the LCC. Tests have shown it is possible to predict the life cycle cost, and the comparison results between a learning LCC model and a regression analysis is also shown

  • The Arabian Gulf region has one of the highest ocean temperatures, reaching above 35 degrees and ambient temperatures over 50 degrees in the summer. Two nuclear power plants (NPP) are being introduced in the region for the first time, one at Bushehr (1,000 MWe PWR plant from Russia), and a much larger one at Barakah (4X1,400 MWe PWR from Korea). Both plants take seawater from the Gulf for condenser cooling, having to modify the secondary/tertiary side cooling systems design by increasing the heat transfer surface area from the country of origin. This paper analyses the secondary side of a typical PWR plant operating under the Rankine cycle with a simplified thermal-hydraulic model. Parametric study of ocean cooling temperatures is conducted to estimate thermal efficiency variations and its associated design changes for the secondary side. Operational safety is reviewed to deliver rated power output with acceptable safety margins in line with technical specifications, mainly in the auxiliary systems together with the cooling water temperature. Impact on the Gulf seawater as the ultimate heat sink is considered negligible, affecting only the adjacent water near the NPP site, when compared to the solar radiation on the sea surface.

  • This paper presents a novel approach to the design of an adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller for depth control of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). So far, AUV's dynamics are highly nonlinear and the hydrodynamic coefficients of the vehicles are difficult to estimate, because of the variations of these coefficients with different operating conditions. These kinds of difficulties cause modeling inaccuracies of AUV's dynamics. Hence, we propose an adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control with novel fuzzy adaptation technique for regulating vertical positioning in presence of parametric uncertainty and disturbances. In this approach, two fuzzy approximator are employed in such a way that slope of the linear sliding surface is updated by first fuzzy approximator, to shape tracking error dynamics in the sliding regime, while second fuzzy approximator change the supports of the output fuzzy membership function in the defuzzification inference module of fuzzy sliding mode control (FSMC) algorithm. Simulation results shows that, the reaching time and tracking error in the approaching phase can be significantly reduced with chattering problem can also be eliminated. The effectiveness of proposed control strategy and its advantages are indicated in comparison with conventional sliding mode control FSMC technique.
