  • Magnitude-frequency relationships are used in the design of dams, highway bridges, culverts, water supply systems, and flood control structures. In this paper, possible techniques for analyzing flood frequency at a site are presented. A currently used approach to flood frequency analysis is based on the concept of parametric statistical inference. In this analysis, the assumption is make that the distribution function describing flood data in known. However, such an assumption is not always justified. Even though many people have shown that the nonparametric method provides a better fit to the data than the parometric method and gives more reliable flood estimates. the noparpmetric method implies a small probability in extrapolation beyond the highest observed data in the sample. Therefore, a remedy is presented in this paper by introducing an estimator which mixes parametric and nonparametric density estimate.

  • As the basic research for the application of a parametric acoustic source to fish finding, the characteristics of beam patterns and parametric gains of the acoustic source were investigated and target strengths of fish, grey mullet, with the acoustic source were measured. The mean primary frequency of the acoustic source was 200KHz and the produced sounds by difference-frequencies were 5KHz, 10KHz, 16KHz and 20KHz. For measurement of target strength in yaw (coronal) plane of fish the to be target was 34cm in length, the pulse duration of the source was 0.3m/sec and the difference frequency was 10KHz in consideration of the length of fish and of parametric gain of the acoustic source. The results obtained are as follow: 1. Beam widths(down 3 dB) of the parametric acoustic source excited at frequencies of 5KHz, 10KHz, 16KHz, and 20KHz were 4.3$^{\circ}$, 2.2$^{\circ}$, 3.0$^{\circ}$ and 2.5$^{\circ}$ respectively. 2. Parametric gains of the parametric acoustic source excited at frequencies of 5KHz, 10KHz, 16KHz and 20KHz were -41 dB, -45 dB, -60 dB and -68 dB respectively. 3. Target strengths of a fish in head and tail aspect using the parametric acoustic source were 5 dB lower than those using 200KHz single frequency sound, but those in side aspect were similar. 4. Target strengths of two or three fish with the parametric acoustic source were 1-3 dB lower than those in head and tail aspect using 200KHz single frequency sound.

  • The present study considers multi-level approach for the analysis of parametric roll phenomena. Three kinds of computation method, GM variation, impulse response function (IRF), and Rankine panel method, are applied for the multi-level approach. IRF and Rankine panel method are based on the weakly nonlinear formulation which includes nonlinear Froude-Krylov and restoring forces. In the computation result of parametric roll occurrence test in regular waves, IRF and Rankine panel method show similar tendency. Although the GM variation approach predicts the occurrence of parametric roll at twice roll natural frequency, its frequency criteria shows a little difference. Nonlinear roll motion in bichromatic wave is also considered in this study. To prove the unstable roll motion in bichromatic waves, theoretical and numerical approaches are applied. The occurrence of parametric roll is theoretically examined by introducing the quasi-periodic Mathieu equation. Instability criteria are well predicted from stability analysis in theoretical approach. From the Fourier analysis, it has been verified that difference-frequency effects create the unstable roll motion. The occurrence of unstable roll motion in bichromatic wave is also observed in the experiment.

  • A passive power converter operating on the principle of parametric excitation, called Parametric transformer, is analyzed. The energy transfer from the input to the output is achieved through the double frequency variation of magnetic path reluctance to the input frequency without mutual flux coupling between two windings. Thus, output becomes available which is essentially independant of waveform of excitation. The mathmatical model of the device is developed and its solution is obtained. The outstanding characteristics of the device is explained from the analysis.

  • This paper demonstrates the digital communication in air using the parametric array. The stepped-plate transducer which is suitable for high-power and high-efficient radiation is used to generate the difference frequency wave with the parametric array. The primary frequencies are selected to 83 kHz and 122 kHz and the resulting difference frequency wave at the frequency of 39 kHz is used for the communication. The modulation method is selected to On-Off Keying method. The waveform and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is measured and analyzed to see the characteristics of the digital communication using the parametric array. The proper distance for the communication using parametric array is about 3 m. The measured beam width of the 3dB SNR reduction was $14^{\circ}$. The possibility of the communication in air using the parametric array is confirmed and the high directional characteristic of the communication using the parametric array is expected to have the advantages for the multi path and the security problems.

  • The design problem of partial pole assignment (PPA) in two classes of frequency-domain MIMO models by constant gain feedback is investigated in this paper. Its aim is to design a constant gain feedback which changes only a subset of the open-loop eigenvalues, while the rest of them are kept unchanged in the closed-loop system. A near general parametric expression for the feedback gain matrix in term of a set of design parameter vectors and the set of the closed-loop poles, and a simple parametric approach for solving the proposed problem are presented. The set of poles do not need to be previously prescribed, and can be set undetermined and treated together with the set of parametric vectors as degrees of design freedom provided by the approach. An illustrative example shows that the proposed parametric method is simple and effective.

  • This study investigates the whirling stability of a rotating shaft-disk system under parametric excitation using periodically varying torque. The equations of motion were derived using a lumped-mass model, and the Floquet method was employed to find the effects of torque fluctuation, internal and external damping, and rotational speed on whirling stability. Results indicated that the effect of torque fluctuation was considerable on the instability around resonance, but minimal on supercritical instability. Stability diagrams were sensitive to the parametric excitation frequency; critical torque decreased upon increasing excitation frequency, with faster response convergence or divergence. In addition, internal and external damping had a considerable effect on unstable regions, and reduced the effects of the parametric excitation frequency on critical torque and speed. Results obtained from the Floquet approach were in good agreement with those obtained by numerical integration, except for some cases with Floquet multipliers very close to unity.

  • Frequency tuning characteristics of a THz-wave by varying phase-matching angle and pump wavelength in a noncollinear phase-matching THz-wave parametric oscillator (TPO) are analyzed. A novel scheme to realize the tuning of a THz-wave by moving the cavity mirror forwards and backwards is proposed in a noncollinear phase-matching TPO. The parametric gain coefficients of the THz-wave in a $LiNbO_3$ crystal are explored under different working temperatures. The relationship between the poling period of periodically poled $LiNbO_3$ (PPLN) and the THz-wave frequency under the condition of a quasi-phase-matching configuration is deduced. Such analyses have an impact on the experiments of the TPO.

  • A parametric array is a nonlinear phenomenon that generates a narrow beam of low-frequency sound using the nonlinearity of the medium. The low-frequency sound so generated has a low sound pressure compared with that of sound generated directly. Consequently, a transducer that can generate a primary wave with high directivity and level is required. This study designed, fabricated, and evaluated a multi-resonance transducer as a parametric array source. The designs of the unit transducers and array transducer were based on an analysis model. The design process was repeated to fabricate the optimum transducer. The fabricated transducer array can generate a 189 dB, 190 dB primary wave level at 6.3 m and a 134 dB difference frequency wave using the parametric array phenomenon. The difference frequency wave has a frequency of 15 kHz and high directivity with an $8^{\circ}$ half power beam width in a $12{\times}18{\times}10m$ water tank.

  • The effects of high frequency noises on a perturbational inversion technique for a stratified dispersive medium are investigated in this paper. It is shown that the perturbational solution becomes unstable under high frequency noises. The physical origin of this instability is described. In order to enhance the robustness of the perturbational inverse scattering solution, a parametric inversion technique is introduced. The examples for the 2-pole and the 3-pole reflection coefficients are compared and contrasted, and improvement of the robustness of the solutions is shown.
