The purpose of this study was to detect SNPs that were responsible for a carcass trait in Hanwoo populations. A non-parametric model applying a restricted partition method (RPM) was used, which exploited a partitioning algorithm considering statistical criteria for multiple comparison testing. Phenotypic and genotypic data were obtained from the Hanwoo Improvement Center, National Agricultural Cooperation Federation, Korea, in which the pedigree structure comprised 229 steers from 16 paternal half-sib proven sires that were born in Namwon or Daegwanryong livestock testing station between spring of 2002 and fall of 2003. A carcass trait, longissimus dorsi muscle area for each steer was measured after slaughter at approximately 722 days. Three SNPs (19_1, 18_4 and 28_2) near the microsatellite marker ILSTS035 on BTA6, around which the quantitative trait loci (QTL) for meat quality were previously detected, were used in this study. The RPM analyses resulted in two significant interaction effects between SNPs (19_1 and 18_4) and (19_1 and 28_2) at ${\alpha}$ = 0.05 level. However, under a general linear (parametric) model no interaction effect between any pair of the three SNPs was detected, while only one main effect for SNP19_1 was found for the trait. Also, under another non-parametric model using a multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) method, only one interaction effect of the two SNPs (19_1 and 28_2) explained the trait significantly better than the parametric model with the main effect of SNP19_1. Our results suggest that RPM is a good alternative to model choices that can find associations of the interaction effects of multiple SNPs for quantitative traits in livestock species.

Currently, the design of reinforced concrete deep beams with web openings is carried out using empirical or semi-empirical methods and hence their scope of application is limited. In particular, high strength concrete deep beams with various web opening configurations have been given little treatment. In view of this, a nonlinear layered finite element method (LFEM) for cracking and failure analysis of reinforced concrete structures is used to conduct a parametric study to investigate reinforced concrete deep beams various web opening behaviours. This paper initially presents comparisons of LFEM output with published test results to numerical techniques. The paper then focuses on a parametric study on the shear strengths of deep beams with varying web opening configurations such as opening sizes and locations. The results confirm that the current design methods are inadequate in predicting the maximum shear strength when web openings are present. A series of parametric study offers insight into the maximum shear strength of the deep beams being critically influenced by the size and location of web openings.
This paper focuses on a recently proposed asymmetric base-isolation coupling control system (ABiCS) for the vibration control of adjacent twin buildings. The ABiCS consists of inter-story diagonal dampers, a connecting damper between the two buildings, and a seismic isolation device at the base floor of one building. To investigate the control characteristics of ABiCS, a parametric study was performed by numerically simulating the 20-story twin buildings. In the parametric study, the control capacities of the inter-story diagonal dampers, connecting damper, and seismic isolation device were considered as varying parameters. The parametric study results indicate that the connecting damper between the two buildings reduces the responses of both buildings only at optimal or near-optimal capacity. In addition, adjusting the stiffness of the base isolation is found to be the most effective method for improving seismic performance and achieving cost-effectiveness. Accordingly, we presented a scenario-based performance improvement approach in which reducing the stiffness of the base isolation device could be an effective technique to improve the seismic performance of both buildings. However, note that checking the maximum allowable displacement of the base isolation device is essential.
In the companion paper, a simple but effective analysis procedure termed an Improved Modal Pushover Analysis (IMPA) is proposed to estimate the seismic capacities of multi-span continuous bridge structures on the basis of the modal pushover analysis, which considers all the dynamic modes of a structure. In contrast to previous studies, the IMPA maintains the simplicity of the capacity-demand curve method and gives a better estimation of the maximum dynamic response in a bridge structure. Nevertheless, to verify its applicability, additional parametric studies for multi-span continuous bridges with large differences in the length of adjacent piers are required. This paper, accordingly, concentrates on a parametric study to review the efficiency and limitation in the application of IMPA to bridge structures through a correlation study between various analytical models including the equivalent single-degree-of-freedom method (ESDOF) and modal pushover analysis (MPA) that are usually used in the seismic design of bridge structures. Based on the obtained numerical results, this paper offers practical guidance and/or limitations when using IMPA to predict the seismic response of a bridge effectively.
Virtual ground modeling is one of key topic for real-time vehicle dynamic simulation. This paper discusses about the virtual 3D road modeling process using parametric surface concept. General road data is a type of lumped position vector so interpolation process is required to compute contact of internal surface. The parametric surface has continuity and linearity within boundaries and functions are very simple to find out contact point. In this paper, the parametric surface formula is adopted to road modeling to calculate road hight. Position indexing method is proposed to reduce memory size and resource possession, and a simple mathematical method for contact patch searching is also proposed. The developed road process program is tested in dynamic driving simulation on off-road. Conclusively, the new virtual road program shows high performance of road hight computation in vast field of off-road simulation.
In this study, the hydraulic breaker system was analyzed and simulated using. The simulation result was certified comparing with the experimental result. From the parametric analysis, the effects of each factor were revealed. Through the simulation with varying parameters, the method to reduce the return line pressure fluctuation was presented.

Free Standing Hybrid Riser (FSHR) is comprised of vertical steel risers and Flexible Jumpers (FJ). They are jointly connected to a submerged Buoyancy Can (BC). There are several factors that have influence on the behavior of FSHR such as the span distance between an offshore platform and a foundation, BC up-lift force, BC submerged location and FJ length. An optimization method through a parametric study is presented. Firstly, descriptions for the overall arrangement and characteristics of FSHR are introduced. Secondly, a flowchart for optimization of FSHR is suggested. Following that, it is described how to select reasonable ranges for a parametric study and determine each of optimal configuration options. Lastly, numerical analysis based on this procedure is performed through a case study. In conclusion, the relation among those parameters is analyzed and non-dimensional parametric ranges on optimal arrangements are suggested. Additionally, strength analysis is performed with variation in the configuration.
Advances in the technology of computational design are giving architects and engineers the opportunity to analyze buildings with complex geometries. This study explores the optimization and automation process using the parametric design method, and uses digital tools to achieve surface representation and panelization for curved shaped office buildings. In this paper, we propose parametric algorithms of dimensional and geometric constraints using the Knowledge-ware scripts embedded in Gehry Technologies' Digital Project. The knowledge-based design methods proposed in this study can be used to systemize the knowledge possessed by experts in the form of data. Such knowledge is required to promote collaboration between designers and engineers in the process of CAD/CAE/CAM. The aim of this study is to integrate the process into design, which establishes an integrated process. This integration enables two-way feedback between design and construction data by combining the methods used in designing, engineering, and construction.
A new approach for the automatic elimination of free edges in the finite element model for the analysis of sheet metal forming processes is presented. In general, the raw finite element model constructed from an automatic mesh generator is not well suited for the direct use in the downstream forming analysis due to the many free edges which requires tedious time consuming interactive graphic operations of the users. In the present study, a general method for the automatic elimination of free edges is proposed by introducing a CAD/CAE hybrid method. In the method a trimmed parametric surface is generated to fill the holes which are orginated from the free edges by using the one step elastic finite element analysis. In addition, mesh generation algorithm is suggested which can be used in the general trimmed surface. In order to verify the validity of the proposed method, various examples including actual automobile sheet metal parts are given and discussed.
This paper addresses vibration comfort evaluation on suspension bridge subjected to moving vehicles. The moving load method is commonly employed for the analysis, even though it is less accurate than the moving mass approach which considers vehicle-bridge interaction effects and roughness of the pavement. In this study, a parametric study on modeling method by means of the moving load technique, such as the number of modes included in the analysis, types of moving loads, and length of the stiffening girder, is carried out. The numerical result indicated that use of the triangular pulse load may result in significant overestimation on vibration discomfortness.
